[Finale] Alternate time signatures
[Finale 2002] I want to have a section of a work with two time signatures (for all staves) 6/8 3/4. I do not want 6/8 + 3/4 (composite time-signature). This is a standard way of indicating a section that could be seen as being in either of the time signatures or alternating between them. How can I do this in Finale? [Finale] Note attached articulations
[Finale 2002] I would like to use the articulation tool to attach numbers to individual notes. This is fine for single digit numbers, but I cannot create articulations for 10 and above, other than by creating two articulations and dragging them into position. At the moment, the best solution I can come up with is to use the expression tool, but this does not allow me to attach the articulations to the notes so that, as spacing changes, the articulation moves with the note. Does anyone have any better solutions to offer? Regards, Michael Lawlor ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Re: Printing Bug?
My main concern was over the fact that what I see in page view is not what prints. Can those of you who are saying "update layout" manually (and from page 1) confirm that the print is different from page layout view? I thought Finale was WYSIWYG! Michael - Original Message - From: Christopher Smith You have to make sure you are on Page 1 when you update. Finale only updates from the page you are on to the end of the document (why, I don't know) so if you are on the last page when you update you will still have the problem. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Finale is set to "Automatic Update Layout". But, just in case that is not enough, I have done this manually and reprinted and it still does not print correctly, although it looks correct in print view on the screen. [Finale] Cluster Notation
[Finale 2002] I have tried a variety of ways of notating tone clusters: 1. Enter all the notes. This does not work if there are more than 12 notes in the cluster. 2. Enter top and bottom note, change shape to square, add lines - time consuming and manual positioning of lines essential since cut&paste causes everything to move relatively. 3. Create various articulations and use "copy the symbol vertically". The vertical copy does not allow the creation of a stretched, rectangular shape. I currently want to create clusters where the bottom note is specified but to have some kind of arrow at the top so that the actual notes played will be determined by the size of the players forearm. Also, I want to be able to indicate white-note, black-note and chromatic clusters (a bit like the glissando problem recently discussed). Does anyone have a method they would recommend for ease of entry and flexibility, including cutting and pasting? Re: [Finale] Black key gliss
In Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion there are a large variety of glissandi notated in different ways (in the Boosey & Hawkes miniature score). 1) Some are written out completely with gliss. marked above them. 2) Some have straight lines (not wavy) from first to last note with gliss. marked above them. Of these, some start and finish on white notes, others on black notes: none have 'black note gliss.' specifically indicated. It seems obvious to me that these correspond with white note glissandi and black note glissandi. 3) Some have the first few notes written out and straight lines continuing, with gliss. above them. Take your pick! I hope this helps. The only issue is whether it's necessary to add the text "black key gliss" or not. 2) If I wrote it out, the player's first instinct would be to finger the notes instead of playing it as a key rip. It would also imply a degree of accuracy that is not intended and is not desirable. Seriously, it's a piano gliss! We already have a perfectly good way of notating that. My only question is whether it is generally understood that glisses that start on white notes are played as white note glisses, and glisses that start on black notes are played as black note glisses. [Finale] Re: OT: recorders for the 4th Brandenburg
From: Johannes Gebauer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Finale] OT: recorders for the 4th Brandenburg To: Finale I have sort of lost touch with this discussion, but I remember that there are theories that Bach wrote the 4th Brandenburg concerto for recorder instruments not in F but in G. Can anyone here shed some light on this for me? Would such instruments have been built for a pitch of 415 Hz? Johannes -- -- Although much of the passage work is much easier on a treble recorder in G, the fact that the second recorder has to play low Fs but shares the same high passages with the first means that only recorders in F could be intended (I suppose it might be possible that the first should be in G and the second in F, but that would create problems of matching the sounds). There is certainly a problem for recorder players, since many instruments cannot play a top F# in tune. My own transitional-style recorders have no problems with these passages, although the tone quality is not as good as on a baroque-style instrument. Maybe there are aspects of construction of recorders of that time that modern makers have failed to identify, or players are using the wrong sort of instruments. [Finale] Find Parallel Motion Plug-in
