Oh, thank you for the explanation..Yes, I was confused how to use the
mailing list system. I will not re-post the message as you suggested and
thanks for the reply.

You and you associates seem to misunderstand how the mailing list
works, and you seem to be ignoring the multiple "rejected" messages
from the mailing list moderator. This has become a headache.

Please be aware of the following:

You are not subscribed to the mailing list. There is nothing wrong with
that, but you must understand that you will not receive direct email
replies unless the person replying adds your email address to CC like I
did in this message. Because you are unsubscribed your messages will be
delayed because they must be manually approved.

You can view messages in the mailing list by looking at the archives
[1]. You can reply to a message in the mailing list by clicking the
email address link at the top of the message; it is the very first
link. This link contains email info that will keep it within the
"thread" as opposed to an orphaned message.

Your topic is already on the mailing list [2]. It is discouraged to
repeatedly send the same message multiple times.

You already received several replies [3][4], but it seems to me that
you are unaware of this although you have been told several times.

You or your associate previously sent the same message to multiple
mailing lists. This is not allowed.

Re: [FFmpeg-user] encoding video from png diffs

2016-09-02 Thread Joshua Grauman
Yes, I know I don't *need* an alpha channel. But without one, you have to
apply the same transparency to the whole frame, or use a green screen of
some sort, both of which have negative affects...

Josh

I have another different, but related question. What format would you

suggest for storing my screencast in? The resulting video is going to be
1080p30 and it needs to have an alpha channel (the input png's will use the
alpha channel). The screencast is going to be overlaid at a later time
(with ffmpeg) onto another 1080p30 avchd video from my canon camera.

In order to overlay one video on top of another you don't need anything
related to an alpha channel.

I've been looking for a way to screencast an app with alpha, but I haven't

Which screencast technology allows to record an alpha channel?
mpng should be best for screencasts, some people like utvideo.

Well, the size reduction is obviously due to the smaller image
dimensions and not because the codec is so much better. I can get to
that bitrate with plain "old" x264 at 480p and not notice any artefacts. ...

It should not be necessary (would be a bug if so) to
specify the "_pipe" formats:
$ ffmpeg -i - out.mp4

Well, the size reduction is obviously due to the smaller image
dimensions and not because the codec is so much better. I can get to
that bitrate with plain "old" x264 at 480p and not notice any artefacts.

-qmax is the wrong setting here. It does not allow for the same
quality. It simply *caps* the allowed maximum quantizer. And only
because the quantizer is higher does not mean the quality is lower. It
might just as well mean there was less information, hence the higher
quantizer.
IMHO, the proper test would set an equal CRF for all the transcodings
and leave all other settings alone, or at least the ones that tie the
hands of the codec like -qmax does. It constrains what the encoder is
allowed to do:
"x265: this image only deserves a q of 30
qmax: Overruled! q will be reduced to qmax of 20."

 > It shows that using super-sampling at "-qmax 20" needs about as much
 > space as a lanczos filter at "-qmax 24" (the higher the -qmax the
 > lower the quality).

That is the wrong assumption, as I said above. In CRF mode that might
just as well mean, the image can be compressed with a higher quantizer
at no perceivable quality loss.
Also, your comparisons are flawed, if you compare different bitrate
files and base your judgement on the bitrate alone. There are really
only two valid comparisons. One, you make the files the same bitrate by
tuning -crf, which can be very tedious to achieve, and then compare the
perceptual quality. Two, do it the other way around, make the files the
same perceptual quality and then compare bitrate. Option two will be
very very hard to achieve.

You are not saying that a linear interpolation provides better quality
than the other two, are you? Plus, you keep mixing up transcoding and
scaling. Of course, smaller image dimensions will reduce the bitrate.
Duh!

 > If you keep this in mind then you can safely transcode and downscale
 > old H.264 videos into H.265.

That is downright dangerous advice, sorry. Of course, no puppies will
die but there is nothing one can "safely" do when transcoding from one
lossy codec to another. There will be quality loss, period. The general
advice is, don't do it. For exceptions have a look at Nicolas George's
reply.

Indeed.

That seems to be a regression. Not only can other tools open the image,
even an age-old version of ffmpeg I have can read it properly.

Would you please consider opening a trac ticket, and adding the file as
an attachment there? I'm sure it will get quick attention.

This is a sign that your shell is launching two commands in the
background. You need to protect the '&'s from your shell by quoting
them, e.g.

$ ffmpeg -i out.webm -f format
"tls://127.0.0.1:8554?listen&cert=test.crt&key=test.key"

> tls://127.0.0.1:8554: Protocol not found

That means exactly that (as you already noticed in your follow-up):
Your ffplay is compiled without tls support. Check
$ ffplay -protocols

All along, I was going to suggest: Why not use an existing codec? These
can have various advantages, such as they have already been analyzed
and optimized for performance, they can go into containers, they may
have safety measures such as I-frames (picture recovery mid-stream),
and so on. There are dozens of lossless codecs, and as many comparisons
out there. Some of them do support alpha, probably with ffmpeg as well.
You can check with:
$ ffmpeg -h encoder=ffvhuff
for the "Supported pixel formats:" output.

You will probably even find articles about saving screencasts
losslessly, and which codec to choose. But you can also experiment for
yourself.

> > Plus, this allows me to save the alpha channel from my program that

I don't understand your specific requirements, but ffmpeg can also
screencast:
https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Capture/Desktop
(If your alpha channel reflects the opacity of your windows, I presume
ffmpeg can't do that. But what do I know.)
