[Felvtalk] Ash
Amani, Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the blood work testing to me and ease my mind some. He seem to have a little bit of upset stomach at supper time today again and kind of picked at his food but did eat and is still behaving normal otherwise. We have another vet appointment in the morning to recheck to make sure the fever is staying down, so maybe if she thinks his stomach is getting upset again the vet can give him another injection for his stomach to help him until we can get rid of the infection. The vet said give Orbax for 10 days. Is that what others have done for infections or have you given it longer. Thanks so much (hopefully I can now sleep better). Thanks again, Karen and Ash ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

BchapelHow old is your cat? Our guys had all kinds of problems---almost constant from 6 months to 12 months. But then they did great for about 3 years. But know all of a sudden they have been hit. Cole got sick and in 2 weeks he was gone. Now two months after that his brother is sick and I am so frightened. We thought we had this feline leukemia beat, but there appears to be not such thing. But I am so thankful for the 3 good years, just wanted more with Cole and am praying we get more with his two brothers. Each time I learn more, but a horrible way to learn. Sorry my blood work results is such a mess. It looked good when I typed it and looked good in my sent box, but when transfered to felvtalk it got totally messed up. I am going to try this another way and just give the results that were not normal for now and will try to type the full results another way later. everything was normal range on the recent blood work except for BUN was low with15 mg/dL range(16-36), EOS was low with 0.13 K/uL range (0.17-1.57), PLT 24 K/uL range (151-600). Two month ago everything on the test was in normal range except he tested positive for feline leukemia for the first time since a kitten (with two negative tests after that three years ago) all on the quick test done in the office. I don't know if anyone can tell anything from this limited information. I will try to send the full results another way, but it is going to take me a while. Thanks everyone for the prayers and assistance, Karen and Ash, BJ and angle Cole (the three amigos as we called them because they are so bonded and Ash and BJ so miss their brother Cole)___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

[Felvtalk] Help with Ash, Coles brother
two months ago we lost our sweet Cole to liver failure, anemia, blood clotting tests was off the charts it was so thin, who knows what else (possible infection from fleas), and feline leukemia. He died in my arms. Don't know which is worse, having to make the decision to help them cross over or having them gasp for their last breath in your arms. It all started with Cole not wanting to eat. Now his brother Ash stopped eating yesterday and I am scared to death. If anyone has some advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Today we took Ash to the vet because he had not eaten for 24 hours and threw up first white mucus and then pinkish mucus later. the vet said he had a very high fever. Here is the results of the bloodwork for two months ago when we had him and his two brothers tested and current bloodwork. Ashs blood work is much better than Coles was, so I hope more can be done for Ash and pray we do not loose him two. [Felvtalk] Urgent help with flea treatment question
As most of you know, we lost our Cole to feline leukemia and liver complications this month. I don't have time to morn my dear sweet Cole as I am struggling to save his brother Ash. Ash tested positive again this month (4 years ago tested positive once and then negative twice). However his blood work shows everything in the normal range and he is eating and playing and going to the bathroom and seems healthy, so the vet has recommended no treatment or preventatives at this time. They only suggest another blood work check in one to 4 months and flea treatment. Ash and his brother have fleas. I know I must treat but that seems like when Cole started going downhillwhen I treated for fleas with Frontline twice.Frontline did nothing for the fleas, even though I threw away all beds and blankets and cleaned their living quarters. I fear that the fleas or treatment or both did something to Cole to take his life. But I know I have to treat fleas too. I have tried combing everyday, but that does not work either. Has anyone used Vectra flea treatment for cats. It has worked well for me for other cats, but I fear that it might be too strong for our Ash with the feline leukemia. As I said I used Frontline originally cause I was told it was safer because it could be used on young kittens even. Ash is 4 1/2 years old and I know I have to do something about the fleas. Please let me know if you have used Vectra flea treatment. Or if you use something else successfully or don't use flea treatment at all with feline leukemia. Ash never goes outside, so I don't know where they got the fleas unless at vet or we brought the fleas in from outside on shoes, etc. Please Helpthis is urgent as I feel I must do something to get rid of fleas that already seem out of hand since 2 treatments of Frontline did not work, and I am so worried about anything with Ash with his positive on the feline leukemia test at the vet and after loosing Cole. My heart just cant loose another of my fur babies. Please Help!!! Re: [Felvtalk] Felvtalk Digest, Vol 28, Issue 14