[Finale 2002] I have noticed errant behaviour in the "Find parallel motion" plug-in before and just chose not to use it, but I decided to try to work out exactly what it is doing and have decided it really does not do what it is supposed to do. I had composed additional parts for some renaissance music and thought it would be very useful to use this tool, but when processing all staves, the plug-in claims to find parallel movement where it does not exist; I even removed my added parts and tried again and the plug-in found a different set of parallel perfect intervals, although clearly these were present all the time. The plug-in only seems to work when selecting two staves at a time - but these have to be adjacent to each other (or is there a way to select two separated staves in Finale 2002?) Does anyone know if it possible to get this plug-in to work properly? Regards, Michael Lawlor ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale
[Finale] Fw: Wayward Slur
I sent this three days ago but it never appeared in the digest I get, and with no responses (except one off-list from MakeMusic) I can only assume nobody has seen this. Sorry if you've seen it before. - Original Message - From: M LAWLOR To: finale@shsu.edu Sent: Friday, January 25, 2008 8:54 AM Subject: Wayward Slur I have just printed a score only to find a wayward slur in one bar (not across bars or over line ends, which I know is also problematic). This slur has suddenly decided to stretch into the stave above. I tried deleting the slur and creating a new one, with no luck, it always came back, so I resigned myself to having to send off the score as it was and hope I can find a solution for next time. Later on, I went back into the file to try some other options to correct the error only to find no problem - everything was fine. Today I am extracting parts, but again find the slur being "slurish" (poor pun) by mingling with the adjacent stave. At the moment, the offending slur does not appear to have infiltrated the part. Is it a known problem? Are there any solutions? [Finale 2002] Regards, Michael Lawlor ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

[Finale] Pick-up bar won't go away
[Finale 2002] I started setting a group of short pieces in one file. The first bar of the first movement has a pick-up bar. The next movement had a change of key signature. When I forced the clef to go after the bar-line, the key-signature insisted on staying in front of the clef, so I decided to split the work into one file per movement. The second movement does not have a pick-up bar, but still thinks it has. I have tried inserting a new, first bar (between #1 and 1) deleting the pick-up bar and I have reset the measure regions; Finale still defines the first bar as a pick-up bar. How/where do I reset the pick-up bar? Regards, Michael Lawlor ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

[Finale] Re: O.T. Violin d'amore or violin d'amore
Hi all: I have a Christoph Graupner cantata with a very high part for a 'viola d'amore.' But several friends have suggested that in fact, the solo instrument maybe a violin d'amore. I must confess, that instrument is a new one for me. Would anyone on the list know more about them? Thanks and Happy Holidays! Kim Just to throw a spanner in the works (but not to start an argument) - I was recently in a museum in Venice and saw a number of instruments labelled as "viola d'amore". Some of these were surprisingly small and had clearly undergone a variety of changes in their lifetimes, such as the number of strings. So irrespective of size, viola is the name used. Octave transposition may be the most appropriate and may have documentary evidence, but sometimes surviving instruments can tell us that is not all there is to the story. [Finale] Corruption in file
I am having a problem where, when I attempt to scroll through one particular bar (or use playback that goes through that bar) Finale falls over in a heap. I have pinned this down to a single bar being aligned on the left (in scroll view) [i.e. the bar with the number that appears in the measure number box]. I tried fixing this by entering the music of the offending bar from scratch (a few bars later), deleted the offending bar, which gets rid of the problem, but when I paste in the music from the new version, the problem comes back. Eventually I solved the problem (at least it seems to be working for the moment) by deleting the offending bar, inserting a new one and entering the music from scratch. Is anyone aware of this problem? Is there a "proper" solution? I don't want to end up entering more music only to find I have postponed the bug until later, when I shall lose even more. The only characteristic of the notation in the offending bar is the use of triplets - nothing strange or unusual. [Finale] Re: Retrograde Tools
My Question: [FINALE 2002, Windows XP] Are there any easy ways to create a retrograde (or inverted) copy of a passage? Open the Canonic Utilities plugin. Check the box that says 'Retrograde'. Click Apply. Still a problem: This is exactly what I did, but Finale gives me the message: "Do not attempt to retrograde any measures that are sources of mirrors." The measures I have attempted to retrograde or not sources of mirrors, as far as I am aware; but since Finale thinks they are, I tried using "Convert Mirrors" to get rid of this, but still could not create a retrograde.
