Re: [Felvtalk] Asking for advice again/back to Leukemia list

2012-10-07 Thread Lee Evans
Do you have the kitten who tested positive? Usually, if the are healthy except
for the positive test, they will throw off the exposure to the virus,
especially if they are not stressed and getting good quality food and care.
The other nine, since you have them with you I assume, have very little
likelihood of becoming positive.  Most positives result from close interaction
with a cat who is a definite positive or is actually experiencing the disease.
Most kitten positives have a 50/50 chance of turning negative.  I have had two
adult positives turn negative.  Both are still alive.  One is 7 years old, the
other is about 3 but he's also FIV+ so he's in my FIV group, mainly because the
FIV group has cats who never learned not to argue with each other.  I have two
little darlings who are FIV+ mixed in with my regular community of inside cats.

Sorry you didn't get the advice you were looking for.  Even when we are not off
topic, some questions are slow to get answered or the people online at the time
really don't have the answers.  Cats who are actually leukemia positive can
live long, healthy lives.  Sometimes they live an average cat life and pass
from something that an average cat would pass from, like renal failure.  I
adopted out a FeLv+ cat to a woman who is used to taking care of cats like
that.  Her first cat passed in 2 years.  The cat she adopted from me after that
passed in 4 years and the one she adopted from me after that is still alive at
age 6.  It depends on a lot of factors, not only the FeLv.

I am surprised this list got so off topic.  A few years ago, this wouldn't be
allowed to happen.  I have very strong political opinions, and very strong
opinions about hunting, but what I rejoined this list for was only to
understand how to deal with 9 kittens from a few different litters in same
colony, where one tested positive and I think I got one, maybe two answers.

I guess it's OK to talk about other things, if a newcomer feels like he or she
has been listened to, but I did not.

For me, 9 kittens are a lot of kittens to worry about even with past LK
experience.  So I don't really see how a total newcomer would have been helped
by this list over the last week or two whatsoever.

Leukemia is scary, and this list should be an opportunity to educate.  I don't
feel comfortable sending people to this list if they are ignored.

Would rather stick to common sense, out of the box, how to help and what to
expect.    It's shame to loose this resource.  My 2 cents.

Yes, I know that but the dim wits who make the Animal Control laws in Texas

I'm not sure the authorities would even recognize it as sufficient.  The vets

Can you get a titer instead of vaxing for rabies each (three) year(s) or does
your law not allow that?

Also, I'm sure you know that 1-year and 3-year rabies vax are the same contents
with different labels.   And that experiments have shown the rabies vax lasts
at least 7 years, if not for life.

to vaccinate with the FVRCP vaccine when I know that one of my rescues will be
going for adoption though.  But I never vaccinate for leukemia.  If you have
kittens who need the FVRCP for adoption, then you do it.  But if you are
keeping them, I would
advise not to do it.  And try not to get them vaccinated at the time that you
are getting the spay/neuter operation for a cat or dog.  No medical doctor ever
gives a human patient a vaccination before surgery.  It's terribly dangerous
and I really resent vets who do that to people's pets.  However, sometimes you
need to get the rabies shot at the time of s/n surgery because you are using a
low cost clinic and you have a feral cat who can't be trapped twice. So you
have to do both at the same time. But ferals who are outside don't really need
any other vaccination once they are neutered/spayed.I also really resent the

It's not so much the individual vaccine as that they give them all at one time.
Imagine getting zapped with 3 or 4 different illnesses at one time - flu,
measles, mumps and chicken pox!!  Your immune system goes into overdrive and
then crashes because no one can fight all those infections at once.  That's
what is done to our cats when they get the FeLV, rabies and FVRCP vaccinations
at one time on top of which they are undergoing surgery to remove their
reproductive system.  Whew!

