[filmscanners] RE: VueScan 7.3.10 Available

2002-01-01 Thread

Any chance you actually have the 2 versions on your machine now, in
different places. Do a Find | Files for vuescan.exe and see if you get two
showing up.

[filmscanners] Editing application

PSP is the common name for Paint Shop Pro, not Photoshop, a competitor. It
confuses the issue to call Photoshop by Paint Shop Pro's name. I use PSP
7, have found it to be just right for me, and it is a fraction of the cost
of Photoshop. PSP's publisher, JASC software, sells it for $99 online at
, although I see it in the retail stores frequently
with a $30 or so rebate from that price. I would say it is targeted more
at photographers than Photoshop, although it approaches the capabilities of
Photoshop, and has lots of graphics tools. However, the learning curve
isn't as steep as Photoshop's.

Someone also said Paint Shop Pro doesn't support color management, which is
dead wrong. PSP has full support for color management. In addition to
being able to install color management for any defined monitor, one can
make the image on the monitor appear to emulate the printer in use, or both
the monitor and printer emulate the color output of any third device. This
is all done with standard Windows ICM files.

I haven't used Photoshop Elements, but I have used all the other "mini"
Photoshops and have them to be quite crippled, compared to PSP 7, and
certainly compared to their parent, the full version of Photoshop.

You should clear your browser's cache and try again - 7.3.10 showed up fine
for me.

Th version I downloaded comes up identified as 7.3.9 on the top bar, even
though the link on the Web indicates 7.3.10. Is this a programming
oversight by Ed, or did I pooch the download?

[filmscanners] Re: Interesting result of RGB separation (was: Warning and hugedisappointment...)

2002-01-01 Thread Arthur Entlich

Hi Ralf,

Your scanner is suffering from the same problem I have encountered now
with two Minolta Dimage Dual II, and I will shortly be seeking out #3
from Minolta Canada.

It is either dirt on one or more of the R G or B CCD stripes, or more
likely a bad sensors or more than one on the CCD itself. It is unlikely
to be the calibration strip since that would probably cause the defect
to show up in all three colors in the same place.

It could be calibration defects in the firmware causing some CCDs not to
respond properly, but more likely lazy CCD sensors.

I'll discuss this with you more in private mail, but I wanted to reply
publicly for anyone following this thread.

Since Ed Hamrick has mentioned that both the Elite and Dual II are made
by Avision, and have the same basic commands, it seems they are probably
very similar models, and I am beginning to think in spite of this
scanner being relatively good when the units are not defective, that the
rate of defects is so high that it cannot easily be recommended.

[filmscanners] Re: Elite II problems

Ralf Schmode wrote:

You could try locking the exposure, putting some opaque card in the
slide holder, doing a scan and making exactly the same gamma
adjustments. If it shows exactly the same problems (and I'm sure it
will) it cannot be to do with any foreign matter in the light path.

As far as the individual lines are concerned, my view is that this is a
blackpoint calibration issue, especially as it only affects the deeps
shadows. If you select the offending row in Photoshop and use
Select/Color Range to select just the shadows, adjusting the black point
and gamma makes it identical to the other rows nearby.

I'm sure I recall reading that there are keystrokes for the Dual II that
can be used within the Minolta software to force the unit to recalibrate
itself. If there is a similar function in the Elite II software, it might be
worth trying that.

Was this scan done in 16bit mode? It might also be worth doing a raw
16bit scan and seeing how it looks using Vuescan. It's a pity that
Vuescan doesn't support the Elite II yet as Vuescan's own calibration
process might show different results.

Interestingly, my Elite suffered from similar issues as your Elite II, but
not as badly - there were only a couple of tracks in the green channel
and no banding in the red channel. You may just have a rogue unit.

Presumably, no Scan Multi Pro users are seeing any similar problems -
everything I've read about it so far has been very good. (Similarly the
older Multi models seemed fine in this respect.) This would seem to
suggest that there is something very different in the design, component
selection or manufacturing process for the Dual II/Elite II and for the
Multi Pro. Any comments from Multi Pro users on CCD issues or
dynamic range?

I await the arrival of my Elite II with considerable interest!

[filmscanners] Vuescan 7.3.10 default folder: slashes reversed

2002-01-01 Thread S Schwartz

I scanned a slide with VueScan and found it deposited in the C:\Vuescan
folder on my Win2K system rather than in my default folder.

I went back through my setup and picked the default folder I wished to use
and yet on rescanning, the image again was deposited in the \VueScan folder.

I noticed that when I picked my default folder by clicking on the directory
tree in the Browse for folder dialog box, the folder name that was placed in
the
default folder input box was:

C:/Graphics/SlideScans/New Scans

Notice that the slashes are forward rather than backward.

When I manually replaced the forward slashes with backward slashes, the file
got saved in the desired folder.

[filmscanners] Re: Minolta vs Nikon MF Question

2002-01-01 Thread Bill Fernandez

Tom--

I have a Nikon LS4000ED which I believe has technology equivalent to
the 8000. I've been scanning Kodachromes almost exclusively. I get
good color by scanning with Nikon color management off, then applying
a custom ICC profile to the scan. I often find myself using the
individual analog gain controls to adjust the gain on the separate R,
G and B channels to capture the maximum amount of data in each
channel. These strategies are (hopefully) giving me the best
possible tonal gradation and color rendition. It's not clear yet how
to maximize shadow detail. In some experiments multiscanning has
made a noticeable improvement, and in other cases bumping up the
analog gain at the expense of blowing out the highlights seems to
make a difference, but it's not clear yet whether I'm getting more
usable detail or only more shadow noise. I have no experience with
the Minolta for comparison.

[filmscanners] Re: OTish : thumbnail CD cover creators?

2002-01-01 Thread Ned Nurk

What I was really after was a thumbnail programme that can use proper cut cd
stationary eg - for the back cover. Though I realised in the end that I
could only fit 6-9 raw scans onto a cd so just used the photoshop contact
sheet to create a front cover and trimmed the A5 paper to 12x12cm

thanks for all the advice. got me thinking though - would be nice for a
piece of code to take a folder full of images and burn them onto multiple
cds (not splitting files over discs or using archives), and auto generate
the thumbnails to use cd cover stationary...

maybe if I could ever learn to love coding again I might have a bash, lol

cheers

I've beaten Ed to the draw before.
