Just a bit of positive feedback; I upgraded my fontforge package to use
freetype219 and it seems to work just fine. It did require some Makefile
hacking since fontforge kept insisting on searching /usr/X11R6/lib
 first. :P

same here with kde 3.4.0 in my exp tree (at least up to kdebase)

[Fink-devel] New freetype2 packages

2005-02-28 Thread Martin Costabel
After some quick tests, I have now committed these packages for
freetype versions 2.1.4 and 2.1.9 to CVS 10.3/unstable:

freetype2, freetype2-dev, freetype2-shlibs
freetype2-hinting, freetype2-hinting-dev, freetype2-hinting-shlibs
freetype219 freetype219-shlibs
The freetype2 packages are simple updates from 2.1.3 to 2.1.4. They are
still used with
BuildDepends: freetype2-dev
Depends: freetype2-shlibs
and made known to configure scripts by pointing them to the
%p/lib/freetype2/bin/freetype-config script.
The freetype2 package is a dummy package meant for facilitating the
upgrade from earlier versions of freetype2.
The *-hinting versions are almost identical (even using the same patch
script), with the Apple-patented hinting mechanism enabled.

For the freetype219 packages, I reduced the number of splitoffs: no
more dummy. They are used with
BuildDepends: freetype219
Depends: freetype219-shlibs
and made known to configure scripts by pointing them to the
%p/lib/freetype219/bin/freetype-config script.
To further simplify things, I have not (yet?) committed the
freetype219-hinting packages, because I seem to have read that the
hinting stuff is not really useful any more in newer versions of
freetype and even somewhat buggy. If anyone has more precise
informations on this point and thinks we should also have the
freetype219-hinting packages, this is fine with me, but if we could
dump them permanently, it would simplify things.

There is a difference for the shlibs between freetype2 and freetype219:
The former have an install_name (as before) of
/sw/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib and the latter of
/sw/lib/freetype219/lib/libfreetype.6.dylib. In this way they cannot
conflict. You can install the freetype2 and the freetype219 packages at
the same time.

Cunningly, I have not changed the Maintainers, so they will get the
initial complaints, hopefully not too many :-)