Amani, I talked to a vet at Cornell U at their consult services today for a second opinion since things are not going well for Cole. He throws up almost every night after eating just a little ( tonight he threw up just in anticipated food-- no food-- because he is so nausea). He is going to starve to death with interferon and syringe feeding that has turned into force feeding! Anyway Cornell U mentioned pednisone too but not winstrol How did you learn of this and I assume it is available in US? It took my vet a week to get interferon (that I now read will cause nausea, so now afraid to start it) , so afraid Cole dies nit have another week to find winstrol! Cornell U vet recommended every other day fluids, milk thistle and or denamarin to support liver, cerenia injection to help with vomiting, cyproheptading to stimulate appetite. And like i said earlier, prednisone. Also, no supportive research but go ahead and give interferon that my vet ordered cause some have success with. I would live ti see the rest of your posts but dont know how to find. I have to do something different tomorrow than just force feed and orbax amd interferon or I am certain i will loose Cole and then probably his 2 brothers will follow from the Stress Because they are so extremely bonded. Re: [Felvtalk] Felvtalk Digest, Vol 28, Issue 9
How did you know there was enlarged lymth nodes? Bloodwoork or X-ray or exam? All I have is blood work listed here. Vet does not want to use steroids of any kind she said cause liver is already struggling per blood work and steroids can cause liver illness. I have tried AD and baby food-- he threw them up. So now I am using ID cause vet said easy to digest. I blend it and strain so it probably is nit the best calories with water added too but first two syringes today has stayed down. But night is when he looses any daytime gains so we will see. If I cant figure out soon if not already too late how to get more calories in him I am afraid he will pass point of no return. We have interferon ordered but taking forever to get here-- been a week. [Felvtalk] Can't eat
I come to you for suggestions for our Cole. We got Cole as a litter rescue from our yard We feed the strays and a little very young mother left them at our door We already had some house cats so built a kennel to shelter them Outside and began To look for homes for them. Then two litter kittens showed up and old tom. A no kill shelter took the littler kittens. They found out one if them tested positive for feline leukemia. We tested rest of ours and all but the one female tested positive. So we cleaned out our garage, insulated, heated, air conditioned and sheltered them there. No matter what we did little Tig was so sick That he died before he was a yr old. He was such a sweet little cat that considered everything and anyone a toy--so sad. The rest tested negative the next two test. We all lived happily for next 3 1/2 years. Until this week Cole stopped eating. Took him to vet and here is bad part. Tested positive for feline leukemia again Bun10 (16-3( Alt 294(12-130) Alkp 144(14-111) Tbil 4.2(0.0-0.9) Rbc 4.02 (8.54-12.20) Hct 21.1(30.3-52.3) Hgb 6.8(9.8-16.2) Wbc 2.06(2.87-17.02 Neu 0.50(1.48-10.29) Lym 0.74(0.92-6.88) Plt 39(151-600) Rest was in normal range The vet gave Cole subcutaneous fluids, polyflex/dexasone injection, b complex injection, and clavamox drops on last wednesday. But he cant eat and i am syringe feeding AD prscription Food. First few days was able to get him to take 2 syringes but then threw up and have not been able to get him past One syringe since then without him throwing up. He threw up food three times and phlem or hair. He is very alert, drinking, urinating 2-4 times a day, no BM until one little turd today He bathes Self after he eats, shinny healthy looking hair. Took Cole back today and vet did same as before but We changed to Orbax instead of clavamox. I was very excited tonight cause he attempted to eat But only licked gravy of purina Fancy feast., but was start. Later this evening after syringe feed only 3 ml he threw up what looked like two meals!! He seems to have a good day, but then has setback with throwup--- three times he has done that . He has lost a pound in 6 days!!. So worried cause he cant eat on own and keeps throwing up. His brother Ash tested positive again too but his bloodwork is all in normal range and seems ti be doing fine. His other brother BJ tested negative and bloodwork all normal range. Vet suggested no treatment for them. I housed them together and seperated Cole. I am so worried that we are going to loose Cole because he cant eat and keeps throwing up syringed food. Also worried about Ashs positive test for feline leukemia again. Sorry for lenght but thought you wpuld need all info. Please advise as soon as possible. [Felvtalk] Need home for FELV cat in Ft. Worth
To felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Today at 7:53 PM Gloria Lane and Lance, There are two shelters that I know of in Iowa that rescue Feline Leukemia cats Carmen Conklin at CW Shelter in Northeast Iowa cwshel...@wildblue.net; and Witty Kitty in Solon, Iowa Jennifer Doll jkd...@gmail.com. Not sure how they would get there but maybe they know of a transport if they have an available spot. There is a transport that helps with dogs called Heinz 57 Rescue and Transport in Desoto, Ia. --- maybe they would help with the cat. Also, this lady with the feline leukemia cat needs to know that one test does not a diagnosis make depending upon the test used. It could be a false positive, if the cat is young, it could fight it off with good medical care (I got lucky and had 4 that fought it off), the cat can live with feline leukemia (probably just a shortened life), etc. Is there a reason she does not want to keep the cat? Please keep me posted. Thanks, Karen___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
[Felvtalk] testing
