[Felvtalk] kitten with FeLV

2009-07-03 Thread Sandra Brunner
Hi there,
I'm new to this... looking for some advice. I took in a stray, she's
about 7 months old. She tested positive for FeLV. I didn't know she
had FeLV. I took her in as she was hanging out on the patio of a
restaurant, near a busy street. The owners of the restaurant were
going to take her to the humane society.
I already have a cat, who is not FeLV positive. The stray is with me
while I try to re-home her, and my cat is with a friend.
In an ideal world, I would like to keep the stray (Penny) and have her
and my cat.
Is this possible? Should I have Penny re-tested with a DNA test to
make sure she does have FeLV?
My cat (Stella) is an indoor cat, 7 years old. and has had all of her
shots every year except for the last year.
Is there any way they can live together with Penny being FeLV positive?
any insight or links to relevant websites/postings would be greatly appreciated!
thank you.

Re: [Felvtalk] Cat losing weight/question about Doxy

2009-07-03 Thread Amy

No diarrhea or vomiting that I've seen. He just seems hungry all the time and
follows me around crying at me. We did some tests yesterday and are waiting
for results.

Is there any diarrhea or vomiting?
Frankie was ravenous - even raiding the
other kitties' bowls and was diagnosed with pancreatitis.
 The vet had not
seen the ravenous eating with pancreatitis before.  He
 did lose some weight
later after he became anorexic. He had occasional fudgy
 stools.

I have an appointment for Wolfie to get bloodwork
 tomorrow.  He's been
losing weight steadily for almost 4 years now.  We've done
 numerous stool
samples, bloodwork (CBC and chem) every 6 months, and 2
 thyroid tests.  He's
been on kitten food (high fat) to try to stop the weight
 loss but it's not
helping.  He eats well and always seems hungry.

I've been discussing how to proceed with my vet and her
 suggestions of
possibilities were an IDEXX hemobart test, a pancreatitis
 test (spec-flp), a
feline digestive panel (which would include the flp test),
 and a more
extensive thyroid panel.  Abdominal ultrasound and bone
 marrow biopsy came
up as well as B-comp and B-12 injections.  The lab
 suggested we start with
the hemobart and thyroid panel tomorrow to see what we
 find.  If we don't
find anything there, we will do the extensive digestive
 panel in a couple
weeks.  Does that sound like a reasonable plan?

We have been discussing whether to just treat for hemobart
 and while she is
open to treating him without a test confirming he has it,
 we have some
concerns.  Most of the research she sent me expressed
 concerns about
developing antibiotic resistance especially among cats with
 retroviruses.
The other concern is what form of doxycycline to use if we
 do treat.  What
do most people use for their cats?  She sent me some
 options and it seems
esophageal stricture is a concern if using tablets for
 cats.  She said I can
get it compounded but wondered what form people on this
 board are using.
Can anybody let me know what form of doxy they use to treat
 hemobart?

 Thanks
 Amy

2009-07-03 Thread Elizabeth Paz

Dear Sandra,

My Kitty (his name) has FELV, we got him when he was 7 months from students. He
was diagnosed with Felv when he was not quite two, he is now 8 1/2 and the felv
has been kept at bay with the Prednisone. I also worried about my other cat
Simba being exposed to him, because they would played and sleep together and
this was long before we knew Kitty had the Felv. It has been 6 1/2 years now
and Simba has been tested and no sign of Felv. Both have always been indoor
cats.

2009-07-03 Thread Chris
Sandra
Welcome to this board==you'll get a whole lot of info here from folks with a
whole lot of experience!

About testing--there are 2 common tests: The snap Elissa test done right in
the vet's office and the IFA where blood is sent to lab. If you only had
the Elissa, try to get the IFA as confirmation. It can't hurt.

As for mixing, I'm one of those who does mix. I did not find out my Tucson
was pos until years after she lived with my other cats (she had tested neg
as a young kitten). The other cats never caught felv virus. I had them
tested and vaccinated after I found out Tucson was pos. They eat together,
sleep together, groom each other, share litter boxes, etc. and have done so
since they were kittens.

Tucson's only problems have been a few episodes of having a very low white
blood count--my vet used a series of immune regulin shots to bring it back
up. Sadly, my other pos cat, Romeo, died of lymphoma earlier this year. He
was at least 7.

You can get Stella tested and vaccinated. I say tested because of my own
experience where I had Tucson for a number of years before I even knew she
was pos!

Basically, I'm one of those who doesn't think twice about mixing but that's
a personal decision. Others on the board can give you more of their
experiences and expertise. I know that kittens are at the highest risk of
contracting all those diseases that FELV + cats can be prone to (URI,
anemia, etc). You have to basically focus on giving her the best shot to
strengthen her overall health and immune system. Good food, a warm place,
etc. There are supplements folks use as well but Tucson is such a
temperamental (aka spoiled) cat that I don't push that too much for her.

And hurrah to you for taking Penny in

Chris

Today I brought a new 15 year old cat home from the shelter. He is
a very sweet flame point FIV positive. I know next to nothing about
FIV except that it is not supposed to be as easy to transmit as feline
leukemia. Does anyone have any information or links for FIV? He seems
very healty except for goopy eyes. He is going to get Wellness food
with lysine mixed into it.

Thanks for any advise!
