Yes. This appears to be a possible solution: Using the MIDI playback instrument list. Click the triangle to the left of each staff name: staff 1; staff 2, etc. and you will expose the list of layers and a couple of other parameters that can be assigned to various channels, patches, etc. Each layer is listed and as you move across to the right for each layer you will observe another arrowhead that lets you assign a new instrument/channel without changing the actual instrument that plays back.
