I found that I couldn't get the SCSI card that came with my SS4000 to be
recognized by Win2K. It's an AdVanSys card and I downloaded the Win2K
updated drivers but they wouldn't install because the computer didn't see
  the card at all.

Windows 2000 doesn't come with ASPI. Download it from Adaptec:

 ftp://ftp.adaptec.digisle.net/software_pc/aspi/aspi32.exe

There is also a utility to see if you have it already:

 ftp://ftp.adaptec.digisle.net/software_pc/aspi/aspichk.exe

Is it Win2K that can not detect it or is it the BIOS of your mainboard can not?
In either case the ASPI driver is not the problem. The card needs to be known
to the OS before the ASPI layer comes to play a role.

Is your SCSI cable properly terminated if it is longer than 2 feet? Some low end
SCSI controllers may disappear as if not exist if no SCSI device is detected.
If your SCSI cable is not properly terminated then your scanner may not be seen
and so is the controller.

Try to terminate the cable if it is not already so. Try a different PCI slot.
Some BIOS have problems supporting PCI cards in certain slots.

Is it PCI or ISA? Did you try it in another slot?

Any suggestions before I purchase an Adaptec 2930 tomorrow?

The card works great in my other computer running Win98SE with both the
SS4000 and an Epson Perfection 1200S chained together.

Yes, of course I tried other slots. The card didn't show up in the device
manager.

I also tried downloading the ASPI utility from Adaptec but it wouldn't
install because I didn't have an Adaptec card on the system.

The card was not in the device manager, but the scanner was after
installing Insight but nothing I would do, short of scanning from the older
computer. would work.

I'm tired of troubleshooting back and forth between computers running
different operating systems.

If anyone has a logical suggestion that a will make a $79 purchase
unnecessary I'll evaluate it. Even if I get it working, I still need a card
for the other computer so I might as well get one that's actually Win2K ready.

Larry

BTW, it's PCI. ISA is to old for Win2K.

Hi David,

I tried but they're closed until 8:00 Monday morning. That's the trouble
with spending the weekend working on a new computer system. Fortunately I
can diagnose and solve most problems myself, and with the help of a good
forum get the rest on track.

Not true. I use an ISA GPIB card with no problem at all.

WRT your problem, does the board show up in the boot screen? If so, does it
have an IRQ allocated to it?

Larry,
The below link should take you to a Win2K/Advansys FAQ on the Polaroid web
site. Let me know if this is or is not helpful.

For others on this list www.plaroidwork.com has a service and support
section containing many FAQ's on the Sprintscan 4000.

RE: filmscanners: SCSI card not recognized by Win2K

2001-03-11 Thread Larry Berman

Thanks David,

I finally got the computer to recognize both the SCSI card and the scanner.
It only took about thirty tries. Now when I try to start Insight I get the
following error message:

PolaColor Insight
An error occurred while initializing the WindowsASPI dll. The file
wnaspi32.dll maybe old or missing.

I tried bringing the same file (wnaspi32.dll) over from my other Win98SE
computer and dropping it into the WinNT system folder but then I get the
following error message:

Software support for SCSI is available but no SCSI boards were found.
Please call Polaroid Customer Support for assistance.

In addition, VueScan does not see the scanner.

Thanks for your help,

Larry

2001-03-11 Thread Andreas Kurz

Hi Larry,
you can install an older version of Adaptec?s ASPI layer (like version
1019). The older versions don?t ask for Adaptec hardware. With an older
version of the layer on your system you can update to the new aspi.