I have health insurance through the state-run high risk pool . It's
relatively expensive and there is a lot it doesn't pay for -- I am currently
paying off $295 for a regular doctor's visit and labs because I have a
pre-existing condition so no visit is EVER just an annual checkup by their
definition (which would have been free). That's in addition to $326 a month
with a $5500 deductible, which is the "low income" premium. Its major
advantage is on the drug co-pay, and they get you a *little* off your doctor
bills. I have a temp job, 5 paid days off a year, no bennies. I would have
gone under long ago if my housemate weren't extraordinarily generous (and
received a decent inheritance a few years back). I have a friend who has a
number of health issues, including panic disorder, for which she was taking
a number of meds, with meds to counteract the side effects of those meds,
you know how that goes. She had a bad patch, lost her full-time job and
benefits, and was also using this shared-risk insurance. It was increasingly
difficult coming up with the monthly premiums. Several years ago she married
and moved to England, and gets every prescription for under $10 (our money)
and now is making inroads into her panic with a psychologist. She is miles
better off there than she was here.

Y'all may not all be fans of Michael Moore, but his film Sicko was an
eye-opener. He goes around Europe and finds out that the drugs are cheap,
the doctors aren't greedy, paid sick days and vacations are plentiful and
*mandated* -- much more compassionate than here, where those of us without
paid sick days either get into financial trouble or suck it up and work
sick. He also took a bunch of sick people, many of them first-responders on
9/11, by boat to Gitmo, since the medical care there is supposed to be
great, to demand equal treatment for US citizens as prisoners of war get.
They couldn't land on Gitmo and diverted to Cuba, where each and every
person was evaluated and prescribed meds which were actually better than
they were getting in the States, and those meds cost a fraction of the
price. One woman was going bankrupt at home to pay for her inhaler for her
9/11 lung damage, I think in the states she was charged something like $120,
and in Cuba that inhaler cost something like $5. The thing about health care
is that if the costs can be brought under control, a LOT of our country's
economic and social problems get solved, and the federal government is the
only entity with enough power to do that. The individual states aren't up to
it.

Hi ~ just my opinion,

I had always wondered, "Why should we believe Snopes.com?" Who is checking
on them to make sure they are telling the truth and have facts." I went on
their site along time ago and there was nothing that convinced me they would
know anymore than anyone else that knows how to work, or manipulate
computers.

The bottom line is if anyone ever REALLY wants to know the truth about
anything said, or on-line, you have to research/investigate it yourself. IF
I care enough, that is what I do. I learned that lesson the hard way many
years ago..

IF anyone cares enough to go outside of Snopes.com to research the
information below to see if it is true ~ your choice. Why would this person
not be telling the truth anymore than Snopes.com? My point is why should
anyone believe Snopes.com. Who are they really.and. the truth has

Just my two cents~

Many of the emails that I have sent or forwarded that had any

I thought that was odd. Check this out.

Snopes, Soros and the Supreme Court’s Kagan.

We-l-l-l-l now, I guess the time has come to check out Snopes!

We've known that it was owned by a lefty couple,

   Snopes is heavily financed by George Soros;
a big time supporter of Obama!

In our Search for the Truth department,
we find what I have suspected on many occasions.

I went to Snopes to check something about the dockets of the new
Supreme Court Justice, Elena Kagan who Obama appointed
and Snopes said the email was false and there were no such
dockets so I Googled the Supreme Court, typed in Obama-Kagan,
and guess what?

Yep, you got it; Snopes Lied!

Everyone of those dockets are there.

So Here is what I wrote to Snopes:

Referencing the article about Elena Kagan and Barack Obama dockets:

The information you have posted stating that there were no such cases
as claimed and the examples you gave are blatantly false.

I went directly to the Supreme Courts website, typed in Obama Kagan
and immediately came up with all of the dockets that the article made
reference to.

I have long suspected that you really slant things but this was
really shocking.

Thank You! I hope you will be much more truthful in the future, but
I doubt it.

That being said, I’ll bet you didn't know this:

Kagan was representing Obama in all the petitions to prove his
citizenship.

Now she may help rule on them.

Folks, this is really ugly. Chicago Politics; and the beat goes on and on
and on.

Once again the US Senate sold us out!

Now we know why Obama nominated Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court.

Pull up the Supreme Courts website, go to the docket and search for Obama.

She was the Solicitor General for all the suits against him filed with the
Supreme Court to show proof of natural born citizenship.

He owed her big time.

All of the requests were denied of course. They were never heard.

