Re: [Felvtalk] Pet Armor

2011-06-01 Thread POTT, BEVERLY
Even if you have indoor-only cats, they can get fleas. A vet once told
me, If a squirrel runs through your yard, you can have a flea
infestation in the house. True, dat. My college roommate and I had
three indoor cats, and one summer they all became so infested we had to
bomb the house... Twice. (Interesting side-note: a flea can't
live/reproduce off human blood)

I have 12 cats and use Revolution on them. I don't put it on all of them
at once- I stagger it and put it on two this week, two next week, etc.
That seems to keep the fleas at bay. I'd also like to address Natalie's
vet- I used to work for a vet (and at an animal shelter) and have seen
numerous cats go into seizures and die from Frontline and Advantage, but
never Revolution. Doesn't mean that it doesn't happen, I've just never
seen or heard of it (and I know a lot of Crazy Cat People! haha).

I'm not quite sure what Advantage does - you could look up each product
and see their specifications.
I just sent some suggestions to group; some we have used and are using,
and some that I am considering, although what we have right now really
works well on all the cats and the doggie. Although our cats don't go
outside, they use the outdoor enclosures, thereby possible being exposed
to fleas.

I just let the hot water run until it is hot enough to warm up the food so it
smells good and they come running. I only give each one about 1 teaspoon
because they prefe the liquid to the actual meat. They will come back later
and nibble at the meat, but the liquid dissappears real fast.

Re: [Felvtalk] Question re positives negatives

2011-04-18 Thread POTT, BEVERLY
I had a cat with FELV that lived to be 17. I never separated him from my
other cats, they ate out of the same bowls, etc., and none of them ever
contracted the disease. The other ones were vaccinated against it. I've
also had 2 other positives living with my negative cats (one lived to be
4, the other 8), and none of my other cats ever contracted it.

My brother, too, had a positive cat that lived to be 17- and he, too,
never separated his cats out. None of his other cats (vaccinated) ever
contracted Feleuk. Just sayin'.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Question re positives negatives

I am trying to determine what to do with Poppy both now when the IFA
test results come in. I've been reading reading from what I can
gather, the old dictums about NEVER havinig positive negative cats
even in the same house has been abandoned. From what I have read, the
general sense is that it's fine for positives negatives to be in the
same home, but should be separate so there is no chance of exchanging
fluids such as with a bite, but more importantly with mutual grooming.

But I know also that some of you have both positives negatives really
living together, not separate. Right?

What about if I put Poppy in her condo in the spare bedroom let me
cats visit, so at least she SEES other cats. What is she hisses
spits? Would that have a chance of infecting any of mine who were
nosing around her condo? My feeling is that it would.

Also how effective is the vaccine these days? I know that some years
ago the figure was about 30% so I never had any of my cats vaccinated.

Has it been improved?

Right now we are still waiting for the IFA test for Poppy. And I guess
she needs retesting on that in at least a month. I do NOT want to keep
her alone until then. We have a sanctuary for her if she tests IFA
positive cause then we know that she is really positive. But the person
who runs it tells me that regardless of how she tests on the IFA, she
HAS leukemia. Period. And would go in with the positive cats. But my
understanding is that if she is IFA negative, she has a chance of
fighting it off putting her in with the positives is giving up. I
think she should only go in with the positives if she tests IFA
positive.

Can anyone help me sort this out?

My housemate and I were faced with such a decision 10 or 11 years ago,
when we moved from our separate apartments to our formerly-two-flat
house, and melded our cat families. She had two, an elderly lady named
Kitty and a pugnacious orange boy named Tribble. I had 3 -- my laid-back
Luc, my introverted fluffy tortie Phoebe, and my mom's black girly,
Missy. Tribble had always deferred to Kitty when they lived together,
and continued to do so, thank goodness. But as time went on and our cat
population changed a little, Tribble showed quite a bit of aggression,
and we had to take somebody or other to the vet to have bites treated at
least twice. So we were in a real bind, since we are both
cats-are-family-for-life people, and we did love Tribble with all his
peculiarities. We knew nobody would adopt him anyway. We are both
anti-declaw and had the raggedy furniture to prove it, but we decided
that for the safety of the other cats we would have him declawed,
feeling maybe he would lose some aggressiveness, and also that he might
still be able to bite, but he wouldn't be able to dig in and hold on
while he did so. We found the one place in town at the time that did the
laser technique.