After the long discussion that I just got on testing, I am really confused and concerned. I have a group of 6---one senior and the others a year old. It was suspected that they were exposed to a cat with feline leukemia so I had them tested. All but the one year old female tested positive on the Elsa---I believe it was that---did not really ask but it was a test done in the vet office in about 15 0r 20 minutes. I moved them all indoors and got heaters and airconditioning for my garage (where they live), treated them aggressively, fed them more and better, and tried to reduce their stress as much as possible with climbers toys attention and love. One did not make it after a month, but he was the sickest and kept separate from the start in the garage-the negative female has been kept in the garage, but separate as well. Anyway 3 months later the remaining 5 all tested negative on the same test by same vet. We were feeling very happy and hopeful. We plan to have them retested this week (about 2 months since the last test) and were hoping and praying that we once again get a negative test. We were thinking that if they were negative a second time, that we would be free and clear of this horrible illness and not have to worry about them and did not have to worry about keeping them all separate from each other and our other inside cats. But after reading this recent discussion I worry that another negative snap test won't mean anything. Should I have the Elsa test done instead or also---if I can come up with the money? Should I have another vet and lab do it? Do I have to worry about them for the rest of their lives that this will pop its ugly head up again in years to come as carriers or what? Thanks, Karen___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
[Felvtalk] foster kittens testing positive
Kathrine, I am by no means an authority on feline leukemia, because the group I have now is the first group I have had testing positive. I am here to continue to learn also. But my suggestion would be to be extremely aggressive in treatment---any sniffle sneeze runny eyes or anything, get them to the vet for treatment, feed them the best food you can afford and feed them more often, keep them inside in controlled temperatures, and give them all the time and love you can find time for (you have to really get to know these little kittens so you notice anything wrong immediately). I did that and we got a little lucky. One of the kittens was too far along with sicknesses and I had zero knowledge so unfortunately we lost him. But the other 4 (3 of his brothers and 1 senior cat) tested negative on their second test and have been growing, eating better, and seem to be more healthy now. We are crossing our fingers/paws/toes,/etc and praying that the third test in about a week will be negative also and mean they were able to fight this horrible illness off (and the first test showed only a false positive or exposure, not infection with). I will pray you get lucky too, since they have not been sick and mom tested positive that is a plus for them (but being so young makes for a weaker system to fight, so). Please keep me posted. Hopefully it will work for them too and then they have a better chance of finding a home. [Felvtalk] goodby little one
It is with a sad heart that I remember a little cat that came into our lives one cold winter morning this past winter. She lost her battle with feline leukemia last night. Little Squirt --- later to become Penelope (Penny) squeezed her way into our outside kennel and into our hearts. She was sick and needed help, shelter and love; which we gave without question. With medical care, she seemed to become better. We already had so many cats, so I put out a cry for help and assistance. Panora P.E.T.S.. (bless their hearts) offered to take her and her brother to try to help them find a forever home. They found them a foster home while waiting, but soon learned that Penelope had to leave her brother for a new foster home and a cat friend (that also has feline leukemia) because it was discovered she had feline leukemia. She seemed to be doing okay, but this horrible illness finely claimed her life. I remember a beautiful sweet loving cat that was so tiny and loved to be cuddled and cradled like a baby in my arms. Hopefully her friend that she made hereour other cat (Tig) that also lost his battle to this horrible illnessare now playing together in cat heaven and never know illness or pain again---nothing but happiness. Poor little Penelope never found her forever home here on earthbut I know she at least found love from all of those that tried to help her, including us. I cried when we took her to Panora but knew they could give her a better chance of finding a inside loving home. Penelope---know we will always love you and Tig, and you will forever be in our hearts.___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

Has anyone ever had this and/or what do you have to say about what is going on with my guys? He used the quick in house test---for get the name---not the send out lab test that takes longer for results. [Felvtalk] prayers
Just need some prayers tonight for Cole. He tested positive along with his brothers for feline leukemia about 3 months ago. The have all been doing pretty good, eating well, playing, happy and loving, etc. But then two of his brothers started having problems with scab like bumps and the vet doesn't seem to know what it is. Now Cole refused to eat his supper tonight and I am so worried for him and his brothers. They are due for their second test in about a week. They were doing so good I was hoping that they would test negative and was able to fight their exposure. But now with this I am so afraid for them. And not eating is the worst, cause I am so afraid he won't start eating again. Please say a prayer for him that it is just a little normal stomach upset and tomorrow he will clean his plate at breakfast. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
[Felvtalk] Fw: prayers
