Re: Desperate for good VET in CT
If you are able to go to MA, there is also a good internist at VESCONE in Waltham (veterinary emergecy and specialty center of new england). Her name is Dr. Spielman, I think. I liked her a lot. And her staff is great. but the after-hours emergency/hospitalization staff sucks. They are next door to NAEVOG, which is an oncology group and is very good. Michelle

Re: Update: :( (not looking good) Sorry So Long! (Belinda)
Terrie, There is no test for FIP. Only for corona viruses, of which there are many and most cats test positive for them. FIP is a mutation of a corona virus. It in itself is not contagious. Some of the corona viruses are treatable with antibiotica, like toxoplasmosis is a corona virus, I think. If this is FIP, you absolutely should not assume your others have or will get it. That is not how it works. Michelle
RE: Update: :( (not looking good) Sorry So Long! (Belinda)
Hi Terrie, So sorry to hear that Dukee and Vinnie are struggling. FIP is scary, but it is so hard to diagnose that even if his FCoV titre comes back high, you can't know for sure that it has mutated into FIP. A blood panel which includes an albumin/globulin ratio can help to diagnose, but a necropsy when his time comes is the only sure way to know. And even if that came back positive, your remaining unrelated kitties only have a 5-10% chance of having the virus mutate into FIP. We lost one in August to suspected wet FIP (unfortunately no necropsy was performed), but none of her siblings have developed it, knock on wood. I am not sure what your vet means by "treat them all as if they have FIP". With 10 kitties, it is likely that the corona virus has been present in your house for a long time, just as it is in most shelters and breeding facilities. You can try to minimize stress on them, have good cleaning practices, and feed them the best diet you can afford to try to minimize the chance of it mutating, but not much else that I know of. Those are all things that are good for any cat anyway... (The only thing that I would do special is to avoid bringing any new cats in at this time, especially any young kittens.) It is pretty much a matter of odds, and please know that they are very much in your favor. Prayers for you, Dukee and Vinnie, Beth
Re: Update: :( (not looking good) Sorry So Long! (Belinda)
Terrie, Please contact Hideyo about the treatment with Feline Interferon that she has been doing with Dharma. As you know, it's very hard to truly diagnose FIP, (omg, I'm so sorry to hear of the possibility in your household), but she suspected Dharma had it and quickly put her on a protocol suggested to her. Dharma is doing much better and continues to improve according to the last update from Hideyo. Write to me off list if you don't have Hideyo's phone number. She doesn't always get emails over the weekend. Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Belinda, Can you put Dukee and Vinnie on the special list for prayers. As you guys know I have more cats in my home. Even though he has tested negative in the past it doesn't mean he can't get the Felv/Fiv virus as he indicated. He said when they get ill they can show the symptoms of this and it can also be in their bone marrow. So he sent home some Amoxi drops to give him for the fever. However he is eating some and drinking some water. I gave him some snacks in which he ate some. My Vet is hopeful that it may not be the horrible Felv/Fiv but he says you never know. He also said FIP is on the rise that he has seen a lot of it recently by prior patients that have died. Their owners had the necropsy done. Secondly Vinnie is has been throwing up and has diarrhea his stomach is like it is full and hard. He is aware of his surroundings and very loving. Still eating and drinking. I'm not able to get him into the Vet until Saturday morning. If I have to I will take him to ER in dire need. He is 6 yrs old and my husband's baby. My husband doesn't know any of the news yet pertaining to the cats. He will be devastated on Vinnie if there is anything wrong. He knows Vinnie has thrown up some. As much as I hate to say but I always hope that my husband goes first before his Vinnie. This man is extremely close to this cat. I don't want either one of them to go but I'm speaking of reality. Afraid husband will clam up if you know what I mean. "Vinnie is also in the photo contest. If you like I can send a photo of him and Dukee if you like to see them. Send me an email I would love to send their photos to you!" Since, I'm the caregiver/companion of the cats I pay attention of what goes on around them whether it's eating, drinking, playing, or sleeping, using the litter-boxes, and plus all their bad or good habits. I don't think I can handle more bad news at this time. With the recent loss of my Sam and my daughter's kitty Gutt. With my move home being damaged on the new property and my husband being sick on top of it. My husband has Liver Failure and Hep Che recently had shoulder surgery back in July had complications from that as well. He is doing better will return back to work on the first of Nov. That is great news for me. We will have stable income coming in. My rescue has been put on hold as hard it has been hard on me not being able to help all the Siamese needing homes. Sorry so long but needed to vent/shed a few tears a bit in hopes to make myself feel better so when my husband comes home from helping his friends working on a truck...I can talk to him without losing it. Ah Kris, What a wonderful story. Your sweet little Luna has left a very valuable legacy. The way the two of you stirred the children, (not to mention their parents) will have lasting effects on the way they regard animals and their worth. Not to mention brightening your home and heart with Gabriel's welcome addition. What a blessed kitty to not have been chosen by anyone else. He was waiting for you! Re: VERY impt note about chipping Re: HAPPYHAPPYJOYJOY!!!!
