Do you have octave packages in your ~/octave/ directory? If yes, I could 
imagine (but I have no experience with such objects at all) that they 
were installed by octave-2 and their structure is perhaps incompatible 
with octave-3.

I had only .octave_hist, but that was not the problem.

 ... were installed by octave-2 and their structure is perhaps incompatible

That was it but in /sw/share/octave/:

[pbook] /Users/dominiq% lf /sw/share/octave/
3.0.0/  ls-R  octave_packages  packages/  site/

I moved everything but 3.0.0 and ls-R and now octave-forge is building.

The cleaning should probably be done automatically or the user should
be warned to do it (her|him)self. 

Note that the problem occured also when launching octave.
