[Finale] Procedure for setting up parts

2008-09-04 Thread Jamin Hoffman
A while back, I remember someone suggesting a fairly detailed set of steps to
follow in order to make sure that the extraction and printing of parts went as
painlessly as possible - including when to optimize. If someone can point me
in the direction of those instructions, or provide a newer version, I would
greatly appreciate it!

Thanks, also, for the suggestions about movement titles. I am doing a
four-movement full orchestra work for a friend who originally set up each
movement as a different file. I put them all together with ScoreMerger (which
did a great job, with only a little tweaking to make sure that all the files
had the same number of staves), and am now starting to work on the parts. It
seems like there are myriad little problems that can descend from one little
tweak (adjusting for a page turn can throw the optimization off, for instance),
so I'd like to find the most effective way to run in to the fewest problems! I
am using FINMAC 2008.r2 on a MacBook running OS 10.5.4.

Thanks in advance . . .

Re: [Finale] Movement titles

2008-09-04 Thread shirling & neueweise

hi jamin,

What's the best way to put in movement titles so they show up where
they are supposed to on the parts?

(on mac) set the title in the score, go to a part and cmd-drag it in
the part to exactly where you want it for the majority of the parts.
go to the score and cmd-drag it to appear properly on the score.
check all parts and drag/nudge as needed (without cmd).

then read chapters 37-5 (in 2007 i think) ff on linked parts very attentively.

Let's hope the new version of Notepad is worth the money and hassle.

oh stop being so pessimistic, you just have to look at the history of
the company that... er... um... oh goodness...

Oh, would that this were true! And it does sort of look like they're
just characters added on to the regular repeat, but I don't see the
chars in any of the Finale fonts.

Very interesting solution. Thanks.

Re: [Finale] Finale Notepad/Reader 2009

2008-09-04 Thread Christopher Smith
Yeah, I know. I've always counted on the Notepad to be able to send
files to clients who don't have Finale, and to be able to have
students get examples from me online.

I guess the reader will be able to do what I need, but sometimes a
note or two changed is all that's needed...

There is apparently a letter being sent out to registered Finale
and Notepad users outlining (basically) that Finale Notepad 2009 is
going to cost $9.95, and there will be a free Finale Reader 2009
that will open, print and playback Finale and MusicXML files.

This is a bit of a shame. Sure, US$9.95 isn't too much even if
you're a student (presumably with a credit card), but for students,
downloading a cracked version of Sibelius is free.

In an institution, where (for example) we put a copy of Finale
Notepad onto every staff computer and lab computer (and get the
staff member to register it online), this is going to be a
financial imposition.

Let's hope the new version of Notepad is worth the money and hassle.

No, there is no way to set this in doc options.

You can fake it, though, using a measure-attached expression. I
believe the wings are actual characters, though even if they aren't
you could export a graphic and then import it.

Re: [Finale] menu item Preferences... disapeared from menu

Yup, it's a confirmed bug. Prefs are still accessible using the
keyboard commands, even after the menu disappears. You have to
restart Finale to get it to reappear.

Harold,

I do remember something like this - menu items that disappeared and re-
appeared after quitting and restarting Finale, but I don't remember
what those things were - whether it was the preferences menu, or
something else. Whatever it was, it hasn't happened to me for quite a
while.

Re: [Finale] Movement titles

2008-09-04 Thread Christopher Smith
I had a method in 2008, but in 2009 I haven't worked it out yet
because the expressions have changed and I don't understand them yet.

Here it is.

Enter the movement title as a Measure Attached expression. Assign it
to the first measure, left barline, at the height you like (about an
inch for me.) Set the justification of the expression to be Centre,
and add a horizontal offset of exactly the distance you need to get
it to the centre of the page. (for me, since I have 1 inch margins on
8.5X11 paper and a .5 inch inset for my first system, I set an offset
of +3 inches.) Use a Staff List that only lets it appear on the Top
staff (works in the score AND parts this way!)

Ta dah!
