I'd like to hear specifics about any issues with Best Friends. Everyone I know who has ever visited them in person has absolutely loved the place. And I know they do a huge amount of good and take on large projects that most other rescues could not manage. (Like the 800 cat pahrump/FLOCK situation in Nevada. To Dorlis- Hi from C & W Rustic Hollow Shelter in Nashua, Iowa. We are the sanctuary you contacted. We have over 375 cats in five separate homelike atmosphere..cage free...TV's with Catsitter videos and outdoor environments to watch the 'real bird TV' in a screened in 'catio' for three seasons of the year. There are nine staff to care for the felines daily. and 25 volunteers. We have two new buildings and the newest one is 36'x63' and will have an infirmary for our medical technician and our vet to use when he is on site, a storage bay and of course, cats in the larger areas. And an upper level apartment area for overnight guests and volunteers... we are excited about it. The trust issue is a big thing with 2 of mine. Annie went through a lot when yher owner died. i think the worst of it was not knowing what happened to her owner. she had been an only cat for 4 years, sleeping on the lady's bed, super spoiled. then she was locked up for 3 weeks with someon coming to feed and change her box. then put in a box and brought to the vet's office and then came to my house where she encontered another cat and 2 new people. she spent the first 2 weeks in the basement, sneaking pu at night to eat and drink. Nitnoy showed up with a bloody 4" stump of a tail. took her to the vet for repairs and shots and spaying and then brought her home to 7 other cats. I later found her tail in the yard and discovered it was a raccoon who did it when one showed up on the deck and looked in the window. she went balistic and nearly killed me trying to get away from him. she is still sensitive about her tail and after almost a year allows me to hold her. That is why I think a place like Rustic Hollow would be good for my girls and boy, they have a "home" environment to live in. I am also going to send a letter for each one telling about all their personalities, etc. I am doing the letters now just in case. I am 70 after all. I have also arranged with someone to drive them to Rustic Hollow. Glad I am not the only one with that problem. Homie marked a rocking chair and an oriental carpet. have to reupholster the chair back and when warm weather gets here, take the carpet out on the deck and wash it. Amazing, I can tell which one has just used the box by the smell. As for communicating, Harley climbs up your back when he doesn't get what he wants right away. I wear sweatshirts, he can climb them and not the skin on my back. hHe will also try to catch that thing on the computer screen when I am on line. That gets my attention.
