Some random ideas that have worked for me. Keep trying with the food,
especially fried chicken. Spray Feliway on yourself especially the legs of
your pants and hands (where the kitten will smell). Depending
on age try to grab him by the scruff of his neck (like a mother cat).
This worked with Copper. He stayed perfectly still until I deposited him in
a carrier. However, yu need to be careful not to release the kitten if it
struggles because catching it a second time will be
difficult. Put a carrier near the food or with the food in it.
This, coupled with Copper in a carrier beside the empty carrier worked with
Thomas two weeks later. Beg or borrow a live trap but don't leave it
unwatched. Cover it lightly with fabric to make it cave-like and spray it
with Feliway. This has worked with numerous kittens/cats who were
transported as soon as possible to a vet for attention and neutering.

Go to the Alley Cat Advocates site and to feral cat rescue sites for other
ideas.

Yes, the little dude may be positive which makes him even more in need of
your love. However, he may well not be. Neither Copper or Thomas is FeLV+
and they have grown to be very big, healthy cats thanks to their regular
vets and their holistic vet.

In any case, one of your first stops should be the vets' office.
Forget about vacinations until the kitten is settled. He will be under
enough stress. My guys didn't start theirs until I was very sure they were
healthy and accostomed to peoplebetween 4 and 5 months old. I have vets
who are very understanding and are respectful of my wishes even if they may
not agree. We disguss issues and arrive at decissions that (we all hope)
are in the best interest of my four- legged friends.

Good luck. You are about to go on one of the most interesting and rewarding
journeys of your life.

Re: [Felvtalk] Question about a new kitty

2009-06-18 Thread Diane Rosenfeldt
Debbie is right, taming down a cat is work, but it's so very rewarding!
The feral_cats yahoogroup is a fount of information, be sure to study the
Files on trapping and taming. Things you'll learn there that you might not
know include that cats actually like small spaces so a cage is best for
taming; that there is a specific etiquette for approaching and making eye
contact with a feral cat; and that warm Kentucky Fried Chicken (bones
removed) is like kitty heroin -- it's the aroma of those secret herbs and
spices.

Our feral, (Wini)Fred, came to us from a trailer park where she had been
born in the spring, then dumped, then spent the summer foraging. We kept
her in a room, which in retrospect was probably too much space for her. We
had to keep prying her out of the innards of a big 50s wood-framed
upholstered chair we had in that room. We'd go in for an hour or two every
night and read the 100 Best Science Fiction Short Stories to her, and later
we just went in and watched DVDs with her. It was so much fun when she
decided we were okay to walk over and on, and after months of shying away,
the day when she realized she REALLY REALLY liked to be petted was a high
point of our lives. Now every night as we sit on our couches she flops
against our necks demanding skritches. It's been 4 years and she still
doesn't like getting picked up and she hides when strangers come, but she's
a perfect love bug with us. She's a quirky little thing -- there's a thing
she does with her tail that we swear she learned from the birds and
squirrels!

Re: [Felvtalk] Question about a new kitty

2009-06-18 Thread Chris
I'm certainly no expert in socializing ferals but sometimes that term is
used too freely--not all strays are totally feral. If he's letting you see
him and at least coming close, he is not completely feral but probably not
too socialized.

One idea I sort of stumbled onto out of necessity for my Romeo (who was much
older) was to put him in a big wire crate on top of some boxes in my
bedroom. I covered over two sides so he could see out the front and out of
one side. The crate was big enough to put a small litter box and his food
dishes and still have room for him to lie down on a towel I put in. I
worked at home and my computer was in my bedroom so he spent the first few
days lying in the litter box following me with his eyes as I walked around.
Then after a few days, I left the crate door open and realized that when I
wasn't around, he had started exploring but always jumped back to his "safe"
place when he heard anyone coming. Then I started putting his food dish on
the floor right next to the crate and he would jump down to eat and then
jump back up. About a week later, I moved his litter box to the bathroom
about 10' from the crate and he started going there, again very carefully.
We went like that for a couple of weeks and he'd jump back in when I ran the
vacumn cleaner, when the TV or radio was too loud, etc--but during all that
time, he kept watching everything and figured out what was safe.

About 3 weeks after I got him, I happened to look over the top of my monitor
one day and noticed he had jumped on my bed! He was real scared and kept
walking carefully trying to figure out what the heck this was. He jumped
off when he saw me looking but jumped back up 10 minutes later. This time,
he figured out this wasn't a bad place to sleep and I knew we were going to
be fine when he curled up and went to sleep in the middle of the bed.

I kept the crate up for another month or so just to give him his safe place
but he jumped in less and less and when I finally moved it out, he never
looked back!

Hi Folks:

You all were such a big help to me last summer when we rescued a little cat
who was diagnosed with feline leukemia. Sadly, we lost little Smokey but?my
husband?is now in the process of trying to tame and catch?a wild little
kitten that is on?his job. He's?eating the?food he gives him?but he will not
let him touch him. Any suggestions? Also, what is the chance that an
abandoned kitten has feline leukemia? Does it help to catch the decease
early?

Thank you for your help,
Kathryn
