Re: [Felvtalk] (no subject)
My concern was that someone came for help and was concerned because of what was being said. I don't know that I would call it going downhill-it is difficult finding help when dealing with this virus and it is disheartening when someone comes and can't get help. I remember being in their place and reading about cobra venom, can you imagine how desperate one is to think that route,-it is hard to find proper treatments or how to find the right vet. This site gave me hope, told me to stand up to my vet who said put the cat down, and then gave me what they used or knew so I could take it to my vet. In the end there is another vet in this world that believes that FeLV+ cats can be treated and do not need to be put down. I send people because this is the greatest group I know with a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to share. They felt this wasn't a place of help. I know that there are so many here that could write the best how-to book on treatments. We need that knowledge to help those that are told-you need to put that at down like I was told, because there are treatments. It usually happens when no one has any dire FeLV emergencies, and then there are times when it's nothing but FeLV issues. I belong to several groups, and this often happens in a lull. Re: [Felvtalk] Cali - 7 month old kitten
Cathy I came to this site in the same manner. My kitten was 9 months when he died and my vet said to put my others down immediately. I was shocked! My Russian Blue had become positive despite being vaccinated. I refused. Basil was with me 2 more years very happy and healthy. He then began to show signs of illness. In the end he lived 3 years after the vet wanted to kill him. What I did was come home, found this site, and began to learn treatment plans. I then took everything to the vet--I changed his opinion. Although Basil did contract Feline Leukemia, my other cat Rumpleteaser never did. She didn't get contract the disease even from Basil and I mixed them. There are others here that will offer wonderful advice and guide you, I say for the sake of your heart listen and make your own decision. -Original Message- From: felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org [mailto:felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org] On Behalf Of ckess...@cox.net Sent: Tuesday, June 21, 2011 2:41 PM To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: [Felvtalk] Cali - 7 month old kitten I am new the site and I am just crushed. I have never had cats before and I adopted a shelter kitten from Petco in Plano, Texas. She had Ringworm to start with and she was tiny, but she was playful and is as sweet as can be. We live in Downtown Dallas so she sits in the window of our high-rise and overlooks the skyline. Last week, she became very lethargic and on Friday, I became worried so I took her to the emergency room. She's always been little, but playful and happy until last week. They did a Feline Leukemia test and it was positive. The only thing I had ever heard about Feline Leukemia before Friday night was that all cats who get it - die. Cali is only 7 months old and I can't stop crying. I just moved to Dallas last July. I have always had Dachshunds but I didn't think that dogs should be in apartments, so I got Cali. Then I didn't want Cali to be by herself, so I got another shelter kitty from the Petco in Bedford, (named Sasha) and she is very healthy. The emergency room vet and the Vet that I took Cali to have both told me that I need to put Cali to sleep so that Sasha won't get sick and Cali won't get better so she should be put down. For all of you out there, please say a prayer for me and Cali. She is a Blue Cream Tabby, she weighs 5 pounds and she has been a real fighter. I don't know how I will find the strength to put her to sleep. She is so little. I want her to get better. I can't stop crying. Best Wishes, Estelle Munro Assistant Editor -Original Message- From: Laurieskatz [mailto:lauriesk...@mchsi.com] Sent: Tue 1/26/2010 7:21 PM To: Estelle Munro Subject: Virginia Clemans article regarding Feline Leukemia Viirus Dear Editor: The article about Feline Leukemia Virus by Virginia Clemans is inconsistent with my experience and, I believe, does a great injustice to cats diagnosed with this virus. Certainly not all cats diagnosed with FeLV have the health issues Clemans reports. I lived with two cats who were diagnosed with feline leukemia after I adopted them. Stripes lived to age 16 years. Squeaky lived to age 22 years. They were robust boy cats who lived together for 15 years. They weighed 15-16 lbs. People always commented about what big boys they were. They were playful and fully engaged in life. Stripes had an occasional undiagnosed illness that always resolved. Squeaky was never sick a day in his life until his final three weeks. Squeaky died from oral cancer. We did not determine Stripes' cause of death. My vets did not treat these cats any differently than other cats I have had. There was no alarm sounded when their tests came back positive. The information was given to me as part of a routine exam. I had no idea anyone thought this was a big deal. Certainly my vets did not think so. I rescued two other cats who tested positive for FeLV. Ollie lived to an old age, asymptomatic except for some dental issues at the time he was rescued. Bella is still alive. She is a 13 lb ball of love. She was rescued 3 years ago and was an adult cat at that time. She was anemic and had a high fever when rescued but these situations quickly resolved with medication treatment by an internal medicine specialist. Feline Leukemia does not have to be a death sentence. The kitties who test positive should be retested as there can be false positives (and false negatives). Their owners can find information and support groups on the internet (yahoo offers several groups for FeLV cat owners). In this group format they can talk to other people who live or have lived with cats with FeLV. They can get questions answered. They can learn about feeding a quality food, keeping stress to a minimum and various supplements and treatments in the event of illness. Not all the cats who test positive will be as lucky as those I mentioned here, but there is another side to this disease and there are many cats who survive and thrive
