If you repeat this with /usr/bin/tar instead of /sw/bin/tar, do you get
the same result? And with /sw/bin/gzip vs /usr/bin/gzip?

Different result, I presume this means the unpacking worked:
It seems clear now that your /sw/bin/tar is rotten. I would suggest to
remove it, sudo mv /sw/bin/tar /sw/bin/tar_rotten, and then fink
rebuild tar. Maybe fink reinstall gettext for good measure (since we
don't know where the problem comes from, a little voodoo may help :-) ).

done but failed (no package description or similar diagnostic)

Maybe fink reinstall gettext for good measure

done

(since we

so then I tried again with FinkCommander and got an error message suggesting there was a problem with access to the relevant directory (paraphrasing: is it in use by another process?) So did what I am good at - voodo. Repaired permissions, rebooted and successfully updated Fink

Thank you very much. I'm a little wiser and a lot happier.