We were worried about all the things mentioned -- the pain, the litter
problems, the behavioral problems. But he really seemed not to mind,
even during the first days. He was fine with the litterbox, and didn't
develop any behavioral problems above and beyond the ones he had going
in. He was still aggressive, but wasn't able to inflict nearly the
damage, which was mission accomplished as far as we were concerned. The
upside for him is that to this day he still tries to sharpen those claws
on furniture, wicker etc., and he's the only one that doesn't get shooed
away. I know we got lucky here, and that most cats suffer more, but if
we had it to do again we'd still make the same decision under the same
circumstances. It was either that or sentence Tribble to almost certain
death.

Yes, the number one cause of bird extinction is habitat loss, but cats are #2.
There's a well-known study that was conducted on a couple of adjacent beaches
in California, one with a feral cat population and one without. The beach that
is home to feral cats has no birds - remember that most shorebirds are ground
nesters - while the cat-free beach supports a healthy bird population.
Of course, our birds have natural predators - some raptors such as red-tailed
hawks prey mostly on birds. Kingsnakes and rat snakes are known for feasting on
eggs and hatchlings. But this is natural predation so things are kept in
balance. Throw in a highly efficient predator such as a cat and the balance
changes.

That's horrible, and many people do not realize what it entails and how many
cats lose their lives - they think it's a manicure...but many vets are to
blame. Several people told me that after adopting from us, they went to
their own vet, and after telling them that the cats will be kept indoors
only, the vets said Oh, you have an option to declaw! Banfield Health.
The group at Petsmart, offers a big special for kitten health - all the
vaccines, exams, and declawing for a very good price! I wrote to them about
declawing; they wrote back with the most ridiculous comments. If anyone
would like to see their reply, I'll send it privately. Last year, I was
informed that they will no longer cut ears and tails on dogs, because it's
purely cosmetic...I wrote to them, asking their policy on declawing since
they have made that big leap on no longer mutilating dogs, they might have
reconsidered doing it to cats...no reply from them.
O always ask people what they would prefer, a few things scratched up or
urine-soaked carpets and furniture.Besides, not all cats grow up to be
scratchers...and providing good posts and trimming their nails works well.

See if your vet will give you an ace promazine (or something similar) to give

An acquaintance in rescue put me in touch with a person whose dying relative
has a supposed double positive- FeLV and FIV.  She can't take him because of
the amount of other pets the relative has and will add to her own bunch.  We've
had a few conversations.  I have been told the following: the kitty hasn't seen
a vet in 2 yrs, hasn't had a check up in over 4, has always been very thin,
gets overstimulated, masturbates on his bed (I mention because to me it's
behavioral/lonely/frustrated); has escaped from the room he's in and never
attacks the other cats.  The kitty is around 5 or 6 and has been in supposed
perfect health.  There's never been an IFA or Western Blot.

I don't feel comfortable bringing a kitty in without some knowledge of their
health - I offered to pay for a check up and IFA, and said we could certainly
use their vet.  She mentioned she no longer goes to that vet and didn't know
'who we could use' but knows some 'dr who can draw blood'. Today she said she
doesn't want to make that dr mad (?) and wants her permission to do the IFA . I
offered to send a home visit vet, but she 'doesn't know'.  It's not a problem
with this home, because I am invited there.

When I offered to take the kitty to a vet myself she said he doesn't like
carriers and might need a shot to be sedated.  That wasn't mentioned the first
few conversations.

