I think you're right.  I probably still type it from way back in the day 
when it didn't automatically.  Plus, it doesn't hurt to be explicit 
about it.


Also, couldn't Doug just use 'sudo pico xxx.info' and then not have to 
change permissions on /sw?


I suppose, but then you have to type sudo everytime you want to edit the 
file.  User preference, I suppose.

How do most fink developers have their permissions configured, and do they run 
with admin privileges?  I am currently running my doug account as admin, but 
that seems a little spooky and I'd rather not (though on Windows XP you pretty 
much get used to running as admin because stuff just doesn't work or is very 
inconvenient if you don't).  

I am happy to use sudo if that’s what everyone does.
