[firebird-support] Broken databases
Hello. I use firebird for my product and for some times my databases start break. I read a lot of forums about protection of my databases, but I don't understand what the reason of breaking. DataBase is broken and can't be restored from backup, but I can work with database and I can repait it(I need about 3 hours for repairing, because I need to recreate all indexes and foreign key and delete phantom records). Repaired database became droken for sometimes. I don't understab reasons for broken. Can you help me to find the solution of this problem? Maybe I must to show some log's or to turn on some logs that can help to fin solution?
[firebird-support] Confusion about perceived results when activating/deactivating forced writes
Dear firebird experts, I am confused about the way the forced writes option works on the x64 Firebird 2.5 Super-Server (installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64). Despite not being recommended for Windows platforms, a huge portion of the databases I work with at my company have always been run with forced writes = off. This was only corrected recently after our chief executive has learned how much of a bad idea that is. After changing forced writes = true, we perceived that the modified time of our database files doesn't change, even weeks later, unless the last user disconnects from the database. We were told by IBExpert trainers that this behavior is as intented, as it doesn't mean that the data isn't written to disk, but solely that the file handle hasn't been closed for that time. The described problem with the modified time is what led our administrators to believe that forced writes = off is the correct setting. What bothers me is that this kind of behavior cannot be reproduced with other programs and files. I tried writing to a file with a self-wrote program without closing the handle, and the modified time changed. We don't really know which statement is true, which is why I decided to ask for more detailed information in this mailing list. Is there any documentation explaining what happens here? Are you seeing error messages? What are they? Are you losing data? Seeing incorrect data? Have you checked the Firebird log for errors? I read a lot of forums about protection of my databases, but I don't understand what the reason of breaking. Nor do we, unless you give us some more information. What version of Firebird? What operating environment? Which Firebird architecture (classic, superserver, super classic)? What disk architecture? Are you using forced writes? DataBase is broken and can't be restored from backup, If you can create a database, but not restore it, then the problem may be with a broken constraint. The error that gbak reports would be very helpful. but I can work with database and I can repair it(I need about 3 hours for repairing, because I need to recreate all indexes and foreign key and delete phantom records). Phantom records? What exactly are you doing to repair the database and why did you choose the method of recreating all indexes and foreign key relationships? I don't understand reasons for broken. Can you help me to find the solution of this problem? Probably, with some more clues... Maybe I must to show some log's or to turn on some logs that can help to fin solution? The logs you need already exist - firebird.log and possibly the system error log. Without knowing more about your environment, I can't say where they are or what they're called. Good luck, Ann
Re: [firebird-support] Advice on storing large numbers of documents in a Firebird database
We store images as blobs in Firebird without any real problems. The only issue is that once the DB gets to a certain size it can be a pain to do a full backup/restore -steve On Thu, Nov 14, 2013 at 12:31 PM, miker...@gmail.com wrote: This is somewhat related to the Restore Data topic being discussed today. I would like to use Firebird as an archive for a large number of documents (probably about 10,000) totaling around 100Gb. Each file would be stored as a BLOB. The documents are a generally variety of Open/LibreOffice (SXW, ODT etc), Word (DOC, DOCX), Excel (XLS, XLSX), PDF and various image formats. The reason for using Firebird is to associate a small amount of meta data with each file. Generally the database would reside on a dedicated Linux server, but might also be copied to a Windows 8 desktop or laptop. At the moment my concern is more about data integrity rather than security (the information isn't very sensitive and both the server and desktop are behind a reasonably strong firewall) but any thoughts on external access are also welcome (SSH tunneling?) [firebird-support] embedded apache
I seem to remember some time ago someone worked out that it was possible to run embedded firebird on apache (i.e. on a shared unix environment). Does anyone know if this is possible and how? Regards Alan McDonald
