Re: [Felvtalk] how long does it take for an infected cat to regain its strength

2011-11-28 Thread nckittenbird

Dana,
Macey is not on AZT... The only supplement she is on now is L-Lysine. I also
adopted another FeLv+ kitten who is 2 months older than Macey, kinda as a "big
brother" and playmate for her. Right now, both stay in my office, behind closed
doors, as I have many other cats who are not current on their FeLv vax (all
indoors). During Macey's ordeal, she did have her 3rd eyelids up most of the
time, which of course, tells you that they aren't feeling well. I forgot to
mention that since she was very congested, I also had gotten a Rx for
chlorpheniramine (antihistamine compounded into a liquid) the same day she got
the depo injection, but I never used it on her, since she started feeling
better shortly after that. She was quite the little fighter, and I knew she
wanted to survive, which sounds like your little guy, too. I think that those
of us in this group, as well as select others, always give 110% to our kittys,
especially when they are sick, and will try mostly anything to help them feel
better. I can depend on this support group (as well as the feline stomatitis
one that I belong to) to give me tons of comfort, encouragement, and loads of
new ideas/treatments for my kittys, and I am so appreciative for that.

[Felvtalk] FROM NATALIE's NEW ADDRESS: Blood Tests for Cancer Screening?

2011-11-28 Thread GRAS

Blood Tests for Cancer Screening?
November 23, 2011

I recently received a request to talk about a specific topic - newly
available blood tests for cancer in pets. I didn't know very much about the
subject, but looking into it was fascinating. Here's what I found.

Blood tests that look for the presence of biomarkers (i.e., something that
indicates the presence of disease) associated with certain types of cancer
are now commercially available. Two companies offer these tests, and they
take somewhat different approaches. One measures the blood levels of
tyrosine kinase, an enzyme that can mutate and cause unregulated cell
growth, which is the hallmark of cancer. This test can be used to look for
 lymphoma in dogs
and cats and hemangiosarcoma in dogs. The other type of test looks at a how
certain proteins are expressed in a blood sample (i.e., proteomic
biomarkers) and can be used to evaluate dogs for lymphoma. While the two
types of tests are different, they have many of the same pros and cons, so
I'll address them together.

First of all, these tests are not really "cancer screens." They cannot tell
you whether or not your dog or cat has cancer or is cancer-free. They only
evaluate for the specific cancers, lymphoma and/or hemangiosarcoma.

Also, calling them a "screening test" might make them seem a bit more
powerful than they really are. According to the National Cancer Institute,
screening is "checking for disease when there are no symptoms," but the
companies that make these tests freely admit that they should be used
primarily when there is already a high level of suspicion that a pet has the
disease in question.

For example, a dog presents with blood in its abdomen and a mass on its
spleen. The tyrosine kinase blood test might be useful in determining
whether the patient has a hemangiosarcoma versus a hematoma or other benign
mass. Another scenario where testing might be useful is in differentiating
between inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal lymphoma without the need
for intestinal biopsies, either via surgery or endoscopy.

I would not recommend these tests to my clients who have pets without
clinical signs associated with lymphoma or hemangiosarcoma. Why? The blood
tests have a relatively high rate of false positive results, which means
that a large number of clients will be told that their pets might have
cancer when they really do not. This will bring about a lot of unnecessary
worry and will necessitate additional, expensive diagnostic testing before
coming to a definitive diagnosis of "no cancer."

So as I see it, these blood tests for lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma could be
beneficial in very specific situations, but they are not true "cancer
screening tests." Keep in mind also that they have not been widely used and
therefore may have some glitches that we are not yet aware of. The results
should be looked at as just one more piece of information that must be
analyzed in combination with a pet's history, physical exam, and the
findings of more established diagnostic tests.

If anybody else has a topic they'd like to learn more about, pass it on and
I'll see what I can do.

Dr. Jennifer Coates

Czadna,
Beth is right, there is a great Yahoo group for cats with heart murmurs. The
url is http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/feline-heart/
You really do need to have an echo done by a feline cardiologist. They can
usually be found at the ag college in your state.
Now, as far as the heart meds interacting with the leukemia meds, I don't know
- you might have to have both vets talk.

Anyway, that group was immensely helpful to me when my MIssy was diagnosed with
a heart murmur.

Good luck,

This was just what I needed today. My beloved Buddy, a felv+ Maine Coon

adopted him to be a companion to my other positive cat. I am grateful that
the end came quickly and quietly, but I am heartbroken. He was the best cat

snuggled on my lap like a giant beanie baby, he got along patiently with the
other cats we have taken in. He had no "meow", just a croak, but had the

[Felvtalk] Lost our cat Uncle Binkey

2011-11-28 Thread GRAS
We came back from vacation last night, having left a sick cat in our pet
sitter's care - he has had some brain lesions, nothing to be done. Her was
still eating, getting vitamin injections from the vet, some steroids, etc.
Binkey held on until we came back. I consulted with my animal communicator
while away, and he was deteriorating so rapidly that he didn't think he
could hold on past Wednesday (last). This morning, I made a very easy and
yet difficult decision that it was time. This cat was a real caregiver to
all the cats that passed through here, on their way to new homes, etc. He is
already missed by all of us.

Natalie (note, I am temporarily using another address because while we were
away, it got so backed up that I was over quota).

I found this poem in my files:

Beyond The Rainbow

As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,
I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade.
I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free
Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.

I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side
Were meadows rich and beautiful -- lush and green and wide!
And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see
Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be!
My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new
And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do.

I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright
That this place is truly wonderful, then a bright Glow pierced the night.
'Twas the Glow of many Candles shining bright and strong and bold
And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold.

For although we may not be together in the way we used to be,
We are still connected by a cord no eye can see.
So whenever you need to find me, we're never far apart
If you look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart.

Re: [Felvtalk] heart murmur; intermittent fresh blood in stool

2011-11-28 Thread GRAS
The best thing you can do for your cat, before you even see a specialist, is
to immediately get some CoQ10, GNC Vegetarian type (it comes in powder form
in a capsule instead of oil in a gel cap). Get the 100 mg, and mix one half
of it daily into food – tasteless.

I have used it on a cat that has a heart and kidney problem for the past 1 ½
years – she is doing extremely well. All FIV/FeLV and older cats get it as
well. This does not interfere with FeLV, in fact, helps.

Any really good doctor should recommend CoQ10 for any heart problem, as well
as gum and tooth diseases.

For blood in stool – has it been analyzed? If it’s fresh blood, something
is the matter at the very end or it could be a case of just a very irritated
bowel. How about trying to put some probiotics or acidophilus in to food
and see what happens?

I have been using prebiotics for Casey wo has a problem with diahrrea. So far,
it seems to be working because I don't find any looses stools in any of the
boxes.
Hadn't thought about that for urinary prblems. Homey has reoccuring problems
with crystals in her urin. whenever I fid small clumps, I head for the
cranberry supplement. It comes in a tube and I smear it on her paws and face
so she will lick it off. She will not take meds in any form. That too is
working. Will get some of the CoQ10 for both of them. Like you said won't
hurt them. Thanks for that tip.
