[Felvtalk] Stanley and Interferon Question

2010-03-16 Thread Diane Tyler
Hello again,

Stanley has suddenly taken a turn for the worse. In the last two weeks, he
has gotten very lethargic and not eaten well. We've taken two sets of
x-rays: the first showed all his organs well, then the second two weeks
later his organs weren't even visible because of all the fluid buildup in
his belly. We have him on buprenorphine, prednisolone, and appetite
stimulant. He doesn't have anemia yet and has a low grade fever of 103.. He
is responding to the medication as well as could be expected, I suppose. The
fluid in his belly has also seemed to stabilize a bit since he had the last
xray this past Monday. He actually does eat some--he likes his treats and
I'm going to make him the liver shake to see if he'll eat that.

I have a few questions I'd like to get some opinions on. I have some alpha
interferon and was wondering if it was too late to try some of that and, if
so, what dosage should I give him? The second is should I have the fluid
removed from his belly? I think he'd be more comfortable, although I'm sure
the procedure is probably painful. Can he be anesthesized for that procedure
and is it worth putting him through the pain?

Thanks for some opinions.

Diane

many vets think that all cats should be on lysine all the time, symptomatic
or not, to prevent the spread and outbreaks of herpes. i wouldn't bother
worrying about that one!

and just because MOST cats might not react to any particular drug, it
doesn't mean that yours isn't doing so--if this continues with him getting
sluggish and sickly each time with the protocol he's on, you might need to
remind your vet about that fact MOST cats don't have vaccine reactions,
or topical-flea-product reactions, or or or

Hey Sidney and The General,

There are different protocols for low dose oral (not injected)
interferon alpha, none of which has been
proven that I know of. One is 3 days on and 3 off. Another is 7 on,
7 off. Another is daily.

Vets of course are very individual in their attitude and treatment of
FELV cats.

I've done daily most of the time - but I only give 1/2 to 1cc. I'm
wondering how much you're giving?

Hope this helps -

Re: [Felvtalk] Interferon Question-Jane,Lynne

2008-08-22 Thread Lynne
I'm convinced that cats that have this disease are very special little
creatures. I no longer have a positive cat but the girl we have now was a
rescued cat, seized from this horrible pet store owner. She was lucky in
the sense that she was taken in by a rescue group and spent 2 months being
rehabilitated. I understand the diagnosis was feline herpes virus. You'd
never know she had been so close to death now. The only reminder of her
illness is a scar on her one eye. She's a persian and the most loving cat
we've owned. She comes to bed with me every night but won't go to sleep
until Bob comes up to tell her how beautiful she is. She is just so
endearing and so smart, very clingy, not like the boys we've had in the past
who were a little more independent.

When we lost BooBoo the vet introduced us to another positive cat "Baby"
whose owners were not certain they wanted her after learning about her
disease. We were ready to take her home but the owners had a change of
heart, which is good. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to take on another. I
learned a lot from BooBoo as hopeless as his case was and now just losing
Lennie, I realize that both Bob and I are quite capable of handling all the
sorrow that eventually goes along with owning cats but am reassured that we
do the best we can for them and in the end it enriches all of our lives.

2008-08-22 Thread Jane Lyons
That's a good question Lynne ...I don't know and my vet is learning
from the information
that Gloria sent to me, via Tally.
I became interested when I read that paper published by the French
veterinarians that stated
that interferon was the only treatment that they thought improved the
quality and longevity
of Felv kitties. I had been considering Imulan, but El has been using
it and the last time she posted,
she was not quite sure about it.
MeMe is probably 2, possibly 2.5 and I was hoping if we could keep
building her immunity
she might make it through that difficult 2.5 to 3 stage.

She is the funniest cat. We have two Scotties and when I walk them
she insists on going. She walks
ahead of them (with her cat jacket on) on a leash with her tail
straight up. It's difficult to juggle three
leash handles, but they all are on retractable leads, which means
that MeMe climbs a few trees ever
now and then. From what I've read on the list, it seems that FeLV
kittens are the most endearing.
I know MeMe is.

take care
Jane

Re: [Felvtalk] Interferon question

2008-08-22 Thread Gloria B. Lane
My regular vet, who I initially got it from, charged something like
that. Then I started getting it compounded at a compounding
pharmacy, and chicken flavored. Then I shopped around for cheaper
price, asked a few people ha! Got it cheaper with a rescue friendly vet.

