[Finale] Rehearsal measure numbers

2008-11-29 Thread Andrew Levin
Collective wisdom,

I can't seem to find an elegant way to do this:

(Mac OS 10.5.5, Finale 2009b)

I'd like to have rehearsal markings that are measure numbers, that are
enclosed, and that have the functionality of the newly-named score list (top
line of the score, all parts).

I know I can do this as an expression, but I like clicking on a measure
(with the measure tool) and having the correct measure number show up.
Here's what I go through (I'm working on a string quartet):

1. Opt-shift a measure: inserts measure numbers on all staves
(though oddly, only the top one is enclosed)
2. Select handles of the lower three numbers, then
a. Double-click handle to assign enclosure
b. Right-click to Unlink in All Parts
c. Right-click to Show/Hide Based on Region

Using expressions -- create one once, then duplicate and edit actual measure
numbers -- is much simpler. But is there an even simpler way?

(Of course, it probably took me longer to write this email than to have gone
through the entire score creating measure number rehearsal marks using
Expressions, but I'm thinking of my next project).

Thanks!

[Finale] Measure number follow-up

2008-11-29 Thread Andrew Levin
Hello, again,

In experimenting I've noticed that when I create an enclosure for a measure
number rehearsal marking, they come out looking differently when doing it as
an Expression compared with doing it with the Measure tool. Specifically, my
ellipse is more circular with the former, and more elliptical in the latter.
And this is with the same settings (see below).

The thing is, using Expressions is the simpler way of doing things, but I
like the flatter ellipse of the Measure tool method. So my question is, can
anyone else replicate this, and should this go to Make Music (and be put
*below* the very lowest feature request on their list!?!)?

Here are my settings:

Shape: ellipse
Opaque (not checked)
Line thickness: 3.5
Height: 36
Width: 36
(the other two items are zeros)
Enforce minimum width
Fixed enclosure size (not checked)

Thanks.

Andrew Levin

PS - I'm on the digest, so I'd appreciate being copied directly when replied
to.

[Finale] re: rehearsal letters

2008-11-29 Thread Cecil Rigby
well, what I just wrote was NOT what I meant At ALL!
nonsense!!

I SHOULD'VE written:

go into the measure number tool
add a new region
in BOTH "Includes measure" boxes put in the actual measure number where you
want a rehearsal letter
So if rehearsal "A" starts at measure 25, put 25 in both boxes
in the "First measure in region" box put 1 (this means letter number 1, 'A")
now choose the letter style under "Style" and proceed as you would normally

FOr rehearsal letter B you make another new region for just the single measure
where you want it to show, say, measure 55, and then put "2" in the "First
measure in region" box, thereby telling Fin you want the 2nd letter used there,
which is B.

etc

sorry for the previous post!

Re: [Finale] Rehearsal measure numbers

2008-11-29 Thread Cecil Rigby
Hi Andrew-

Well, I use Fin09, but it seems this functionality should be the same for you,
even if the dialog boxes may be a little different .

I've done what you describe with the measure tool before (had both measure
numbers and rehearsal lettering).

Simply right-click the tool and choose edit measure number region.

Set up (Add) a new region that encompasses however much of the piece you want
to cover (all is easiest: e.g. 1-998)
Then in the drop down options for style choose the lettering you want.
On the right hand side of the dx you can set the enclosure shape, and even EDIT
it, if you like.
Make sure Always show on top staff is checked

Set other options as you need (how often to appear, etc). You can always change
all that as you would the appearance or disappearance of a regular measure
number, of course.

You might also make a list of the measure numbers and letters associated with
them so if you want to make parts with multimeasure rests included you can go
back and split measures as needed so that the rehearsal letters appear.

Hope this helps-

Hi,

I'm having this exact same problem in Finale 2008 Windows.

Everything the OP says is exactly the same problem I'm having. The clef is
not movable, no handle, and I'm not seeing any options for designating it as
a mid-measure clef. I never had this problem in the past. What is going on?

Re: [Finale] Finale or Sibelius for Renaissance music

2008-11-29 Thread Andrew Moschou
If I understand you correctly, this sort of thing can be done in Sibelius
easily with custom defined noteheads, tuplets and hidden rests. An example
was put on the Sibelius chat page not long ago, but I haven't been able to
find it.

How much flexibility is required with bar lines? Sibelius scores must always
have barlines present, otherwise the line would not break, but they can be
hidden. Until recently, it has been cumbersome to manipulate the bar lengths
to have barlines (for line breaks) in appropriate places, but there are now
plug-ins to help, which do the necessary calculations and bar manipulations.

If barlines are between staves but not through staves, to have say a dotted
minim over the barline, it would need to be minim tied to a crotchet over
the barline, with tuplets, the minim becomes a dotted minim and the crotchet
rest in the next bar can be hidden. The example explains better, I'll
continue to look for it.
