I do not have any other notation programmes to test out your idea so I 
have sent the offending file to someone else but it has not been 
returned yet.  I will let you know if it works.

Your solution certainly works, thanks.

However, I have now noticed a spacing problem in the same file. Spacing 
does not work, whichever choice I make (note/beat/time sig.) bars 
continue on past the end of the line.  I have managed to fix this by 
going into apply music spacing to selected parts and selecting check 
all.  Maybe the dynamic problem is indicative of some corruption in the 
file.

When that happens to me in 2012, I add additional Dynamic Expressions, 
duplicating whatever previous Dynamic was marked. sometimes several in one bar.
That has fixed playback for me.