It just keeps getting deeper and deeper, doesn't it?

The American people mean nothing any longer.

It's all about payback time for those who compromised themselves
to elect someone who really has no true right to even be there.

Here are some websites of the Supreme Court Docket:

You can look up some of these hearings and guess what?

Elena Kagan is the attorney representing Obama!

Ridiculous. The one true fact about the internet is that anybody can find
validation for ANY wackadoo opinion. I bet you could find a "scientific" study

There is a refutation of this forwarded stuff (which has been around since

I'm sure you could find a refutation and charges of bias about About.com if you
wanted to. The bottom line is, vote who you want to, but make *yourself* aware
of the character of your candidate. Watch the person over a period of time;
does he contradict himself from one week to the next? Does he promise more than
he can deliver? Does he give details about his plans? Does he keep the promises
he has made in the past? By these criteria, there's nobody in politics who
truly stands up 100% to scrutiny. But unlike in horseshoes, in politics "close"
does count. Have these people made an effort to act on the things they say they
believe in? And are those beliefs based on the good of every single person in
the United States, not just a select group? These are things each person has
to decide for him- or herself.

Again it really depends on the kitten.  I've rescued 10 FeLV kittens.  All had
their rabies shot and initial series of FVRCP shots.  All were asymptomatic at
the time.  None got sick from the vaccines.  I eventually lost all of them to
FeLV.  They lived from 1 yr to 4 yrs.  It is a decision each individual has to
make.  Mine got their rabies vax because it is required by law.  They got the
FVRCP series of 2 shots because I did not want to risk them getting distemper.

There is no one rule that applies to all cats except to love them and give them
the best food and care you can.  It broke my heart to lose my FeLV babies but
they brought me so much joy.  I only hope I was able to give them 1/2 of what
they gave me.

Hugs to yours

This week, my sweetest, mushiest cat bit me- and I ended up in er a couple
of times & had an overnight in the hospital to be pumped full of iv

without insurance. They would have been admitted (considered life
threatening) & then I would have had to pay for part of it out of my taxes
for Medicaid. Wouldn't it be better if we had a system where everybody could
get affordable health insurance--everybody I know who doesn't have insurance
doesn't have it cause they can't find a low cost plan (I'm in NY).

The individual states aren't up to
it.

Ridiculous. The one true fact about the internet is that anybody can find
validation for ANY wackadoo opinion. I bet you could find a "scientific" study
affirming that cats are descended from dogs and that birds are the result of
magic.

There is a refutation of this forwarded stuff (which has been around since

I'm sure you could find a refutation and charges of bias about About.com if you
wanted to. The bottom line is, vote who you want to, but make *yourself* aware
of the character of your candidate. Watch the person over a period of time;
does he contradict himself from one week to the next? Does he promise more than
he can deliver? Does he give details about his plans? Does he keep the promises
he has made in the past? By these criteria, there's nobody in politics who
truly stands up 100% to scrutiny. But unlike in horseshoes, in politics "close"

Re: [Felvtalk] Asking for advice again/back to Leukemia list

2012-10-07 Thread GRAS
As someone posted already, as soon as someone needs advice, the off topic will
change immediately. This happens during a lull – we haven’t had any serious
issues for a while!, which is good. Then your problem came along, and I saw
quite a few replies from several people; if you feel it wasn’t enough, ask
again, what specific concerns or explanations you require after the advice was
given.

Yes, FeLV is super serious, and this is exactly where you can get help.

My 2 cents.

