[Felvtalk] Help my Mickey
I adopted Mickey when he was about 5 months old and found out he was positive for felv. For 8 years he displayed no signs of the virus until last December when he fell in the garage about 8 feet and did not land on his feet. Although he was not seriously hurt this apparently triggered something with the virus. He became lethargic and would not eat. My vet at the time began a series of the immuno regulen shots and after about 3 months began giving them to him every two weeks. Last week I awoke to find flood all over my bed and followed the trail of blood drops through the house to Mickey. He had an adenoma on his back leg (which I had not noticed) which burst open. I took him to the vet I currently have and he said normally he would perform surgery to remove it but in Mickey's condition surgery would be dangerous for him. The adenoma had stopped bleeding by now so I said ok. It was fine all week until yesterday and it burst open again. He cannot keep losing blood this way and I was wondering if anyone else had encountered a situation like this.I thought of asking my vet if he would switch Mickey to prednisone to see if that would promote healing. Any suggestions? Marylyn, No I don't think there is a homeopathic vet in my area but I will check into that. Thank you for responding. I have never regretted keeping Mickey. He has brought me so much pleasure and I thank God for every day I have with him. He is a little black and white tuxedo cat who weighs a whopping 7 pounds. [Felvtalk] update on Mickey
I sent this earlier but I don't think it went through. I wrote a couple of weeks ago that my cat, Mickey, was going to have a growth removed from his leg that kept bleeding. The biopsy came back as malignant hemangio sarcoma. Even though it was on the skin and the doctor said he was 99% sure he got it all, I have been told that it will probably come back in his lungs or heart. I don't think I want to put him through chemo if it does. I want him to have as many good days as he can. I know Amy. I've been letting this little cat in and out of my house but it stresses Mickey out so much that I won't leave her in and the weather is turning cold and messy. I found someone who will take her and her mother but they will have to be outside cats and I just hate that. At least if she stays at my house I will provide shelter even if she has to stay out most of the time. I know and that is the main thing with me adopting this new 9 month old kitten. My felv cat, Mickey, is NOT happy about it and I worry about what the stress of another cat will have on him. [Felvtalk] My Mickey
In October I joined the group requesting information on hemangio sarcoma which my felv cat was diagnosed with. Everything I read was bad. He had the first tumor removed on 10-13-08. It came back this time two tumors and they were removed on 1-6-09. This surgery was very, very difficult on him to get over. Then on 2-13-09 the vet discovered it had come back even more rapidly than the first time. x-rays showed nothing in the lungs or spleen but the liver was hard to see though not enlarged. This past Monday he stopped eating and drinking and I knew it was time. The next morning I took my heart disguised as a little 7 pound black and white angel to the vet for the final time. The night before I laid him on the bed next to me and he stared into my face purring for hours. The cancer had spread to his liver and I knew I could not stand for him be in pain. Before I took him to the vet I wrapped him in his cat blanket and walked him all over the yard so he could see his ducks and feel the air on his face. He loved to be outside. So from start to finish he lived 19 weeks from diagnosis. This is a deadly, aggressive cancer and I hope none of you experience it with your babies. I had my little man for 8 years and 7 months and they were worth every minute. Thank you Jane. I have two other cats that I love but they are pets. Mickey was my heart. Why do you have to lose the ones you love the most. In the 17 months that he was receiving the equi-stem shots for im-regulen he was at the vet 57 times. He was such a sweet little guy and endured it so well. But he is over it now. Maybe he is sitting on my daddy's porch in Heaven and they are basking in the sunshine. I really hope so. Tonya, You were very lucky to have had Shaft for 15 years although I know if we had them for 30 years it would not seem long enough. I can feel your grief right now because I had to have my Mickey put down two weeks ago tomorrow. He'd had malignant tumors removed twice and they had come back and apparently had spread to his liver. I had him for 8 1/2 years and he was about 7 mos old when I found him. I still miss him so much it hurts. And up until the tumors showed up in October he had a good life. So if I had had him euthanized as the vet suggested I would have missed out on the most wonderful cat of my life.
