When I was at the NAMM show, I was lucky enough to run into Beth Sorenson, a
lead developer at MakeMusic. (Not sure what her exact title is.) One of the
things we talked about was the nature of the text block formatting. I requested
that it be made to be a little bit more like a word processor, so that we
wouldn't have to create text in another program and import it like Robert is
having to do. Improving the quality of the text tool would make Finale much
more useful for a lot of users. She and I agreed that Finale wasn't designed to
be a word processor, but since the feature is there, it should be made more
powerful. My requests were small: making hard tabs that aren't related to the
font size but rather fixed sizes; adding features such as dot leaders (in
conjunction with tabs) so that creating a table of contents is simple.
For what it's worth, she listened very intently and agreed with my points, even
writing down my ideas in her little notebook, and confirming that the changes
wouldn't be difficult to implement. Hopefully we'll see a change pretty soon!
