I didn't notice any strange spacing in my tests where I hid noteheads by
replacing the heads with a blank character, but perhaps you have different
criteria than I do. I tried hiding the note head by manually changing it (using
the Special Tool), or with Utilities>Change>Noteheads, and by creating a Staff
Style (edit Note Shapes so every scale degree is a blank character—perhaps you
only need ONE note head to be blank, though.) All yielded the same result,
which was fine to my eye, and the stems stayed aligned with stems in other
staves.
t have a couple of different tactics to suggest, though.
Resize tool, change the note head (not the NOTE) to 0%. This probably would
cause the spacing issues that you don't like, though.
It sounds like you have Slash Notation applied as well. You could enter the
rhythm in Layer 1 (it will be hidden by the Slash Notation), yet the bar will
space as if you can see the notes. Then put the cue in another layer and hide
the noteheads by any method you like.
I use regular notes at 75% reduction for the same task, but I suppose you want
the noteless stems.
