That's what I suspect, or that it uses some type of averaging process of 
several rows overlapped in the single row mode.

Further, I suspect the middle CCD strip is the most insulated from 
anomalies (electronic, and spill over).

Maybe the banding is caused by differences in the response
of the three CCD rows?
