I'm scanning right now, and I think I understand what I was doing wrong. I
was pushing the image towards yellow and then dodging and burning instead of
the other way around. Sorry to bother everyone.

That doesn't sound much worse than the awful grey pall that descends over areas
of a Photoshop image when you try to use the burn tool.
