Re: [Felvtalk] Just got FIV+ diagnosis
I'm so sorry, Natasha. I've had several double positives, and they have lived normal lives for a while, but getting sick with anything was taxing on them. I don't have any double positives right now...I think the first one I had was Mr. Black Kitty back in 2002 or 3, and I'm so glad I took him in. But I'd sure wait and see before assuming that your kitty has FELV also. The other thing - I think vets don't see healthy FIV and FELV cats as much as they see sick ones - makes sense. So they think of them as sick, when actually they can have some good healthy years. Natasha, I see no reason why you can't cut and paste Ben's test results. You may want to start a new message since there is a limit on the size of a message. Re: [Felvtalk] Just got FIV+ diagnosis
Has he had a CBC? He may need a transfusion if his hematocrit is too low. Using Prednisolone may help boost that as well. Talk to your Vet. My vet has gained experience with our cat & I can supply his name & number via email. Your Vet is welcome to comsult with him. Re: [Felvtalk] Just got FIV+ diagnosis
Hi, Natasha -- The great news is that once your kitty recovers from the toxo, the FIV diagnosis is NOT as dire as it sounds. Firstly, a cat can live a long happy life with FIV, and not exhibit a single symptom. The FeLV, if Ben does have it, is likely to be the bigger problem. They are both immune-deficiency diseases, and the treatment for both, such as it is, is the same: best possible food, some supplements, as little stress in their lives as possible. The idea is the same as preventing illness in people -- don't allow things to stress his immune system. I should also mention that this list contains many kitties who have lived with FeLV for years. Make sure that your vet is up to speed on both these diseases and will work with you to find the best treatment for Ben. If he doesn't you should phone around for one who has done the research. We had an FeLV cat, Patches, who came to us as a stray, turning up at our door and demanding to be let in at 3 in the morning. He was such a sweet guy, but he was already getting lymph node involvement when we found him, and he left us after 7 weeks, not even long enough for us to get to know him (but long enough for us to get to love him). So I'm one of the many here who know what you went through with your other baby. It doesn't have to go that way. You'll get lots of support here and lots of great advice. Welcome.