Stating the obvious, this is not making sense to me.  I know this person is
overwhelmed with alot of big life issues, and I can appreciate that. BUT.  I am
going to meet this kitty to see how I can help/what the situation is, but why
would someone resist this chance for care, even if it doesn't lead to an
adoption?  She did agree it's possible he'd come up negative, but doesn't know
about doing this.

I did meet another kitty I know I want to adopt but these illogical
conversations and this cat have been weighing on my mind and I feel I need to
see what's going on.  I got the impression there was a problem with the vet she
originally used, like she can't go back. Most people this deep into rescue have
a vet or two they know and useso, what is the real story?  How can I best
help...

Thanks, I really appreciate any opinions or guidance from all your varied
experience.

[Felvtalk] Jersey City NJ: FELV+ Gino needs a home

2010-12-27 Thread Beverly Parsons
JerseyCats, a volunteer-run, foster-based rescue in Northern New Jersey is
still looking for a home for Gino, a two year old FELV+ cat.

Please read more about Gino on our home page: www.jerseycats.org or on
petfinder: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17695711.

Gino is gorgeous and lovable, and gets along with dogs! Because he is now a
full fledged house cat and is asymptomatic (recent blood work was perfect) we
are hoping to find a home rather than a sanctuary. Second Chance Meows in
Nevada generously offered to take Gino, but the cost was just too prohibitive
for our very new rescue, and in any case we felt the funds spent on transport
would be better spend on medical care for Gino when he needs it. It would have
also been a very long and stressful journey for Gino.

And so we hope we may find someone on this list who is closer to us who will
consider taking Gino into their home. We are happy to transport to locations
within driving distance, and will continue to offer support to any adopter.

Do you have room in your home and heart for this gorgeous boy? He will reward
you with full throated purrs and endless head butts.

Please contact me with any questions.

many thanks,

Re: [Felvtalk] how to know if your only needs a friend?

2010-12-15 Thread Beverly Parsons
Hi Bonnie,

I must beg to differ that most cats prefer to be the only! I have five male
cats (aged fifteen years to six months) in our small apartment and they are all
best buds. They rumble and tumble and play, and curl up and sleep together
when they get tired. I don't think any of them would do well as an only cat.
Most of my friends and family also have multiple cats that are great friends.

It's all about the introduction - a slow, careful introduction of a new cat to
the resident cats can lead to a very happy relationship.

Just my two cents.

I agree about the intro, and I've tried to do it right with everyone. The

there are tensions, especially between Stormy and the other girl, Miya Chan

accepting. I would love to see everyone curled up together on the couch or
my bed, or playing together. Sigh.

 Hi Bonnie,

I must beg to differ that most cats prefer to be the only! I have five male
cats (aged fifteen years to six months) in our small apartment and they are
all best buds. They rumble and tumble and play, and curl up and sleep
together when they get tired. I don't think any of them would do well as an
only cat. Most of my friends and family also have multiple cats that are
 great friends.

It's all about the introduction - a slow, careful introduction of a new cat
to the resident cats can lead to a very happy relationship.

 Just my two cents.

Anndrea- try some Stage One baby foods (beef, chicken, ham, etc.) that just
have meat in them- I mix a 3 ounce jar with 3 ounces of hot tap water, mix it
up well, and they will lap it up. And with the canned food, try mixing it with
hot water also. Mash it up good, so that it's all liquid. She may just not
feel like chewing. I feel like that sometimes :-)

Subject: [Felvtalk] Questions about FeLV

Hi, my cat was the picture of health about two weeks ago. She’s 2 years old,
female, spayed, orange tabby. She would literally bounce off the walls running
around the house. She’s so wonderful ♥

Anyway, about two weeks ago, she started sleeping constantly, and one day
(9/17) I noticed her nose, gums, and pads had turned white…instead of their
normal pink. So I took her in and they took some blood…said that day that she
is VERY anemic L Since that was a Friday, we got the results the following
Monday. FeLV L She barely eats, almost never uses the litter box (and her urine
is pretty dark when she does go), sleeps almost 24 hours a day, and has lost a
bit of weight (not good when she only started at 7lbs in the first place L).

