[Finale] TAN: Mac Scanner Acrobat question

2011-05-26 Thread Johannes Gebauer

To the wisdom of the list:

I have an Epson Stylus DX4250 All in one machine, which I use only as a
scanner.

It used to work just fine, but the combination of MacOS 10.6.x, Acrobat
9.x and the available scanner driver doesn't work any more (and hasn't
for over a year): When scanning black and white in Acrobat, a preview
scan works fine, but the real scan aborts after 2 seconds. The scanner
driver seems to crash.

My questions: Does anyone know of a fix? Or, alternatively, do other
scanners still work with this combination in Acrobat, or is there a
problem in Acrobat itself?

Note that scanning through Apple Preview works fine, but simply doesn't
cut it for me. I occasionally have to scan 100s of pages of music, and
Acrobat is far better. Currently I do this through Acrobat 7, which
works fine, but is not Intel optimized and painfully slow.

If it used to work with Acrobat and still works with Preview, then it seems
likely that the problem is with Acrobat. Have you tried trashing all
preferences and .plist files for Acrobat? You could also look for other
versions of the driver, from either Epson or Adobe.

Thank you Michael! I don't know why I didn't try trashing prefs myself,
having been on Macs for like decades, this should be routine trouble
shooting...

I had tried for ages with all sorts of driver versions, and I was close
to giving up on this scanner altogether, and now it works!

Well, I know why I am on this list, even though I hardly do any Finale

I really enjoyed "The Universal Mind of Bill Evans" which is interview and
demonstration. He is interviewed by his brother, who also played jazz piano,
though not to the same level. It might be a little high-level for jazz newbies,
though.

There are some fantastic Ahmad Jamal trio videos from the 60s that are on
YouTube, one tune per video. They were kind of precursors to modern pop music
videos, shot in documentary fashion.

If you are able to come across Billy Taylor's TV show from the late 50's called
"This is Jazz", it is an admirable set of broadcasts, though not restricted to
jazz piano by any means.

All these suggestions are 40 years old, though. Others may have more modern
suggestions, but I have found that mostly all you get are concert videos these
days. Which is fine, don't get me wrong! But if you want a bit of background or
explanation, you won't really get it.

As with most everything Bill did, the intellectual level and commitment to
emotional and creative integrity is indeed high in this video. But I don't
think that presents a danger to a beginning student. It's a fine introduction
to a way of thinking about and working on music that will encourage a good
start on a productive and creative artistic life.

I agree that most good jazz piano examples are going to be "old", whether on
video or recordings. I don't know of any Bill Charlap videos, but he'd be a
contemporary pianist I could recommend with enthusiasm. There are YouTube
clips of many pianists with diverse styles - from superhuman Art Tatum to the
quirky percussive Thelonious Monk (fine examples of music architecture - maybe
not so universally acceptable as demonstrations of how most would want to play
the piano). There are concert videos available of Bill Evans, some very good.
I did run into a nice (relatively recent) clip of Benny Green playing "Taking a
Chance on Love" - quite conventional, but very good - with excellent
accompaniment by bassist, Christian McBride, and drummer, Billy Drummond.

I'll continue to think about this and watch for other examples.

[Finale] OT: grace note interpretation in von Weber

2011-05-26 Thread Ryan
Hi List,

A little unsure about the proper interpretation of this grace note in a Carl
Maria von Weber tune.
Clicking the link will download a 32KB jpg: files.me.com/ryanwbeard/dsc94z

Should the grace note come before the beat? Or should it come on the beat,
making the resulting rhythm 2 sixteenths followed by an eighth?

Thanks!

Re: [Finale] OT: grace note interpretation in von Weber

2011-05-26 Thread Florence + Michael
Coming before the two note figure it should certainly be a short grace note
(see Leopold Mozart's "Violinschule" or Daniel Gottlob Türk's "Klavierschule").
In this situation, two sixteenths followed by an eighth would be an unusual
rhythm: if Weber had wanted it to sound that way, he would have written it out,
as Beethoven did in the last movement of his first piano concerto (in this
piece Beethoven uses both the written-out notation to indicate the two
sixteenths + eighth rhythm and the notation with grace note to indicate the
short snap).

The old treatises disagree if such short grace notes come on or before the beat
(C.P.E. Bach's examples show them on the beat whereas Leopold Mozart's show
them before the beat): use your own musical taste! I think that in fact it
should be so short that it would be hard to tell the difference between on and
before the beat.

work as a link, but it did when I pasted it into my browser.