Sorry for not writing sooner, but i never check my e-mail anymore... For anyone living in PA Home Again microchip scanners are availble more than AVID. The price is basically the same. At our hospital we have a rep for both companies and i rather have home again. the people are more friendly, and i'm not sure with avid but you can have your animal's medical history come up when they call the recovery center with home again which is great with special needs animals. In the next year vets should be able to download medical records themselves so they will show up on the database as well. i hope this info might help soemone. Avid has a registration program for eight pets for the total cost of $40.00. This is even worth using if you only have three animals because you save $5.00. There is a $4.00 surcharge for every time you update your personal information. If I am not mistaken Avid is the number one micro-chip company in the United States being used by animal shelters and rescue groups. Home Again is the second leading micro-chip company being used. I know in Chicago, Illinois that the city's animal control and Anti-cruelty Society (the biggest non-government agency) use Avid micro-chips on their animals. The group I volunteer for Precious Pets, Almost Home uses the Avid micro-chips in their rescue pets. You may want to check the shelters and rescue groups in your area to see what brand of micro-chips they are using. You see Avid micro-chip scanners do not read the Home Again micro-chips and vice a verse. There is a universal micro-chip scanner that can pick up all different types of micro-chips. The problem is that most shelters and rescue groups do not have one! The universal micro-chip scanner is very expensive! Since I started doing rescue, I encourage anybody that ask me about it to have their pet micro-chip! Food for thought! Precious Pets P. S. I am behind in reading the groups' posts. My husband's name is Gabriel too, and this morning I told him I am so grateful to God he blessed me with such a wonderful husband. After that I read your story about your Gabriel. Anyway, it turns out that one student had a kitten left from a litter that they couldn't find a home for. The kids decided that would be my new cat. The child along with her parents brought the kitten to my house Tuesday evening. How sweet is that? It's so nice to know that so many people care. I named him Gabriel after God's messenger angel. I felt the name was appropriate. I students were all angels and the kitty is a wonderful gift. Kris
OT - [Fwd: New Chance to Stop Aerial Wolf Gunning in Alaska]
Gale Norton is gone, and with the arrival of a new Secretary of the Interior, there is renewed hope for Alaska's wolves. But with the state possibly only weeks away from a new aerial gunning season, we need your help to prevent the killing of hundreds of wolves. Send a letter to Kempthorne today – urge him to stop the wolf massacre! Under Alaska's barbaric aerial gunning policy, marksmen can shoot wolves from the air or use airplanes to chase them in deep snow to the point of exhaustion then land and execute them at point blank range. Last year, a state judge has ruled that Alaska's regulations, upon which their aerial gunning program is based, were illegal - creating a temporary reprieve for Alaska’s targeted wolves. But the Alaska Board of Game sidestepped the ruling by approving new regulations, issuing aerial gunning permits and allowing the deaths of more than 150 wolves last winter alone. This brutal program could end tomorrow, if only Secretary of the Interior Kempthorne would enforce the Federal Airborne Hunting Act (FAHA) in Alaska. Sign our petition to Secretary Kempthorne today! The FAHA was enacted in 1971, principally to curtail the airborne killing of wolves in Alaska... So why does aerial gunning continue in 2006? Defenders of Wildlife has demonstrated, in earlier petitions to the federal government, that Alaska's aerial wolf control programs are a gross mismanagement of wildlife resources and out-of-synch with the law. But so far, the federal government has refused to act. And now that the Alaska Board of Game has voted against popular opinion to reinstate aerial gunning, marksmen can once again take to the air to pursue and slaughter hundreds of wolves. That's why we need your voice today - please sign our petition to Secretary Kempthorne now, and then please forward this message to your friends and family who love wildlife as much as you do. We need everyone's signature to succeed! Sign here: http://go.care2.com/e/IShF/tcW/KyFd Thank you for acting today to save Alaska's wolves,
