[Finale] Parts function Finale 2007 (OS X)

2006-11-07 Thread Matthew Hindson fastmail acct

Dear list members,

I finally got around to doing parts for a piece in Finale 2007 today
using the dynamic parts feature.

There were a few bugs/annoyances and wondered if anyone else had found
the same, or if they were unique to me:

* When going to the Manage Parts box, and selecting New Part, is there
any way to have the part name automatically set to the instrument name?
It was very annoying to have to retype them in for each one.

* I had problems with using the * key in Speedy to show/hide accidentals
- sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. On one occasion if I
pressed P it put the ( ) and the accidental, but nothing without.

* I found that the Measure Tool affects more than one measure if certain
settings are applied, and even worse, affects measures that haven't even
been selected. For example:

was the initial setup. In the bars selected, the 1st selected bar was
set to be included in measure numbering, but the following ones weren't.
The time signatures are set to be hidden.

was the measure dialog box. The only thing I changed was the width.
"Include in Measure Numbering" should have been a - , not a tick. It's
worth looking out for this.

was the the result. Note that it's hidden the time signature in bar 1
of the whole piece. This is obviously a bad thing! The other thing
that happened was that all of the selected bars ended up being counted
in the numbering region, because the first one was.

* Jeez it's annoying not being able to use plugins in parts. For things
like harp pedalling or cautionary accidentals that you don't want in the
score, it is very annoying.

* I tried also extracting a part to a separate file (the 'old fashioned'
way) and the strange thing that happened there was that the last two
bars totally disappeared. Then I added to new bars at the end to
reenter the music manually - and it added the missing two bars!

* Is there any way to enter a text block (not a text expression) to
appear just in one part? I entered it off the page and dragged it in to
the part in which it was needed, but surely there must be a better way.

It's well worth checking Finale 2007 parts very closely I think.

On the positive side, I recently bought a new iMac Core 2 Duo and Finale
2007 flies on this machine, even using a dual monitor setup which
traditionally has been slow on the Mac.

[Finale] Odd Zoom Tool Trouble (MacFin2k7)

2006-11-07 Thread Rich Caldwell
Suddenly today when working on a particular file, I'm only able to
zoom using the zoom tool once before the cursor gets stuck on the
arrow allowing no more zooms. Switching out of and back to the zoom
tool 'refreshes' it, for one zoom only again. The same holds true if
I change the zoom from the menu and try to zoom again via the tool.
This happens in all three views.

Oddly, I am able to zoom using the modifier keys at any time.

It appears to be this one offending file. When I open another doc
first, the zoom tool works as it should, but as soon as this file is
opened, the tool misbehaves in any file that is opened from that
moment on (unless Finale is quit and restarted).

I looked in the console, and the following notice is spit out each
time I use any tool in Finale (which is a lot!), and in any file:

.../Applications/Finale 2007/Finale 2007.app/Contents/MacOS/Finale
2007: doClip: empty path.

Does anyone know what that means, and if it might be related?

I tried trashing and reinstalling Fin2k7, as well as removing the
prefs file, and I tested file integrity. Unfortunately, previous
versions of this file bring out the same behavior.

Thanks,
Rich C

[Finale] Which is the most solid Fin.-version of recent years? (on Windows)

2006-11-07 Thread Karl-Johan Ankarblom
Dear members!

I'm turning to you for advice!

I'm embarking on orchestrating a full-length musical for a large orchestra.

I've gotten to know Fin-07 over the past months and come to realize it's not
up for the job it in stability (Windows XP Pro) and with all the bugs
considered.

Especially the bugy treatment of enharmonics in Speedy Entry (causing
"Cautionary Accidentals"-plug to delivery unusable results...) is driving me
mad. Also the misplacing of articulations in Rhytmic Notation is disturbing
(auto note/stem side selected) for anyone doing commercial arranging. Also I'm
suffering frequent (every 2 hours at least) shutdowns of the program.

Which, in your experience, do you consider to be the most stable/solid
version of Finale of recent years (on PC)?

  Thank you!

Re: Re: [Finale] How to handle C Scores with linked parts

2006-11-07 Thread Robert Patterson

I haven't tried mirrors because the whole point is to be able to have
different beam angles in score and part. With mirrors, I believe you
only get one underlying set of beam angles. (The same is true of stem
lengths, which also are often different in a transposed part.)

What if you had the duplicate staff as a mirror instead of a copy? Wouldn't
that let you do the edits to the original staff only?

Re: [Finale] Re: single click expression tool weirdness

2006-11-07 Thread Darcy James Argue

Hey Jef,

Finale Prefs have nothing to do with it -- it's definitely an iKey
1.x bug.