I just Googled it and sure enough, this is the one. If you want more

Re: [Felvtalk] O T

2012-10-07 Thread Lee Evans
Long ago, around 1985, just after my dad passed away, I had a minor health
issue and a lot of health worries.  At that time I had insurance through Met
Life because I was self employed.  Unfortunately, the insurance (always read
the fine print) did not cover a basic glucose tolerance test, a thyroid test,
or a Pap smear.  It did cover a broken bone, various sprains and other
injuries.  The problem was I was afraid of adult onset diabetes since my dad's
entire family had it and one brother died at age 50 when he went into a
diabetic coma.  I had to spend a whole lot of money to get the tests I needed.
Fortunately, no diabetes.  I do have hypoglycemia and that was what was making
me woozy and unsettled.  But it cost me over a thousand dollars to find this
out.  Mom said not to cancel the Met Life policy because I drive and she was
afraid I would have an accident and tremendous health cost to get patched up
and glued together.  Well, every 6
months they raised the premium until I was paying over $1,000 every six
months. I cancelled and did not have health coverage until recently when I
became eligible for Medicare. This is why small businesses fail, in my opinion,
because people are looking for jobs that give benefits and health insurance
coverage and small businesses just can't afford to insure two or three
workers.  This also effects the care of our rescued cats and dogs.  If we are
paying thousands of dollars for our own health insurance or issues we can't
usually afford to give them the treatments they need, the yearly physical exams
to catch issues like beginning renal problems, elevated glucose, etc..  Then in
a year or two it becomes a major veterinary expense because the problem has
gotten worse.

The individual states aren't up to
it.

The bottom line is if anyone ever REALLY wants to know the truth about anything
said, or on-line, you have to research/investigate it yourself. IF I care
enough, that is what I do. I learned that lesson the hard way many years ago..

IF anyone cares enough to go outside of Snopes.com to research the information
below to see if it is true ~ your choice. Why would this person
not be telling the truth anymore than Snopes.com? My point is why should
anyone believe Snopes.com. Who are they really.and. the truth has to

Just my two cents~

would be treated under each party. I feel people like most of us, who are sort
of getting by or not quite getting by or getting by only because we get a

every specialized list I have been on there is a subject with OT listed and
then
it's either a funny article copied from a magazine or other online source or
some cute pictures of cats doing silly things, or even a heated political
discussion about who will be President and how it would effect our ability to
financially keep our heads above water and still feed our rescues and take our
cats to the vet when needed. It really does tie into the FeLv+ cat group
because we are very money intensive in trying to keep our rescued special needs
cats as healthy as can be for as long as can be. If I lose my Social Security
and Medicare benefits or they are reduced, I would have to cut down on food for
myself and air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter to pay my
mortgage on this house that I bought to keep my cats safe from being seized by
Animal Control in a city where there are cat limits. Even though I still work
and have an online job, I would be in dire straits. So it is very important to
my cats who I vote for. And since I live in a rural area, hunting becomes a
problem for me also. If the NRA controls the government, then my 3 outside
cats
and my peacock are in danger. I actually hear gunshots sometimes in the
daytime
on weekends and it makes me tremble.

Re: [Felvtalk] 9 kittens, one testing pos

2012-10-07 Thread Sharyl
Janine, I'm not sure where you got the 28 days from exposure to testing
positive.   I don't think it is that cut and dried.  Most of what I have read
suggest retesting in 60-90 days.  Like someone else has posted I wouldn't worry
about the other 8 kittens.  I believe you wrote the one kitten has been
isolated from the other 8.  FeLV is not as contagious as some would leave you
to believe.

I hope someone with more information will respond.

Subject: [Felvtalk] 9 kittens, one testing pos

Can anyone explain to me why if from point of exposure to actually testing pos
is 28 days, if this is correct, why we can't just retest in one month using
Elisa?  And if all excepting the one testing weak pos, stjill test neg, is this
good enough?  All 8 kittens and some of their moms tested neg, just the one a
weak pos.  I am asking because I am trying to make this make sense to me and
keep everyone safe.  And foster homes understanding.

Thanks,
Janine

Re: [Felvtalk] Vaccinations

2012-10-07 Thread Beth
Mine were not symptomatic at the time they got the FVRCP. They became
symptomatic immediately afterward. If there is a huge risk of getting
panleukopenis (sp?) You might want to take the risk - if you rescue a lot from
AC. Otherwise it is another thing for their immune system to deal with. I don't
give any of my cats FVRCP vax anymore since I stopped fostering except fot the
FeLVs.

Do a search on Amazon for nematodes for fleas and you'll find several

Since we live in a safe area with no traffic all my cats go
outside except for 3 who never even try.  I work hard to keep
the fleas down, and use Advantage, flea comb, and flea traps in
every room, but I never heard of nematodes. Where do I get them?
