Is the max scan size of the transparency adapter sufficient for 35mm contacts using 6 rows of 6 frames PrintFile sleeves? Overall, how's the hardware, how's the software? Likes, dislikes??? I used to have a Powerlook III. It was far better than the Epson 1640 I replaced it with, despite the Epson's higher resolution. Good detail in the shadows, very smooth scans. The downside of the Powerlook III for me was the film holders. I made my own as I found the ones that came with the scanner to be useless. The software is pretty good (better than the Epson software) but not as good as Polacolor Insight or Silverfast, both of which I use with a filmscanner. But for the purposes you mention, it's probably OK. Mine came packaged with Binuscan, which I found useful for quick stuff for the web but not much else. If you are getting something different you have a problem - most likely a screwed monitor profile. What I see in Silverfast is what I see in Photoshop, but it's so far from the original slide it's very bothersome. Oddly enough, another slide from the same roll scanned ok. The one that is difficult has a huge amount of color shift (that I like, one look at my color stuff and it's obvious) but the Epson scanner shows it just fine. Another scan on the SS120 of a more balanced image is far better. I don't really get it. I did try it with VueScan and the results are similar. filmscanners: SS120 Grain Problem
I'm having problems with grain with the Polaroid SS120. This can be seen in the sample at: http://www.spirer.com/images/grain.jpg This is from a 6x7 neg scanned at 2880, unsharpened. I get far less grain with my Epson 1640 and am wondering what is going on. The original neg is Tri-X in Rodinal, grainy, but by no means this radical. I'd like to figure this out, since I have thousands of Tri-X/Rodinal negatives, in fact, virtually everything I have shot. Some are 35mm and are even worse. With this level of grain, I find I can't print much bigger than 5x7 without really noticeable grain at reasonable distances. It is probably on the FAA website somewhere. However, with all the special legislation coming down, it also might have been revoked since 9/11... Having read the entire FAA regulations, I will point out that the regulations have ALWAYS allowed for immediate suspension of the film check provision. The right to suspend is not in any way connected to 9/11. Unfortunately, many people have assumed from a variety of paraphrased accounts of the regulations that they had an absolute right, but this is what happens when people don't bother to really understand the laws. I'm not sure what this has to do with film scanners, however... Jeff Spirer Photos: http://www.spirer.com One People: http://www.onepeople.com/

FAR 108.25 http://www.faa.gov/avr/AFS/FARS/far-108.txt Note that (b)(3) says that rules can be suspended fairly arbitrarily, although it is couched in language that makes that a bit obscure, as it states everything in terms of certificate holders rather than the public. However, this is the way in which the entire regulation is written. It is in no way clear that the Administrator has not done this. It is difficult to find information on where the changes in security are being issued from. I'm not sure where the provision for constant random baggage checks is that now occur, either. However, my posting was still just to demonstrate that the public does not have an irrevocable right (under the law) to have film hand-checked, and that point stands. In Mexico, my extra camera batteries were taken away at screening. I was told they should have been in my checked baggage. It's not really safe to assume anything these days. Fed-X apparently no longer guarantees x-ray free travel for film, either. Jeff Spirer Photos: http://www.spirer.com One People: http://www.onepeople.com/

I was away when this was posted, but have had some problems and noticed that no-one responded. It's not quite what you state, it is only along the film carrier edges, so your 57x57 neg would become something like 57x54. I haven't measured the exact area that seems to have a problem (it is lower in contrast, I'm not sure it's a reflection however), but on one of my cameras, it isn't an issue, on another it is. It would appear to be relative to the size of the film gate. It still shouldn't happen - I would guess it is a tradeoff with how much of the negative is grabbed, although this problem doesn't exist with the 35mm carrier. Cartier-Bresson's prints were made by George Fevre, who also printed for Doisneau, Brassai and others. He was the printer at a big lab in Paris. This is well-documented, but I thought it was somewhat off-topic for the list. There are many articles about it and interviews with Fevrre. filmscanners: Still Frustrated with SilverFast
I'd like to thank people for the suggestions on my last post. However, I am still struggling after trying some of the recommendations. I did update to 5.2. I've tried it as both PS Plug-In and Twain. My configuration is Win 98/633MHz/512MB/PS5.5. My biggest problem is that it crashes the system when it loads up much of the time, especially if it has been used once already. So I have to do a reboot after each scan. My email toLaserSoft Customer Service has been unanswered in over a day, which I consider unacceptable for a professional product that really jacked up the price of the scanner. If anyone has fixed problems with crashing due to Silverfast, I'd be interested to know how to fix it. The other problem I have is with the preview window. For some reason, this continued after a complete remove and re-install operation. The preview window shrinks down to the control buttons at the left for any medium format size except 6x4.5. I trashed existing scans, I tried to pull the window (which will only go down), but when I have the size on anything but 645, it just won't do anything. The manual wasn't particularly useful since it said the preview pane can be pulled at the border. Any help is greatly appreciated. filmscanners: Silverfast Frustration
I received a SS120 earlier this week and have been plagued with minor problems that are not explained anywhere. However, the worst of these is driving me nuts, and the absence of any useful Silverfast documentation with the product has put me in the position of bothering this list with a very simple problem. I cannot get the software to show me a 6x7 prescan (or scan.) The operation bar (or whatever it's called) let's me switch to 6x7, but it will only display if I scan at 6x4.5. If I click on the frame viewer, it does show a small preview of the correct frame but if I click on it, it goes off and scans but displays nothing. I am sure there is a very simple solution to this. I tried Vuescan for a bit (with another scanner) and decided I didn't like its poor documentation and difficult user interface, so when I bought the SS120, I paid for the extra bundle. Unfortunately, it seems just as difficult. For the price they extract, there should be a useable manual and good help files. Anyway, any answer to this is welcome, since I am essentially shut down. Also, a quick SS120 question - the manual says to insert the carrier until the light starts blinking. Mine doesn't do that. I have to insert the carrier until it grabs it and then decides to suck it in. The light only blinks on eject. Is this normal?
