 What's new in version 7.0.18

   * Changed processing to do infrared dust removal
 prior to restoring colors

I know that your algorithms are different from what ASF does with ROC and
ICE, but it looks like ASF does their ROC first, and then uses information
from ROC to improve GEM. Part of the ROC algorithm identifies what portion
of each pixel belongs to each dye layer. When the scan includes IR, this
information can be used to help separate the RGBI layers. Using this should
help isolate dust from actual image content.

Does anybody have a Nikon scanner and could they check to see if ROC+ICE
actually does better than just ICE for removal of dust? Or is this just
something that was mentioned in the patents and never implemented in the
commercial software? If fully implemented, it might allow reasonable dust
removal from Kodachrome slides.

This is basically the order VueScan does things - ICE - ROC -GEM.
The infrared dust removal gets done first, one pixel at a time without
doing any smoothing or filling of dust spots. The restore colors is done
next and then the last step of filtering the neighborhood around dust
spots (or around film grain) is done.

I found a small problem with some Scan Dual II scanners
in 7.0.17, so I fixed this and cleaned up a few other small
things from my to-do list.

You can download VueScan 7.0.18 from:

  http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html

What's new in version 7.0.18

  * Fixed problem with Minolta Scan Dual II not always
being recognized as connected to the computer

  * Changed File|Output to window to apply only to
Scan - Preview is always displayed, regardless of
this setting

  * Changed processing to do infrared dust removal
prior to restoring colors

  * Made minor improvements to help file

Is this a matter of several firmware versions for the Dual II, different
computer configurations, different software drivers, or has Minolta
started unannounced redesigns on this scanner already?
