Is it certain that VueScan uses ASPI to talk to SCSI devices? Not everything
 does.

Yes Paul, I think VueScan does use ASPI to talk to SCSI devices.

Here's a quote from the hamrick.com web site: If you're using Windows 2000 or
Windows XP and a SCSI scanner and if VueScan doesn't find your SCSI scanner, you
may need to download and install ASPI (you don't need this for USB scanners).

This sounds like what happens when the Adaptect ASPI layer isn't installed.
It isn't built into Win2K, but does get installed automatically by, for
instance, the old Adaptec Easy CD Creator (now Roxio). I can't imagine how
installing Canon software would make this disappear, but it's possible to
find it on the Adaptec web site if you need to reinstall it.

[Nikon LS-30 scanner, Nikon Scan 3.1.2, Windows 2000]

Nikon Scan was working, but then I installed the software to
 connect a Canon
 digital camera.

Now both the TWAIN and stand alone versions of Nikon Scan produce
 the error
Nikon Scan was unable to find any active devices. Meanwhile
 VueScan has no
problems talking to the scanner, so the SCSI connection is OK.

I have uninstalled both the Canon software and Nikon Scan, then
 reinstalled
Nikon Scan, but the problem persists.

What should I do now? Any hints?
