Subject: [Fink-users] installing octave

In process of installing octave on os 10.2 I get an error on
pdflib-4.03.tar.gz, The url is invalid and the version 4 is no longer
available. I searched internet but could not find it.
Here is the list of messages i get. the error is actually coming from
installation of xfree86-base.

fink needs help picking an alternative to satisfy a virtual dependency.
The
candidates:

(1) system-xfree86: Placeholder package for manually installed
XFree86
(2) xfree86-base: XFree86 libraries, utilities, clients and data

You can find it on http://distfiles.opendarwin.org/.

This used to be called the master mirror and was thought to have a
regularly updated collection of all the source files for Fink. Fink used
to have code that searched this mirror, too, as one of the proposed
mirrors, and there is still a field in the fink configure file
/sw/etc/fink.conf where you can say whether this mirror is searched
first, last, or not at all.

Unfortunately, it has fallen into disrepair. It is only updated about
once a month, and the code in fink that uses it seems to have been
disactivated. I don't know why; it seemed to have been a good idea.

Re: [Fink-users] sound -- xmms issues

I am using esd currently as the output plugin. It seems that the esd

xmms works. Anyone know what's going on here? Is there a better output
plugin to use than esd because it seems like there is a bad connotation
attached to using this sound daemon.

I have been having similar issues with esd, in xmms, as well as
other applications. Even when esd does automatically start, it
sometimes seems to block, perhaps trying to obtain a lock or a socket.
One alternative is arts, but I think that is dependent on KDE.
