Re: [Felvtalk] Helping kitty with extreme congestion
I PUT MY GIRLS AND BOY ON A GRAIN FREE DIET BECAUSE 2 OR 3 OF THEM WERE VOMITING SHORTLY AFTER EATING AND THEY ALSO DEVELOPED DIARRHEA . I WENT FROM HILL'S SCIENCE DIET TO BLUE BUFFALO DUCK WHICH THEY ALL LOVE. THEY AHVE THEIR OWN SOURCES OF MEAT SO THEY DON'T GET ANY BAD FILLERS FROM CHINA OR WHEREVER. I ALSO FOUND A TRET MADE FOR DOGS. MY VET SAID IT IS OKAY FOR THE CATS AS IT ONLY HAS DUCK, GLYCERIN AND WATER IN IT. WE REALLY LIKE THIS. I DO HAVE TO CUT IT UP FOR THEM AS IT COMES IN LONG STRIPS, BUT IS IS WORTH IT. ALL THE OTHER TREATS HAVE FISH IN THEY AND WE FOUND THAT FISH PRODUCTS CAN AID IN THE FORMATION OF STRUVITE CRYSTALS. JUST WENT THRU THAT WITH HOMEY AND DON'T CARE TO REPEAT IT AGAIN. SHE WOULD NOT EAT ANY OF THE SPECIAL FOODS TO REDUCE THE CRYSTALS AND SHE WAS IN A BAD WAY. GOT AN CHINESE HERBAL THING FROM NATURE ONLY AND SHE CLEARED UP RIGHT AWAY. IT IS A SMALL, ROUND, SMOOTH PILL THAT SHE CAN'T WORK BACK UP AND SPIT OUT. I'd also like to put in a plug for Zithromax and Convenia. Zithromax - I buy it dry, divide it into 3rds, and mix a 3rd at a time. Sometimes 1 day 1 dose will do the trick, especially for kittens. We've also had miraculous results with Convenia too, but you get the vet to give an injection of that. Some vets aren't into these antibiotics - they just use the same old stuff - Amoxi, Clavamox, Clindamycin, which are good - but the newer ones can be extremely helpful. You can also use Little Noses 4 hour drops (the nose drops, not the saline) - I'm trying to remember the name of the other drops I've used, can't recall it. But only the 4 hour ones. I've put on a q-tip and squished against the nose, and can be helpful. Anybody else know about nose drops? Maybe some of the messages I haven't read yet. If the cause of the congestion is related to Herpes, of course, you'd want to use Lysine orally, which is otc. Not sure what the homeopathic remedy would be...hmmm. I've been using a humidifier in my house on cold nights, because of the dryness to noses. just wanted to say also, maybe you could call the front desk at your vet, and find out EXACTLY what meds were giving to your kitty... it's good to know that. Re: [Felvtalk] Helping kitty with extreme congestion
Hi Melinda, Have you ever tried to do any assisted feedings for your kitty? It's hard sometimes when they're not feeling well because they tend not to want to eat but you know they have to get some nutrition in them. I've done it for several cats and we are currently doing it for our kitty Eden because I feel like if we can just keep her eating and get her antibiotics in to her then she'll have a better chance of recovering. I don't believe in force feeding but it's been my experience that assisted feeding is pretty well accepted by the cats that I've done it with. What I do is take some canned food, mix in some liquid of some kind (either milk or kitten milk replacement) add a big glob of NutriCal and mix it all up so that it can be sucked up in a large syringe. Then I just feed the mixture to Eden with the syringe. At first she wasn't quite sure what I was doing but then she started just eating it as soon as it came out of the syringe. She's eating on her own too but I didn't feel like she was eating enough. I like to use NutriCal when they're really down because it's high calorie and loaded with nutrients so it can really help them keep their strength up and heal. You mentioned that you were having a hard time getting meds into your kitty because he's not all that interested in food so I just thought I'd mention the assisted feeding idea. It's worked well for us in the past and I hope it helps Eden get over her current problems. I hope your kitty feels better soon. He was given a shot last week, unfortunately I don't know what. He was given some powder to add to his food yesterday, but he isn't eating too much. I'm actually thinking it is a viral infection. Having a bit of trouble asking the vet about that one! His english isn't the best. I plan to check in after a couple of days if we can't beat it! If no nebulizer you cam do a humidifier or sit kitty in a carrier/ bathroom with hot steamy shower. Not as good as a nebulizer but it's been suggested to me before.