I think what I use is 30 units daily. Mine has no flavoring, but
marshmallow sounds fine to me!

I started getting mine from a very rescue friendly vet who charges
$15 - gives me about a 90 day supply. If you call around, or ask
rescue people, you might find a cheaper price.

Re: [Felvtalk] Interferon Question

2008-08-22 Thread jbutler5758
We've been using interferon with our two FeLV positive kitties for over a year
now. Our vet said I could give it by mixing it into food, but usually we
administer the required dosage in a needless syringe and the kitties just
swallow it. (I want to be sure they get all their dose.) So far, both cats
are doing well. Bo is almost four now, and Seven is just over a year old.

I don't think I have the list that Gloria sent to you, Jane, but I would be
very interested in reading it and learning any more that I can.

Good luck!

Re: [Felvtalk] Interferon question

2008-08-22 Thread Lynne
I didn't realize Interferon could be given orally. The interferon we had
for BooBoo was given subcutaneously. My vet called into my pharmacy and
they got it for me. As I remember it was a lot less expensive than I
thought it would be and the amount we got would have lasted a lot longer
than Boo would. As it was he only had 2 doses and died. We were fortunate
to be able to give the rest of it to two cats that were Felv positive at the
Clinic and were not anywhere near ill like our baby.

You probably want to be giving 30 IU not 30 ml. Interferon is usually dosed
down to 30 IU per ml. You would give 1 ml a day. $70 is a lot for a 30 day
supply.

Re: [Felvtalk] Interferon question

2008-08-22 Thread Jane Lyons
They gave me a choice of flavors, so I am hoping marshmallow will do
it. Her mouth is inflamed
so it is difficult to open it to squirt something in.
The lab my vet used is charging 70.00 for a 30 day supply. (25.00 of
that is overnight frio packing)
Does that seem right to you? I'm doing 30 (ml) daily?
I'll do anything if it enhances the quality of her live. I hope she
responds to it.
It is great that it helped your kitties mouth. I 'm encouraged.

thanks for your help Gloria

Well the "rumor" I recall is that it is absorbed in the back of the
throat, so if you give it alone it heightens the possibility of that
happening. I don't have any sources to document it, however, and it
may or may not be true. But I always give it with a syringe not

[Felvtalk] Interferon question

2008-08-22 Thread Jane Lyons
Gloria (thank you) sent me some great information about Interferon
that someone
called Tally put together for this list a few years ago.
My vet has read it and is learning from Tally and any information I
can give her.

Is anyone using it now? The instructions are contradictory. One piece
is that it
cannot be given with food, while another suggests giving it with tuna
juice.
Since I cannot ask my vet, I am hoping someone out there is using it.

I just received it and if I can figure out the correct method, will
begin tonight.

Re: Interferon Question

2007-11-15 Thread Gloria Lane
I'm so glad your Dixie is doing well!! I haven't read about it, but
in my experience when I have gotten young FELV cats/kittens, they tend
to decline and die at age 2.5 to 3 yrs old. If I get another one that
young, I intend to put it on daily interferon and see if we can make
it thru that stage! I do know someone who has had their FELV cat thru
the age of 3 - has had her on daily interferon. Kitty does great, is
probably 5 or 6 now...?

I have one FEV cat now that's just made it past 3 - name is BB. I
acquired him recently, when he was about 4. He's healthy and happy.
I have two others that are over 10, but that's a different story :)

I don't know what it is about that age - whether it's the type of FELV
that they have or what.

Hi Gary,

Never heard of that for interferon alpha. LIke Lance said, maybe
it's for VO.

I can't see the harm for a diabetic cat. But my experience with
FELV cats is that they can look so great, then turn symptomatic, and
in my experience theres not much that can be done when they're
symptomatic, at least for the young ones that I've had. So I'd
probably try it out. I remember when I got Calawalla Banana and she
was about 6 months to a year. She looked so healthy and hearty.
Then at 2.5 yr she developed lymphoma and nothing we did would touch
it. I'd wished I'd had her on interferon prior to her being
symptomatic.

(The interferon alpha protocol I use is a daily dose - not the on
and off.)

On the other hand, I now have 2 FELV cats that are over 10, and 1
that's 4-5. Go figure. They were over the magic age of 3 when I got
them, so it's nothing I've done that's kept them going...