I got her Pet-tinic vitamins cuz a vet suggested them. I tried to get her to
drink kitten formula cuz I figured part of it’s job is to help kittens build up
their immune systems. She was put on antibiotics the Monday that her tests came
back. After 4-5 days, she began refusing the medicine. It’s a liquid and she
would spit it all back out. So, she probably didn’t get all she was supposed
to.

When she does eat, it is usually just the liquid part of canned cat food.
She is still able to jump off the bed and walk to the kitchen (where the dry
food bowl and litter box are), but usually wears out on her way back out of the
kitchen, and lays down. She is so skinny…I’m not even sure she has much muscle
left. She has always been skinny, but not like this.

Well, a few days ago, her white pads and nose started turning yellow. I know
that has something to do with her liver not working right.

Oh yeah…the way the vet put her anemia…normal range is 29%-45% (or something
like that), and my kitty’s came back at 16% L

Does anyone have any advice as to what we could do to help her? How will we
know if she has pain?

The vet that gave us the results (a substitute cuz regular vet was out for the
week) said if she makes it the next couple months, and seems any better, to get
her re-tested. That some cats fight it off and can test negative a couple
months later. So, that means SOME cats get over this. And I read online that
some cats live for a few years with it, after showing symptoms. Just gives me a
little hope…then I look at her…and she looks so bad…and I think there isn’t
much hope. So hard to watch.

At what point do you give up and have an FeLV+ cat put to sleep? I figured if
she shows signs of being in pain (once I know what those are), or has a
seizure, or absolutely stops eating and drinking anything, that it would be
time. I don’t want her to suffer, but I also want to give her every chance to
survive…ya know?

Anyway, thanks for letting me go on and on…as you can tell this is really very
hard on me emotionally, as I’m sure it is on anyone and everyone who has to
deal with it.

OK, this doesn't have anything to do with FeLV, so I apologize.but a few
incidents happened at the shelter today that really made me angry, and really
made me sick of the way animals are treated in our society - as disposable
property, with no feelings, no thoughts, no value. An inconvenience, to be
tossed aside when necessary.
First, a woman called and said that there was a cat lying in her carport that
must have been hit by a car. She said, We're afraid she's going to die there,
and she can't seem to move her back legs. Stray, injured catI called our
animal control officer and she headed on out to pick the cat up. Turns out, it
was the woman's cat, and not a stray, she even saw the cat get hit! - same old
story, the owner doesn't want to deal with the problem, doesn't want a vet
bill, so she calls the county to handle it, forgets about it and goes about her
day. My officer told her, This is your responsibility, not mine - you get that
cat to a vet. Later on, the caller once again rang up animal control: If I
have a cat that's been hit by a car, can I bring her to you? NO, lady, what
don't you understand - this is your animal, she is your responsibility, TAKE
HER TO THE VET.
Then, later, the door opened and a young woman came in with a cat in a crate.
He has serious health problems; he's old and has some sort of issues with his
teeth, he's in a lot of pain and needs steroid injections and some other stuff.
I remember speaking with her two months ago about the cat, gave her some phone
numbers of vets who might be willing to work with her on the cost of treatment.
Anyway, she wanted to drop him off so we could euthanize him on Tuesday. I
tried to get her to take the cat to her own vet, tried to get her to understand
that it would be inhumane and cruel to leave him in a place with strangers, to
sit in a cold metal cage, to die on a table and be tossed in a black trash bag
and thrown into the dump like garbage. Naturally, she had no money - but if
you're a good client, chances are your vet will euthanize for free or next to
nothing; my vet has never charged me to euthanize an animal. And she had months
to prepare for this, but
she's moving in with her parents tomorrow and they're allergic, and of course,
like the other person, she didn't want to deal with it. Finally she said to me,
I'm leaving. I don't like your attitude. Bitch. I wanted so badly to follow
her out the door, slap her face tell her what I thought of her, but I need my
job.
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but still, it appears that this
attitude has become more and more prevalent. Those of you who work in shelters
or who are involved with rescue know exactly what I'm talking about. Someone
will always be there to pick up the pieces and clean up after your mistakes, so
why even try to do the responsible thing? One resident surrendered 4 kittens
last week and called today to ask if they'd been adopted. They had all gone out
to a rescue. After hollering, Praise Jesus! They're safe! she asked me, So,
the next time I have kittens, should I call this rescue directly or do I have
to go through you? Aaaargh! Don't let them be born! Come here on euthanasia
day and then ask yourself if you should be producing more kittens!
Thanks for letting me vent.

