Oh, and someone should mention, if you see it hanging out his butt, DO NOT
PULL IT, you can pull his intestines out if you do! If he passes half of it, and
it causes a poo hanging incident, CAREFULLY use scissors to trim it off as close
to his anus as you can.

Dental floss is the most dangerous substance in your house as far as cats
go (pennys are a very close second). If you opt to put off surgery, I highly
recommend at least doing side view x-rays to be sure his guts aren't twisting
while you wait.

Hey Elizabeth,

I am so sorry little Shakiti ate the dental floss.
That is one of my fears with my babies. Is the vet
going to be there with him tonight, or will there be a
tech there? If not, you can watch him just as well,
if not better, from home overnight, and it might be
better for him/his stress level. You can keep him
sequestered and watch to see if he passes the floss.
What did the vet say about what the maximum time it
would take to pass something from the intestines? Did
he say it could be fatal if they don't do surgery in
the morning, or would it be possible to wait just a
little longer? Don't be so hard on yourself
Elizabeth; you didn't do anything on purpose to hurt
him! Try to keep your head clear so you can make good
decisions. And pray!!! I'll be praying for him too!

:)

Elizabeth,
You must be so frightened of the possibilities.  You're on top of it
and doing everything in your power to safeguard your Shakiti.  Someone
on the list suggested, I think it was Phaewryn, that you should always
flush dental floss.  Before that, I was tossing it in the trash as
well.  Since I have "house ferals" of my own, I understand completely
your reluctance to keep him at the vet's.  Could you be home to monitor
him?  If so, could you set him up in the bathroom so you could check
his eliminations and look for the dental floss yourself?  Does your vet
have someone monitoring the animals 24/7, and if so, could you be told
what danger signs to look for and then run him to the vet at a moment's
notice if it became necessary?  Just how big was this piece of floss?
I'm praying hard that this is just a tremendous scare and Shakiti will
come through it unscathed.  I know that you feel like the "worst mom in
the world", but anyone less caring would not be sweating bullets over
the possibilities  Hell, the worst mom in the world wouldn't even be
aware of the possibilities!.
Hugs to you,
Nina

of dental floss this morning before I could get it away from him.  He

himself.  I took him to the vet's this morning and they gave him an
emetic but no floss from either end so far.

The poor boy is scared to death and he probably feels pretty

just drools on my arm and falls asleep with his motor running.  I am
worried sick about him especially since the vet says they want to keep
him overnight and if we don't recover the floss they want to do surgery
in the morning.  I'm reluctant because it can take more than one day
for something like this to pass - but on the other hand it could get
all wound up in his intestines and cut his insides.

Any advice?  He is very healthy otherwise...2 years old and

Thanks for the linkand I will flush it from now on.  Shakiti is at the vet's now and they are watching him - I had to come in to work for a presentation but I am supposed to call the vet at 3 to see where we stand.  So far he isn't showing any symptoms but I took him in within 30 minutes of the incident.

I hope he is OK, not sure how long it would take for that to go all the way through. Keep a close eye on him and if he looks the least bit uncomfrotable or just not right take him in. I am so sorry very you lost your baby.

Thank you for sharing this with me - I'd rather be scared knowing the truth than comfortable in my ignorance.  I won't underestimate the seriousness of this.

I don't mean to scare you, but I had a dog who ate a towel and got
strings wrapped around his intestines and they did surgery and were
unable to save him. This is my only experience with this. We didn't
know he had eaten the towel and noticed him losing weight. Took him
to the vet several times, and it took them quite a while to figure out
what was wrong. They attempted surgery but his intestines were too
damaged for him to survive.

It seems you are lucky that you caught it early and know what is
happening. If you trust your vet, I would follow his advice. And he
could pass it before tomorrow. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
