Re: [FFmpeg-user] Re-encoding mkv files from makemkv
Pehache, Thank you for this simple explanation/reminder: > Reminder : by default ffmpeg keeps only 1 video track and 1 audio > track (so here you are implicitely dropping the second audio track and > the subtitle track). "-map 0" means that you keep all the tracks > present in the input file. "-map 0:0 -map 0:2 -map 0:3" means that you > want to kepp the video track, the second audio track, and the subtitle > track. When digging through the archives for guidance this kind of advice, however simple it may seem, is gold. ___ ffmpeg-user mailing list ffmpeg-user@ffmpeg.org https://ffmpeg.org/mailman/listinfo/ffmpeg-user To unsubscribe, visit link above, or email ffmpeg-user-requ...@ffmpeg.org with subject "unsubscribe".

That is an awfully old build of ffmpeg. I would upgrade before fiddling much. I have experienced problems with old builds of ffmpeg and transcoding mkv files. From memory: the ffmpeg process would eat up all available memory on the server and then crash. Sometimes, the error message would be like the one you reported, sometimes the out-of-memory daemon would kill it. IIRC, upgrading to a newer build of ffmpeg fixed the problem for me. Everything I've read says that h.265 is mainly useful at higher resolution and it definitely uses more CPU for the compression so I'm sticking with h.264. ___ ffmpeg-user mailing list ffmpeg-user@ffmpeg.org https://ffmpeg.org/mailman/listinfo/ffmpeg-user To unsubscribe, visit link above, or email ffmpeg-user-requ...@ffmpeg.org with subject "unsubscribe".

You’re specifying libx264, but keeping .mkv as container. Is that what you want? I ran this and it seemed to work, but I also have a later version of ffmpeg, perhaps (“.mp4" specified for output): ffmpeg -y -i Twin_Peaks-_A_Limited_Event_Series_-_Disc_2_t01.mkv -c:a copy -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 20 Twin_Peaks-_A_Limited_Event_Series_-_Disc_2_t01_RECODE.mp4 To change the output bit rate, I added "-b:v 2000k” (which does affect quality, of course): ffmpeg -y -i Twin_Peaks-_A_Limited_Event_Series_-_Disc_2_t01.mkv -c:a copy -c:v libx264 -b:v 2000k -preset slow -crf 20 Twin_Peaks-_A_Limited_Event_Series_-_Disc_2_t01_RECODE.mp4 L.
