Re: [Felvtalk] Holistic vs traditional vets for felv

2014-03-15 Thread Kelley
Sometimes we get enough in donations to cover food and litter for several
months. If not I have to cover it out of pocket which is where things get
dicey. When possible I feed diamond indoor hair ball control kibble which is
at least corn and wheat free. I know the first thing this vet is going to want
to do is put them on raw which can be cheaper but that's after I buy a meat
grinder. The diamond kibble is $125 a month for all cats. Otherwise they get
what I can afford. Rehoming is a possibility but I'd like at this point to
continue to raise funds and see how that works out.

I've been on this list for many years - had a false alarm scare with a kitten 8
years ago or so. Was hoping to never really need it though.

Kelley, I can certainly understand your dilema. Some FelV cats never
get sick, but if they do you will have a lot of veterinary expense.
Our lost cost clinic isn't cheap either, and if you are struggling
just to buy cat food and litter I hope you can rehome the FelV cats.

Yes the interest is terrible if you don't pay the loan off during
the alloted interest free time. I just paid off my daughters $930.
Care Credit account to keep her from having to pay that interest.
She has 20 rescued cats.

And thanks for sharing. I'm working on a fb page for them now. Hopefully I can
raise enough money for the supplements and stuff I know the holistic vet will
recommend and some extra for emergencies, cancer tx if necessary, etc

2014-03-15 Thread Kelley
Yes that was just for whoever said the interest rate was low. It is not. But
they do have a 6 month interest free option.

Thanks to a donation I almost have enough to take one of them to the vet. It is
35 dollars for the holistic vet with a discount on Wednesdays.

I'm feeling better since I got the donation and am thinking of making a
Facebook page for the kitties - what do y'all think?

I used to have care credit before I had to declare bk after I became disabled
and went on social security disability. My vet takes it with a minimum charge
of $200. Seriously doubt they will approve me again and if they did I'd just
be digging a deeper hole.

2014-03-14 Thread lernermichelle
Have you looked into Care Credit? It's very low or no interest and is only for
vet and medical expenses. Some vets take it.

Not that I think a visit to a holistic vet is necessarily necessary. People
have had mixed experiences with them.

I had 6 FeLV+ cats. One, who was also FIV+, lived to about 9 years old. Most of
the others lived to about 5. One died at 18 months. You definitely need to take
as good care of them as possible, get problems treated quickly, and try to keep
their lives stress-free, but beyond that I think, to some extent, that it is a
crap shoot..

My FeLeuk girl sees an integrative vet, who practices both
holistic and traditional medicine. She gets bicom treatments

from her, as well as various holistic medicines. She is stable
and even gaining weight on this regimen. I think this is
better care for her than she would get from a traditional
vet.

Just my experience...
