[Felvtalk] Hair Loss
Hi all. My 1 year old FeLV+ male cat has started to have some hair loss on his head and neck. I noticed a bit of a bald spot on his neck a few days ago with a small scratch (he plays rough with his brother). I didn't think anything of it as I thought maybe he just scratched the hair off. Then I noticed that the top of his head had some balding spot. This evening I noticed an entire clump of hair missing on top of his head. I haven't seen him scratch or act any differently. He still lets me pet him. I haven't changed his diet or environment. He seems to be eating normally and drinking too. I'm at a loss. I plan to call my vet and take him in if this doesn't improve in the next couple days. Any ideas on what this could be? ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
Re: [Felvtalk] Bernie Update
I am sorry to hear this. My Squeaky (feLV+, 22 years old) lived 3 weeks after cancer diagnosis. I made the tough decision when he quit eating and started hiding. Sounds like Bernie still has quality. Glad to hear that. Ps cats also purr to comfort themselves...I don't necessarily look to that but DO consider if they are still eating, breathing, walking and not hiding. Don't know his potassium, the vet just did a white blood cell count. Do you think he might need more potassium? Re: [Felvtalk] Bernie Update
Maria, I am so sorry to hear that about Bernie. I know this is hard for you, but remember you provided him with so much love and comfort his whole short life. I have just joined this support group, as I have been diligently searching for a home for KC, an abandoned 8 month old FELV cat. She was found abandoned at my work site. My co-worker and I managed to get her trust and got her in the kennel. Off to the vet we believed for just spaying, and then to a lined up foster home. KC was fixed, then tested for FELV. She is positive and they did more test and it is in the bone marrow. She is such a sweet kitty, she was also pregnant when we had her fixed and has weathered some cold, freezing, rainy, conditions, with just the woods for cover. Sadly my co-worker and myself cannot take her as we have numerous cats, and she is a foster for Siamese Rescue, with 9 cats there. So by looking and searching I came across more places, and flyers throughout the internet were sent in pleas for a home for her. What I've found out is that there are so many FELV cats, more so than I ever imagined. Hence its hard to find a home for her. However, we keep on trying, while KC waits in the kennel at the vets. So I just want you to thank you. You've done a wonderful, act of love, by taking care of Bernie. Which I know he returned you with all the love he had back to you. My prayers are with you and Bernie. Re: [Felvtalk] Stanley and Muscular Atrophy
YES. We did a muscle biopsy and found myonecrosis - there are several causes - toxins, histoplasmosis and vitamin deficiency. We could not think of a toxin exposure. Coco was tested for histoplasmosis. Since the results were negative, the vets told me this was likely a Vitamin D, Selenium deficiency. I had been feeding Coco dry Wellness. I had always poured it into a Tupperware. The vet told me oxygen or water can deplete food of Vit D and Selenium. I started feeding canned Wellness and she recovered. Another cat taken in at the same time with the same issue did not recover as hers had progressed too far. Coco could not walk right or jump up any more (rear leg weakness) and she was having trouble eating because her tongue didn't work right. This was 6 years ago! She still has some rear leg weakness and is afraid to jump up on things she used to but she can walk and eat. I rescued Stanley (and two of his dumped buddies) about a year and a half ago and, unfortunately, he was diagnosed with FeLV. All the cats were estimated to be about a year old at that time. Late last summer Stanley went through six weeks of LTCI treatment. He has also always been in excellent, robust health since I found him and fattened him up. This past weekend we noticed that he wasn't his usual self and he couldn't jump up on anyone's lap without a lot of trouble so he went to the vet's this morning. The vet said he has muscular atrophy in his hind legs. We did an X-ray which showed no signs of tumors and his white blood cell count was normal. I also noticed his eyes don't look right. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen these symptoms and how they dealt with them? I want to make him as comfortable as I can because he probably won't be regenerating any muscles. We're also thinking of continuing with more LTCI injections. Thanks for any help anyone has. Maria, I've been following the conversations regarding your sweet Bernie, but have not had anything to contribute as I'm very new to FeLV care and am learning from every post.