Good luck,

Gloria

I have a feline interferon question. If you don't know the
answer, would you mind asking the group? I followed the
prophylactic regimen recommended in studies for asymptomatic felv+
cats, which is every day for five days in three runs starting the
1st, 14th, and 60th days. This regimen in studies seems to double
cats' chances of being alive a year later. I gave it to Patches
this past February. I have another batch of feline interferon and
am wondering when to give it to her again. None of the studies I
have say anything about repeating it, or when to do so. Do you
know? Also, I can't find anything on whether it is ok to give to
diabetic cats. Any idea?

Re: Interferon Question

2007-11-14 Thread Jane Lyons

Hi
I know that Hideyo (who was on this list) has used VO successfully.
There are people here who are in touch with her. Maybe she would be

willing to post her experience with it.

Jane
ps.
I haven't used VO. With the exception of Giardia, I have been able to
get rid of all of the many FeLK symptoms we were dealt. I cannot believe
I now have a cat who has a great appetite and will eat several cans
of Petguard (the Whole Foods brand) a day. We had gotten rid of the
Giardia, but the diarrhea returned, so we have tried a stronger
remedy. Fingers are tightly crossed as I type this, but MeMe is
leading an almost

normal, happy life.

I believe this person is referring to feline recombinant
interferon. That looks like the protocol that is recommended for
treating FeLV+ with Virbagen Omega. I'm wrestling with similar
concerns, but we haven't even tried the stuff yet. Ember is in good
shape right now, and I worry that giving her the VO might rock the
boat. I'll have to figure it out in the next few months, as it
expires in June or July, I think.

*WARNING THIS IS NOT A VET'S OPINION!!!*

I think I'd hold off on giving the stuff until at least a year from
the prior dose (ie February). Were I in this person's shoes, I'd
probably just try to sell the VO to someone who needs it for a
symptomatic FeLV+ kitty. Sadly, we don't know enough about VO and
how well it treats the virus.

*WARNING THIS WAS NOT A VET'S OPINION!!!*

I really need to get in touch with a European vet to see what
they're doing over there. Very few folks in the States seem to have
experience with VO.

Hopefully, something in my response was at least vaguely helpful.

Yes - I need to know more about the details of his conditions and
findings -and how old the kitty is to be able to answer the
effectiveness of FOI.

But either way, I would recommend that she tries. Yes Abbeyvet is the
one - have her vet order from them. I just got my order in today from
them.

Kerry, have her contact me off list if you like, I will be happy to talk
to her as I do have tons of experience in FIP and FOI unfortunately.

Dear Jen,

No she needs to contact us direct. We need to send her a proper

quotation to include the cost of shipping etc.

A New client form and data sheet on the product are attached for your

and advise how many packs of which strength are required. We will then

prepare a quotation to include all the relevant charges etc.

We trust this is helpful and look forward to hearing further from you

Hi all

I've been away and offlist for 3 weeks.

My condolences to all those who may have lost a furbabe, and sending
good wishes and healing vibes for any and all sick kitties.

I had an urgent message last night from a rescuer in Chicago asking
about the effectiveness of feline interferon in dealing with FIP; one of
her own cats has just been diagnosed with FIP.

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of feline interferon helping a
cat with FIP?

She also wanted the contact details for obtaining the drug---can anyone
confirm if the Abbeyvet info below still holds good -- it's dated 2004.

any/all info appreciated!

Thanks, Kerry M.

Have her join the FIP list at
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/FIP/?yguid=11572739 But if the diagnosis is
correct, I'm afraid there is no good news nor much hope for recovery.

yes, FIV antibodies can be passed along in the milk, but she said her cat tested
positive at 9 MONTHS, any momma cat that would let a kitten nurse THAT long is a
brave and devoted soul, LOL! I think most maternal antibodies wear off by 6
months of
age (or a couple of months after the kitten last nursed).

It's possible she was never positive to begin with. Did you test more than
once, and using two different methods? Regardless, I may consider doing the
week on and week off schedule for a while, slowing stretching out the off
days by reducing the on days over a period of months. Of course, there's no
reason to take her off of it at all, there's no HARM in giving it long term
that I am aware of. It's possible her natural immunity finally kicked in now
that she is an adult.

Kittens, of course, can show a positive result for a while after nursing a
positive mama. But then at some point they throw off the antibodies. I've
thought that FIV+ kittens could go negative, as FELV+ kittens can.

Interesting - it's really good to hear news like this.