she may have hemobartonella. A test confirmed this, and she was put on

didn't want to be bothered with her- she was going to be put to sleep if no one

house. She got around fine and none of my other cats bothered her (well, my 16
year old cat Pokey would hiss at her. Of course, Smudge couldn't hear her
hissing, haha). They usually moved out of the way when they saw her coming. She
learned where the beds were and made herself right at home.

Subject: [Felvtalk] OT: blind deaf cat

I just took in a blind-deaf cat, was one of 25 or so in a lady's
house. The lady became disabled, developed dementia, and our rescue
took some of her cats. This one first was taken to the city animal
services, developed a URI, got about over it, was altered, tested and
shots, and we pulled him.

He (?) was transferred to a different cage, then to my carrier, then
to my home and a large cage. He's not too friendly, although I can
at times pet him on the head and scratch his ears. We think it's just
because of the changes in his life, that he just doesn't know what's
going on and if he needs to defend himself. I haven't had a blind or
deaf cat before.

Does anyone know of a rescue that will take a blind-deaf cat? I found
one in North Carolina, but I'm in Arkansas.

Thanks very much,

Gloria

Hi, I haven't posted anything yet, just keeping up with the list.

I saw this posting on craigslist for a FeLV positive cat needing a home.
I
don't work for the rescue or anything and I can't take in another cat. I
just thought it was worth a shot to post it on here. I know you all care

Thank-you to all who responded. GREAT help! I loved the KY vet link and the
thoughts about a holistic remedy to be used if vaccinating. I talked to my
vet and he does have the purevax. He prefers the 3 year adjuvanted rabies
but will use the purevax. He also has the internasal distemper. He said it
is up to me what we do. He also mentioned, as did several people here, that
the law and vet hospitalization require rabies. My dilemma there is, if they
are sick enough to be hospitalized, they will be too sick to be vaccinated
if they are not already vaccinated. My vet recommends agst titer testing. He
said it is not accurate. Another vet did do titer testing on Frankie and
found he was still covered for some of the distemper diseases but not all.
We have had bats in the house twice. That is probably my biggest worry. I do
think the entries have all been closed but we do live in the woods and they
like to sleep behind our shutters.
I am still undecided about the vaccines, but I am better informed~
Thank-you!
Laurie and tribe

As a matter of fact, I have!
I worried that it might attract MORE bats.not sure what the outcome
would be.
I do love bats and, of course, let the last one out (my cats killed the
first one and I only found body parts). Because the second one was in
the
bedroom area, we all had to have the rabies series of shots! There was a
presumption we'd been bitten. If there is a next time I won't tell

We are so grateful that our one cat who needs meds, Luc, is very
mild-mannered. We can drop a pill down his throat with no trouble. In
contrast, we are hoping that one of our other cats, Tribble, never gets
sick. He has been a hellion since the day he was born (we suspect his
brain
consists of noodles and ninja stars) and will turn a cuddling session
into
carnage at a split second's notice. We tell him, You better never need
life-saving pills, cuz, Dude, if you do...it was nice knowing you. (I
suspect that if he ever does need meds we'll be praying for a
transdermal
option.) On the other hand, we've had to assist-feed Luc here and there
and
he is not a happy camper and has lots and lots and lots of claws.

