Randal, What version of Fink are you running? Unreleased versions from CVS have a known issue with FinkCommander updating the table extremely slowly. There's a fix for this in FinkCommander CVS. Otherwise check the process tree to see if FC has any sub-processes, perhaps one is hanging. You could also run FinkCommander in gdb and get us a stack trace while it's stalled.
