[Fink-beginners] OT: Amusement at the Worm

2004-01-27 Thread Jim Meyer
I'm probably a bad person to be amused while others are suffering, but
I'm finding it interesting to see how many list subscribers are using
mail clients which are vulnerable to this worm (aka Outlook) to read a
list for systems and software which inherently invulnerable to it (aka
Macintosh and Fink).

Me, I'm just glad to be in Digest mode.

Cheers!

[Fink-beginners] Problem installing package gimp

2004-01-27 Thread Andrew L Wendelborn

Hello!

In trying to install gimp I get the following before anything interesting
happens:

curl -f -L -O http://west.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/aa-project/aalib-1.4rc5.tar.gz
curl: (22) The requested file was not found
### execution of curl failed, exit code 22
Downloading the file "aalib-1.4rc5.tar.gz" failed.

and so on, for all mirrors.

I can install gtk+ with no problem, so wondering if there is a configuration
problem (I see that the directory "aa-project" is actually empty).

thanks

Re: [Fink-beginners] FAQ contents header

2004-01-27 Thread Alexander K. Hansen
Not really--the FAQ's structure is automatically generated via XML
style sheets. My best advice to you would be to try the "printer
friendly" FAQ

http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/faq.html

which has all of the text and can be searched via your browser's Find
function.

Re: Can we fix this? Re: [Fink-beginners] Blocked File Attachment

2004-01-27 Thread Joshua S. Freeman
well, I see your point, and, not to worry.. i've been on the net since
my first Andrew account at Carnegie Mellon in 1987!

I see and subscribed to both kinds of lists, open lists like this one
which allow anyone to ask a question and get a response and others which
require subscription or have even more restrictive rules or
moderation...

also- disclaimer... I used to work for VA-Linux (now VA Software which
owns and maintains sourceforge)...

I think we'll have more success containing the impact of this virus by
restriciting posting to subscribers than we will getting VA to 'fix'
their MTA (which i think is the thing that would have to be fixed to
remedy the situation..)

Cheers,

No, I think it is you who don't understand. A lot of times people just
have a single question, and they want to be able to ask the question and
then get direct email replies to that question without subscribing to
the list. I don't know how new you are to the idea of the internet, but
this is how fink has worked, how netbsd works, etc.

If you want people to use your software, you make it as inclusive as
possible. Then you fix your email servers to keep them from propogating
all the trash that comes from all the poorly set-up windows machines on
the internet.

At a first glance it may look funny and I may concern with you but
at a second glance not since a not so small amount of helpers here
on the list are tied to vulneerable Softwae during a couple of
hours a day when they are at work. Not everyone enjoys a Mac at
work and only because he or she has no Mac at work he or she should
not help other users here on the list if he or she could?

I mean sometimes even I can help Windows users when it is windows
only specific problem with OpenOffice.org and I use Windows only
once or twice a month since I have my own flat.

And who is allowed to install Mozilla and Mozilla Mail on his
computer at work or have it? Not that many.

Second when you read the CERT and other Warnings from Anti-Virus
Companies etc you find that this worms spreads via P2P Networks too
and guess what there are Macusers who run this kind of software.
Their commputers may not be infected but they help distributing the
virus too.

Third you won't know on how much spam adress-lists you are standing
and if only one of this spammers gets the virus on his machine...

Regards,
Eric Hoch

[Fink-beginners] digest?

2004-01-27 Thread Ari A. Lamstein
Normally "digest" means that you get all the messages for the day in one
email. But for the Fink digest I get like a half-dozen "digests" a day?
Does anyone know why this is?

Re: [Fink-beginners] Why are non-subscribers allowed to post?

2004-01-27 Thread Alexander K. Hansen
One option that people might consider is to subscribe, but turn off
receiving emails. Since the standard practice seems to be to reply to
both the list and the individual poster, this means that such a person
can post and also get help with their individual problem, while still
having the information go to the list.

I'm changing it right now. Up until now we had it so that
non-subscribers can post because many of our users wouldn't want to
sign up for a mailing list to get help with just one issue. In the
case of the fink-devel list, it would mean you have to subscribe
before you can give feedback on some fink packages. :(

But for now, this is insane, I'm going to turn off non-subscriber
posts until we can find out why sourceforge isn't virus-scanning this
crap in the first place.

Thanks!

BTW, sourceforge appears to be virus- and spam-scanning the stuff on the way
in - it's just not rejecting the viruses and spams. Instead it seems that it's
letting the viruses and spams through to the list with a diagnostic/warning
"THIS MIGHT BE SPAM" or "THIS MIGHT BE A VIRUS".

Clearly a sub-optimal solution ;)

Yes! I recently left the OpenDarwin list because of the spam-extent on
that list. It doesn't seem as an unreasonable request that people (like

First take a look in the faq

Second do what the faq tells you
Third run again a 'sudo apt-get update' and see what happens,
(Fourth if you still get an error try 'sudo
/sw/var/lib/fink/prebound/update-package-prebinding.pl -f' in the
terminal and repeat step three)
Fourth type 'sudo apt-get install gimp'. This should download gimp
and all its needed depencies as binaries. If this fail post the
error here on this list or try installing gimp from source by
typing 'fink install gimp'. Again gimp and it's depencies are shown
to you, confirm this information and wait a few hours or so -
depending on how fast your Mac is. If errors occure during build
process post them here.

HTH

[Fink-beginners] Current state of the list

2004-01-27 Thread Steffen Lund Hokland
Hi all,

It seems that an increasing ammount of spam/virae has found its way to
the list. Is there anything we can do about this?

Regards,
Steffen
