7-bit ASCII.

Works now, always has and always will.

It will be understood until the fall of civilization.

After that no one will give a squat about computer files.

It doesn't matter that converters can translate the files today.

What matters is whether the files can be reliably, completely and
accurately read ten, twenty, fifty, one-hundred years from now.

probably only through migration.

And your point is?

This is about world-wide and perpetual standards.

Implicit and certain migration, at any time, is the point.

DesignStudio 2194 has to have the ability to read and render the
document as originally intended in 2007:

From digital data found in 2194, but created in 2007.

To do this it has to rely on standards created in 2007.

Standards that are fully and completely entered into the public
domain, so that the programmers of DesignStudio 2194 can incorporate
them into their program.

I think the whole question's moot anyway: PDF is the only real
standard out there.

so were cassettes once.

(Neither of us are that stupid.

Please don't try obfuscating into the ridiculous.)

Cassettes are a physical medium.

PDFs are data, regardless of a physical medium.

The format of PDF is (to my knowledge) _completely_ published. It is
out in the wild and used and supported by numerous programmers.

From this I posit that PDF documents found two-hundred years hence
will not only be decipherable, but be replicated exactly as they were
originally intended.

Any printer who takes anything other than a PDF is just waiting for
the lawyers to swarm.

that's a bit over the top, don't you think?

No.

It's not.

PDF into a color-managed output workflow on CMYK presses can do a
very good job of matching RGB contract (signed) proofs.

Any other format is up in the air, most of them damn-bad on their policies.

Microsoft's has been all over the planet with their renditions of doc
and picts.

Advertisers sue publishers every day over color constancy and correctness.

I wouldn't take anything other than a color-managed PDF for any reason.

[Finale] Staff names

2007-09-15 Thread jarmstro
Hi,

Does anyone know if there's a way to change an abbreviated staff name for
a single system. I have a large score with SATB and for one movement, I
would like to put it on two staves rather than four. I can think of a
couple of long irritating workarounds, but I'm hoping there's an easy way.

Thanks.

[Finale] FinMac2008 - disappearing Prefs menu?

2007-09-15 Thread Darcy James Argue
When working with Finale 2008 yesterday, I noticed that the
Preferences menu item and all associated submenus (from the Finale
2008 menu) had vanished. It was still possible to invoke the Program
Options and Document Options via the keyboard shortcuts, but the
Measurement Units and Enharmonic Spelling became inaccessible. The
problem persisted until the program was quit and relaunched.

Has anyone else observed this?

Cheers,

- Darcy

[Finale] Bar lines

2007-09-15 Thread Dean M. Estabrook
I have a choral score which has Sop 1, Sop 11, etc. through Bass 1
and Bass 11. In the upper three staff groups, the bar lines appear
only on individual staves, not through both staves. In the B 1/ B11
staves, however, they do go through both staves. I went into the
Group Attributes dialog box and deselected through and opted for
Single staffs for the bar lines, but could not get it to change to
single staff bar lines. Any thoughts? Yes, I was in page view, if
that matters.

Thanks,

Dean

[Finale] Select partial measures

2007-09-15 Thread Haroldo Mauro Jr.
Hi, I'm returning to this list after being away for several years. I just
upgraded from Finale 2002 to 2008 and I'm trying to catch up with the changes.
My question is, where is the menu item Select partial measures or the
equivalent to it? I searched Select Partial Measures in the Finale 2008 Help
Index, found it and clicked on it, but that led me to a page explaining
Edit/Select Region instead.
Thanks in advance.

On Mac it's just a click=drag thing using the selection tool.

Finale 2008 works as though select partial measures is always on,
although it's much more accurate and flexible than the old select
partial measures.

To get a handle on how this all works, go to the Encyclopedia section
of the help file and drill down to Selecting music under S. You'll
see the various keyboard and mouse shortcuts for working with partial
and full measure selection.

Select Partial Measures is on all the time in 2008.

If you click on a measure, the entire measure is selected. If you
drag AROUND a part of a measure, only the part of the measure is
selected, unless you hold down the shift key, in which case the whole
measure is selected.

Read the page they sent you to. Lots of good info there to help you.
