[Fink-users] Perl 5.8 and Jag re-install

2003-01-14 Thread Ken Engel

If you've installed Perl 5.8 in /usr/local, be sure to back that up if
you re-install
10.2. Even if you select 'Archive install & preserve users, etc.', it
will still wipe out
anything you have in /usr/local. And then fink will not work with perl
5.6 -
i.e., /usr/bin/perl - if you had already recompiled the Storage.pm
module with 5.8.
Something to do with dynamic libs not being found; I'm sure the
developers will
understand.

Now, in any event, if you're going to install Perl 5.8.0 *from source*,
there's a very
bizarre conflict that isn't likely to happen often, but there's nothing
exotic about.
I.e., it could happen to anyone! And I hope to prevent at least one
other poor soul
from wasting as much time I just did!

If you have installed 'surfraw', you need to suppress, remove, just
plain get it the hell
out of the way, the '/sw/bin/xxx' executable.

Perl 5.8 will compile just fine, but when you run 'make test', one of
the tests is
lib/Shell.t. This contains a call to a non-existent program called
'xXx' - the idea
being to test standard error. But since 'xxx' exists - and HFS is
case-insensitive -
Shell.t will happily call this program which runs lynx on some silly
web site, but
output has failed to reach the terminal. And I'm sitting here thinking
it's frozen!

So there you have it. I have submitted a bug via perlbug.
Ken

2003-01-14 Thread Tim Lucas
When I try to install emacs21-xaw3d, I get this error message.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
I am using Fink 0.5.0a with OS X 10.2. I also recently switched to
Apple's X11.

[Fink-users] system-xfree86_4.2-5 does not find the right files to install

2003-01-14 Thread Tim Pritlove
Hi,

I followed the problems other people had installing Apple's X11 with
fink but I have a new kind of bug I guess.

fink checks for a couple of files, which I think belong to XDarwin
because they are indeed not included in Apple's installer archive
(looking at it with "Show Files" in Installer.app).

I had a previous XDarwin installation, that I erased before and the
error occured after installing Apple's X11. The problem persists even
after a fresh re-install of OS 10.2.3 and X11 Beta.

So what is wrong here? Yes, I upgraded to the lastest system-xfree86
package (4.2-5) via selfupdate-cvs.

Greetings

Yes, you can delete it.

Those files really do need to exist. They should be part of the Apple
SDK, but it appears there may be cases where Apple's installer didn't
install them. I've had a couple of people post problems like this even
though they say they've installed the SDK.

Only suggestion I can give is to re-install the Apple X11 SDK, you *do*
in fact need those files.

There is a popt file in fink, but I don't have it installed, and fink
didn't include it in its list of files to be installed - is something
else wrong?

symlinks (python --> python22, etc). So yes, you need them both.

I have installed Apple's X11 and have xmms 1.2.7-3 running
but I get an error message that I must check my plugins or
sound card settings or that no other conflicting apps are
using the sound card. Does anybody have a clue why I don't
get sound on xmms under Apple's X11?

N.B. I have esound 0.2.28-1 installed.

[Fink-users] Attention: CVS currently OFFLINE

Dear Fink users,

due to technical problems, SourceForge.net had to temporarily disable
anonymous CVS access. In particular, this means that "fink
selfupdate-cvs" will not work in the next few days.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but we can't do much about it right now.
More details can be found at

Re: [Fink-users] emacs21-xaw3d

2003-01-14 Thread David R. Morrison
Tim,

If you have the unstable tree enabled, you'll need to be sure that both
xaw3d and xaw3d-shlibs are installed before you compile emacs21-xaw3d.

This problem is actually fixed in some brand-new versions of those packages,
but unfortunately "fink selfupdate-cvs" will not be functioning for the
next day or so due to problems at Sourceforge (or else I would suggest
that you do that).

Re: [Fink-users] emacs21-xaw3d

2003-01-14 Thread Kow K
A cheap trick that may work:

1.	search the internet for xaw3d and xaw3d-shlibs with, say, Google
2.	download archived tarballs into /sw/src manually (or download
somewhere else and move them /sw/src with superuser priviledge)
3.	perform "fink selfupdate-cvs"

Note: the source file names match exactly what are needed.

Cheers,
Kow