I had to make that last vet trip with my dear sweet Mattie today. She
lost the use of her back legs last week due to neurological issues from
the FeLV. The paralysis spread and she had lost bladder and bowel
control. She was still eating and grooming herself but I couldn't wait
until she was suffering. She deserved better than that. She fell
asleep in my arms from the sedative and never felt the 2nd shot.

Even though blind since birth she was the most inquisitive kitten I've
ever had. No challenge was too great for her. She is the last of a
litter of 4 positive babies I rescued last summer. What amazes me is
that their mom and 3 aunts, all positives and now spayed, are still
doing fine.

All I can say is Mattie had a wonderful 12 months wanting for nothing
and teaching me so much. I learned not to let a handicap limit me. It
sure didn't limit her love of life. She is now at the Rainbow Bridge
with Bright Eyes, Houdini, and CJ.

Re: [Felvtalk] Difficult decision

2009-08-14 Thread POTT, BEVERLY
Yes, my vet gives me the ace whenever it's that time...

Before, I have had a few who would really perk up on the way to the
vet's office, as if to say, I'm not sick, look at me! I can run circles
around you! And THAT makes it really hard! My cat Benjamin (FeLeuk+)
had been going slowly downhill for a couple of years (we think he was
about 17 at the end)- and it had gotten to the point where he couldn't
make it to the litter box anymore and was very weak. So we cried and
drove down to the vet's office, and he started acting like a kitten
again. We turned around and brought him back home, where he scampered
all over the house, played with toys, had an appetite again, etc.
Several days later, though, he was back where he started, and we took
him to the vet's again. Again he perked up in the car, but we knew it
was time. :-( That was really hard.

Yes, watching them struggle or gasp for breath is just unbearable.
I've used Klonopin to ease the fear or struggle when a cat is dying.
It really helps and it is used for cats because I checked with my
vet. It's like Valium. Have any of you used this for dying cats?
I have a prescription for myself, so I always have it on hand. Ace
promazine would have to be gotten from a vet wouldn't it??

We all hope our furry ones will died peacefully at home, preferably
in their sleep, but as you said, it seldom happens that way. Same for
people. We all hope to die peacefully at home.

Re: [Felvtalk] Difficult decision

2009-08-13 Thread POTT, BEVERLY
I have given cats ace promazine in situations like that, before I take
them to the vet to be put to sleep. That way, they aren't stressed out
from going there, and don't end up wasting away for days or weeks on
end. I've often wished that a cat would pass away in his/ her sleep, so
that I wouldn't have to take them in (of course that never happens), but
it's just too painful to watch them gasping for breath, or trying to
walk and falling down, etc. Just my personal opinion...

Subject: [Felvtalk] Difficult decision

Dear Friends, I have a difficult decision to make, and I hope you
can help... I have several FelV cats at a shelter I have in
town. Most remain in good health by all appearances, however one 8
year old female has been steadily losing weight, she is now very
anemic; extremely emaciatedm and she stopped eating two days ago. She
will still lick a bit of baby food from my fingers, and she is still
drinking water, but this is all. I know she is probably going to die
soon, but I want her to die in familiar surroundings where she is
loved, rather than having to make a trip to the vet which is always
terrifying for cats. The vets here will not come out to see or
euthanize a sick cat.

This cat does not appear to be in any pain. She has no tumors, nor
neurogical symptoms, but I know she will soon die from the anemia.
I do not believe in extending the life of a cat who has a terminal
illness, therefore I will not put her through transfusions or heroic
measures. If I had a terminal illness I would not wish this for
myself!

What I'm asking is this I'm sure some of you have had anemic
FelV cats and I want to know if dying from anemia is painful. If so
I will have her put to sleep. Even though I know the trip to the vet
will be frightening for her... I do not want her to suffer.

Thank you for your help,

Lorrie
