I don't know if this helps, but XFree86.org's binary installer didn't
work for me, either (there was an issue with libXplugin). I ended up
removing all traces of my old XFree86 and installing 4.4.0 from source.

Yes, but it is still not really clear how this could happen. How does
that installation work? You download all the files and then run the
Xinstaller.sh script?
Yes. I must have followed the procedure in the 'Install' file to the
letter. The strange thing is, though, that I seem to recall I had
archived all the old X11-related files and moved them out of the way in
order to facilitate a fresh instal. In that case, it is still a mystery
how I ended up with an out-of-date Imake.rules file.

Alexander, you are answering old messages that the mailing list is
spitting out after 2 days. It was indeed the problem that Imake.rules
was missing. We had already some exchange about this.

Doug did not say whether he has xfree86 4.4.0 from Fink or from
somewhere else. It is also possible that the Apple installer is to
blame, because this file was updated by the MacOSXUpdate10.3.4.pkg.
This is the third or fourth case where I have seen this now.

I don't know what causes this, but you are not the first one who had
this problem. It seems that in some as yet not completely clear
circumstances, this file is not being installed, and then it is either
missing as it is the case for you, or an older version from a previous
X11 installation remains there, causing breakage too.
Doug, could you look if you have the following files:
/usr/X11R6/bin/ccmakedep
/usr/X11R6/bin/gccmakedep
/usr/X11R6/bin/mergelib
/usr/X11R6/bin/rstart
/usr/X11R6/bin/rstartd
/usr/X11R6/bin/startx
/usr/X11R6/bin/x11perfcomp
/usr/X11R6/bin/xmkmf
If they are missing, too, I would have a beginning of an idea what could
be behind the case of the missing Imake.rules.
