You can use ar x to unpack: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:tmp$ mkdir /tmp/foo [EMAIL PROTECTED]:tmp$ cd /tmp/foo [EMAIL PROTECTED]:foo$ ar x /var/cache/apt/archives/apt_0.6.9_i386.deb [EMAIL PROTECTED]:foo$ ls control.tar.gz data.tar.gz debian-binary At this point, you have tar files. [EMAIL PROTECTED]:foo$ tar tzf data.tar.gz | head ./ ./usr/ ./usr/bin/ ./usr/bin/apt-cache ./usr/bin/apt-cdrom ./usr/bin/apt-config ./usr/bin/apt-get ./usr/bin/apt-key ./usr/lib/ ./usr/lib/apt/ So, you can certainly unpack that into / thereby replacing it. OTOH, if dpkg-deb is broken, then you should still have, e.g., debian/tmp/ or whatever fink builds into, and you can copy that into / signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
[Fink-devel] dpkg-deb failed, exit code 10 or 11
I am forwarding a message from today's fink-users list here, in the hope that someone with better memory or better insight knows the source of this problem. This has been coming come up very regularly, I find about a dozen complaints like this in the past two months, and it should certainly be in the FAQ. It isn't, because nobody seems to know where it comes from and what to do about it (in particular, you cannot reinstall dpkg when dpkg is not working). The people complaining about it seem to have proceeded to either reinstalling Fink from scratch or disappearing from the Fink scene completely. Not a good situation. Hello all, I'm a new Fink user who attempted to pull down my first package this morning and encountered the following error message (using Fink Commander). I have been directed to this user group by the maintainer of the package I attempted to pull down, who suggested that this was a problem with the 0.18.0-1 package. I anyone able to shed any light on this for me? Thanks very much in advance. James Finding prebound objects... Writing dependencies... Martin, I posted to the fink-users list a solution which I think works (the problem appears to be a badly prebound libintl). Prebinding can be disabled by setting DYLD_FORCE_FLAT_NAMESPACE, so I asked that users with the problem reinstall the gettext package using sudo env DYLD_FORCE_FLAT_NAMESPACE=1 dpkg -i /path/to/gettext.deb. At the time nobody was able to verify that this solved the issue. An alternative solution is to run `update-package-prebinding -f` which should redo every installed packages prebinding. I don't know if this solves the problem either. The dpkg in unstable in all trees is now built with the - -force_flat_namespace flag to ld. I'll be moving that to stable and bootstrap soon, so this problem should disappear after the next binary release. If the user is still around, ask him to try update-package-prebinding -f first (it seems like the easiest solution if it works). I hope that the user is willing to experiment for us, we need to know if either of these answers work before putting it in the FAQ.