Okay, now my request for prayers has turned to a plea for help! See below what is going on with Cole tonight. Now he is throwing up white bubbly phlem besides refusing to eat. I am getting so worried about him. How can he go from playing, happy, eating, etc; to not eating anything and throwing up so quickly! I don't know who to turn to, what to do, or which vet to go to (Dr Dill--our caring 50year experienced vet that tends to do things the more old fashioned way, Allgood Vet in Burlington that we just started seeing sometimes for blood tests so I am not sure how experienced they are with feline leukemia or take him to the 24 hour 7 day a week emergency in Iowa City that wasn't able to help Tig, although he may have been to far along for any help, but they are very expensive and I am not sure how much more vet bills I can afford) ; and I am so scared for Cole. I have already lost Tig and so quicklyI just can't loose Cole now too so soon. I hope to be more proactive with Cole and nip this in the bud before it takes over and the leukemia kicks in full force---I so want to give him a few more happy years that he so deserves. Anyone have any ideas? I am so not good at this and need help. I worry that I should have been doing more already, but they all seemed to be doing pretty good so I hated to be pumping a bunch of medicine into them before they needed it---but guess this is where I failed. When Ash got some scabs scratched off and was bleeding, I took him to the vet for medicine so he would not get infection. But if they were doing good I thought all I needed to do was make sure they got a good balanced diet and love. Many of you talk of inferion, but that sure didn't seem to help Tig at all---it actually seem to make him worse faster, so I guess I am afraid of that. But I am so very worried about Cole and would really appreciate hearing your suggestions My email is harshbargerka...@yahoo.com for those of you that don't have it. [Felvtalk] struggling tonight
Hi, I joined all of these group cause I have kittys with all of these illnesses---one with CRF, 4 with feline leukemia, and little Tig that I lost had very bad anemia/feline leukemia/upper respiratory/etc.etc. and unfortunately I know that Anemia is probably coming for my 4 kittys with feline leukemia---just a matter of when. My kitty with CRF has slight anemia. I have 5 other cats that live with me and there are 2 little ones that recently showed up on my patio. Tonight I am sitting up with one of my kitties that has feline leukemia because he is sick he is throwing up white bubbly phlem and would not eat tonight. (before tonight, he was doing so good I thought that he might be one of the lucky ones that would fight off this awful illness before his second test) Cole is very sick and I am very very worried about him and just trying to figure out what I am going to do next so that I don't loose him like I lost his brother little Tig recently As I read through all the posts I realize that there are a lot of caring people out there trying very hard to do what I am doingkeep their cats as happy and healthy as they can and with them as long as they can. It is a good thing that there are so many caring people, but a sad thing that there are so many sick little cats. .I also wonder how all of you afford to get all the tests and medicines, as I am really struggling with that and not sure how I am financially going to keep up and worry that I am not doing all that I can or should cause I can't afford to do all these expensive blood tests, etc or a regular basis. so that better diagnosis can be done. I also worry that the vets around here are not up on all the latest things to help my little ones with all their illnesses.and that I am not smart enough to understand it all to figure out if the vet is doing the right thing. I some times worry, especially nights like this when I sit up tired and very worried with a sick little cat that I did not know enough or do enough for little Tig, causing him to leave this world at only 11 months old. I also worry that I am not giving these little guys all that they need. Would love hearing any suggestions. Sorry about the rambling. I am just struggling to find direction as I sit up with poor little sick Cole as he struggles with this awful illness. [Felvtalk] struggling tonight
Thanks to all for the calming support and suggestions. I guess I panic because I just lost my little Tig(Cole's brother) not that long ago (little over a month ago). It was when Tig stopped eating that he went down very fast in just a short time and he never came back to me-and I feel I did not panic enough or do enough when he first stopped eating. Rest assured he will get lots of love and I will try not to put him through a lot of useless things. [Felvtalk] concerned
Have you ever had any of your cats with Feline Leukemia get scabs on them. One of mine had just a few around his neck for quite some time (even before we got feline leukemia tests results), and now he has got more on his body. Then either in rough housing or scratching himself, he pulled the scab off of two and they bled pretty bad. So I took him to the vet, cause I did not want to risk any infections with those open sores. She did not offer any diagnosis of the scabs---says lots of things could cause. But she gave him an injection of polyflex and gave me some medication (Clindamycin Drops) to give him 1 ml a day for 7-14 days. Now I am noticing these same scabs on the others as I pet them---but no bleeding with them so I have not taken them to the vet for any treatment yet. Everyone seems fine---eating, drinking, playing and using litter box. But the scabs have me a little concerned. With their feline leukemia, I don't want to let something get out of control if it could be serious. They do not have fleas---that is something both the vet and I checked for, and they have been treated for flea protection.