Re: Prince says hi :)
Somehow I haven't gotten your original mail yet -- (things come out of order sometimes) - but I wanted to say hello too! I'm so glad Prince has a happy home and that you found us. This list has the nicest people and I have just come to love everybody here. welcome to the list, elizabeth, phelix, antonio, tiffany, lexie, shakiti, tori, othello, and mama kitty In a message dated 10/21/2006 12:56:19 A.M. As to Prince, my boyfriend took him in. I drove with him to his place on Saturday (about 130 miles away). Prince got used to the new environment very easily, and he's relaxed and happy there. Actually he already tore open two mouse toys after he arrived. There are no other cats in my boyfriend's apartment, so the FeLV shouldn't be a problem at least for now. I'll post new pictures soon. I'm reading the whole maillist now. Just trying to figure out who is who and what's your pet's name and so on... :-DGina WN <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi and Welcome! Prince is a doll, he's so cute! I love the videos, especially the one of him going after the milk. Gina and Tigger, Taylor, Bob and Pippin I'm so happy that I found this website. I took in a stray cat 2 months ago and he was diagnosed with FeLV (both ELISA and IFA positive). I have 3 other cats in the apartment, and I need to get them all tested to see if they are infected. :( (This is really my fault. I only know that I need to de-flea and de-worm a new cat, but I didn't know about FeLV and the fact that it's transmitted by saliva.) It's been a week since I heard the bad news about the stray cat. At first it really freaked me out and I cried for 2 whole days, but now I'm feeling much better. I decided not to worry too much about the other 3 cats before their test result is out. I already isolated them, BTW. Anyway, here is something about the stray cat. It's a boy, about 1.5 years old. I named him Prince. Prince weighs 11 pounds now, compared to 8.5 pounds 2 months ago. He's very pretty, extremely sweet and purrs all the time. He also has an amazing appetite. I had him neutered on Tuesday. Kris , It says a lot about you as a teacher and a person that your students care enough to do this for you. God bless them and you. Sheila
Some good news since Luna
Hello Everyone, It's been almost a week without Luna. I still hurt, but have had something wonderful come out of this. I teach, and when I found out last Friday my little Luna's prognosis, I had a classroom full of students; my third period. They saw my reaction (I'm terrible at hiding how I feel). They had a ton of questions which I answered. Anyway, the weekend passed and on Monday, they wanted to know how Luna was. I told them. They were so sympathetic and all wanted to hug me (they're 6th graders) that it made me cry. The following day, Tuesday, I had a bunch of homemade sympathy cards. Also, one student brought me a dozen roses and a homemade card which he and his mom signed. To let you know how much more wonderful they are, apparently, behind my back, they were plotting to get me another kitty. The guidance counselor wanted to know if I was going to do something with cats in my class because many kids were asking her about them. Anyway, it turns out that one student had a kitten left from a litter that they couldn't find a home for. The kids decided that would be my new cat. Re: Good Lessons Screensaver
Really cute! Thank you :) Gina Evan & Dee <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Good morning all,I created a screensaver from one of my favorite powerpoints - "Good Lessons" (life lessons and cute animals - can't go wrong) and uploaded it for anyone who is interested. It is self installing and also has an uninstaller. It's 5.7MB so could be painful for dial-up connections (I feel your pain - took me awhile to upload it!) For those who have asked for screensavers - this is not the same program I'm using but will be how I likely distribute them so as not to clog the mailservers.
