Much like buying Nikon ED lenses and having your film processed at
Walmart, but at least you have your options, unlike buying a shootn'toss
camera and then choosing a professional's print service for 8x10's.

Possibly ... but even the best of films and exposures will not demand you
scan with more resolution than 4000ppi (altho some, but very few, can
approach 6000ppi). The printer, on the other hand, only needs to suit your
needs ... all 8x10?, ... or an occasional 11x14?? ... or do you need
billboard panels???

The most important is the scanner so that your input is of the best quality possible.
You can always visually compensate for a poor monitor. You can always work on the
image with whatever software you prefer. And if your printer is not good enough you
can send it out for printing.

Which compnent is the weakest link in choosing an image manipulation system:
Is it the Video Card, The Software, The Scanner or the Printer?
If I buy a high spec filmscanner how can I guarantee the best result at the
other end i.e. is the scanner most cuicial and thereofre anything else can
prove to be a weak link. When a new printer comes along would my scanner
then become the weak point depriving me from the chance of a perfect result?

I find in my own case that the weakest link is the scanner operator.

Yes... Definitely learn how to use your scanner, scanning software, and
color management properly, and you will be happier with your scans.

Cary speaks with wisdom. Skill and sensibility is the most important part
of the equation. "It's not the camera, it's the photographer" still
