RE: [Finale] merging files, and thanks!

2010-03-15 Thread dalvin boone
I did this, in Finale 2005, with a couple of Baroque transcriptions for
brass quintet which had three to five movements in a separate files. It's
been awhile, but if I remember correctly, I merged the multiple movements
into one large file by adding a measure to the end of the "first" movement,
selecting and copying the second movement and inserting it into the empty
measure at the end of the first movement - and so on. Then I used the page
layout tool to indent first systems, add space for titles, etc. If I'm
remembering this correctly, then merging a couple of movements with a small
instrumentation should be fairly simple.

That looks promising -- one could get a new PC with the latest OS X
and use this emulator to run OS X 10.3 to have access to the software
that runs on 10.3 but not later.

I wonder what the caveats are? I poked around a bit but could not

Hi David,

Well, yes, Apple have a clear financial incentive to try to, ahem, "encourage"
people to upgrade their hardware.

Also, each time a new Mac model comes out, it is usually incapable of running
*any* version of the OS that predates that hardware. For instance, I haven't
looked into it, but if history is any guide, the new iMac models released Oct.
20, 2009 most likely do not boot under any OS older than OS X 10.6.2 -- they
probably can't be booted from the OS X 10.6.0 retail DVD, and definitely cannot
run any flavor of OS X 10.5 or earlier.

I did discover PearPC, a PPC emulator that is capable of running OS X 10.3 as a
client OS ("with some caveats").

I wasn't really thinking about using a 3rd-party VM -- I was assuming
Apple would have their own emulator. Obviously, I wasn't really
thinking clearly on that.

Windows can pretty easily support VMs for earlier versions because
it's the same family of chips going back to the early 90s (when the
Pentium was introduced), and those chips always carried compatibility
modes for software compiled for earlier Intel chips, so virtualizing
a Pentium automatically gets you virtualization of 386 and 286 and

That's only because nobody is apparently virtualizing the earlier
chips. I guess there's no demand for it, and that means that
conservative upgraders like Andrew are forced to replace their
hardware and bite the bullet and get up-to-date software.

Hi Andrew-

According to this, you have the latest version ot Safari(1.3.2) that
works on 10.3.9

(Safari 2.0 requires OS 10.4.)

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17743&vid=132387
--

As far as IE for Mac, according to this, Version 5.2.3, June 16,
2003 , was the final version, so youre current with that also.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Internet_Explorer_for_Mac#Internet_Explorer_5_Macintosh_Edition

Firefox 2 requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later; 3 requires 10.4 or later.

To download previous versions:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

Previous versions

Previous versions of Firefox have public security problems. You could
be exposed to viruses, phishing, and other attacks by running old
versions.

To find a previous version:
Go to the Mozilla FTP server.
Choose the version you want.
Choose the mac/ folder
Choose your language. en-US is US English.
Choose the file that does not end in .asc. The download will then start.
Once the file is downloaded, install it.
After downgrading, if you intend to stay with that version, you will
need to turn off Software Update. It is highly recommended that you
try new versions of Firefox as they're released to see if they solve
your problem.

Is there no possibility on OS X of running an earlier version of OS X

Hi Andrew,

YouTube (and most other online video) is Flash-based. You will need to download
the latest version of Flash for your OS, which you can probably do from Adobe's
website.

(You may also need to upgrade your browser, but you will definitely need to
install Flash.)

Internet Explorer for Mac has been discontinued for years (and was a terrible
browser anyway). But I believe 5.2 was the last Mac version they made.

You should be able to upgrade to the most recent version of Safari that
supports 10.3.9 using Software Update.

Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the most recent version of Firefox that supports 10.3.9.
You can download it here:

I know you're joking around, but when I remove my mouthpiece

Patterson has suggested, I get a third sound. The inverted
mouthpiece gives the tone a harder, brighter timbre.

As a composer, I might want to take advantage of those
differences in timbre. Just another instance where a
composer should actually have physical experience (either
through doing or through listening to someone else do it)
with what he/she is asking in the score and not blindly
working off of an untested concept.

Re: [Finale] OT: blowing air through brass instruments

2010-03-15 Thread arabushka

Interestingly enough the piece for which I am considering this effect has 1
D-trumpet (or E-flat if the player prefers) and 2 fluegelhorns. We'll see if I
wind up giveng the effect to any or all of them.

[Finale] composers and new effects

2010-03-15 Thread Howey, Henry
John, I believe instrumental technique has always advanced as
composers write dumb/difficult/impossible things and players get them
to work. It's a two-way street, though. Taafe-Zwillich wrote a bass
trombone concerto that over-uses the stupid pet tricks of Charlie
Vernon;-)

Yeah, I just tried to go "Ta-ka-da, ta-ka-da" with my tongue in my
cheek ... came out sounding something like a rat going down a sewer

But you also get a different timbre, so it's a trade off and which
you prefer would depend on the sound you want.

Gee, do you get a different sound on C trumpet than you do on Bb
trumpet? How about Flügelhorn?

I've been about ready to whine about this thread, too, but I realize
that the best remedy is to start a new thread. Since you recently
confessed you don't use Finale, you might not be the best candidate,*
although that should not keep you from improving this conversation.

*Of course, I don't use Sibelius, and I spout off on that forum constantly.