What you're asking is whether they are an appoggiatura or a grace
note, and unfortunately the answer is that judging by that single
example it could be either.

In general, however, the older practice described by C.P.E. Bach and
others holds through Mozart and Haydn. It's with Beethoven that the
questions start coming up. And of course von Weber was of
Beethoven's generation (although 16 years younger, and a cousin of
Mozart's wife, as a matter of fact). My instinct would be to treat
it as an appoggiatura, on the beat, taking half the value of the main
note, and to see whether that makes musical sense. I rather suspect
that the use of a slash through the stem was probably not yet
standardized for grace notes in von Webers's time, but I don't know
for sure. And I wonder whether that slash was original, or was added
by a later engraver.

There are a lot of jazz piano dvds out there, I'll list a few of my
favorites that I think are available from Netflix as well as from
other commercial concerns. [they are listed in random order]
Ray Bryant '77 "Norman Granz Jazz in Montreux
Bill Evans: Live in '64-'75 [Sweden/France/Denmark]
The Jazz Channel Presents: Herbie Hancock--BET on Jazz
Bill Evans Trio: The Oslo Concerts [1966 and 1980] including Nardis,
Stella, Autumn Leaves
Oscar Peterson Trio: Live in '63, '64, & '65 [in Sweden, Denmark and
Finland with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen]
Keith Jarrett Standards Two Live in Tokyo [1986] with Peacock and Dejohnette
Keith Jarrett Standard One Live in Tokyo [1985]
Chick Corea "Rendezvous in New York" Acoustic Band [with Pattitucci
and Weckl] ca. 20??
Thelonious Monk: Live in '66-Norway/Sweden [qt with Charlie Rouse,
Larry Gales and Ben Riley]
Count Basie: Live in '62 [jazz icon series] --recently discovered
concert in Sweden

When I look over the above list, I find it strange that a high
majority of these outstanding performances of an American music were
not performed in America. Maybe a statement of how Americans value
this music

Re: [Finale] Jazz piano dvds (a little OT)

2011-05-26 Thread Chuck Israels
Thanks, Nice to be appreciated, but not so good to be thought a hero. The
hero and the scapegoat are two sides of the same coin! I did work and record
with George (my first jobs in New York in 1960). David Young was the tenor
player, and Alan Kiger (as far as I know, still in Muncie, IN) and Don Ellis
were the trumpet players. I have had occasion recently to work with the
drummer from that band, Joe Hunt, who is still playing beautifully.

In reference to jazz piano DVDs (let's stick to the subject), the ones with
Bill Evans that I like the best are from two BBC shows hosted by Humphrey
Littleton. They are released on some Japanese label and should be available.
For film buffs, if you watch the whole performance, you can see the British
actor, John Le Measurier, in the front row of the audience.

Thank you, Michael. I don't want to break the protocol of this list. It has
provided me with invaluable help, some amusement and even friends in the years
I have subscribed to it. But, I would like people to know some of the music I
am making now in Portland, so I will blow this horn once and then shut up. For
those of you who are curious, you can visit
. The media page has links to two videos
and several audio clips.

Done now. Apologies for the ego trip.

Re: [Finale] Jazz piano dvds

2011-05-26 Thread Michael Mathew
No problem for me because everyones experiences and advice are very useful for
all of us on the list.

I appreciate reading all the advice and helpful hints from everyone on the list.

I just picked up some useful information on Finale playback that helped me
correct a problem I've been having with accelerandos!

Thanks!

Re: [Finale] Jazz piano dvds

2011-05-26 Thread Klaus Smedegaard Bjerre
Writing on history of our own lifetime cannot avoid touching on politically
sensitive matters, but my agenda is only about history.

I am a Dane who happened to be a member of Holbæk Jazzklub until I moved out of
that little town after finishing our equivalent of the US high school.

In that club I have heard

Oscar Peterson with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen
Stuff Smith with a local trio, my classmate Lars Rørbech on piano
Earl Hines solo

And my memory could come up with more if it hadn’t a dull spot with names. I
missed out on Dexter Gordon and Zoot Zims, but at least DG lived in Denmark for
years.

The reason for all those American jazz musicians living and touring in Europe
wasn’t about negligence of their music in the US.

It was about US drug laws and for the younger players about not going to Viet
Nam.

Denmark took the opportunity in form of the Jazz Restaurant Montmartre, the
formation of a new Kenton sized 20 members strong radio big band giving work to
arrangers, conductors, and soloists, and then there were recording freaks with
(for the period) high end equipment.

Since then our drug laws have caught up and we fight the same wars as the US.

Klaus
