  You will always have this field at hand without resorting to an outer join
with another table that only has two fields ( the invoice ID and this field )
each time you need to inspect it.

    Hello! I  have a FB 2.5 database with a tabla "invoices". I need to add a
field in that table which will be null most of the times. Lefts say, that 90%

  What is your advice? To create a new table with a FK to "invoices" and save
the needed field in a separate table (only when the value is not null of
course) of just create the new field in the main "invoices" table?
  I think I read somewhere that null fields use very little space in the
database. Is that true?
  Thanks for any input!!!

I'm getting the same -901 "request synchronization error".

Steps to reproduce:

Extract somewhere FirebirdCS-2.5.6.27020-0.i686.tar.gz
"su" to be root.
Run install.sh, creates backup, ask for password.
Replace /opt/firebird/security2.fdb with symlink to reallife security2.fdb.
Get /etc/init.d/firebird from somewhere.
service firebird start

cd /opt/firebird/examples/stat
cp ../include/example.h .
/opt/firebird/bin/gpre -d employee.fdb stat2.e
export ISC_USER=sysdba
export ISC_PASSWORD=...
export ISC_DATABASE=employee.fdb
cc -lfbclient stat2.c -o stat2
./stat2
(Same for stat3.e and stat5.e)

Like I said, in FB 2.5.6 stat3 and stat5 throw error.
If I do the same with FB 2.5.5 then these examples work.

Předmět: [firebird-support] from FB 2.5.2 to 2.5.6 and C application

 Hi,
we have server with Debian 6.0 squeeze and there we have Firebird 2.5.2
(superclassic) which sometimes hangs and I don't know why.
So my idea was to install there FB 2.5.6.
I downloaded FB 2.5.6 superclassic i686 (debian is amd64 but previous firebird
seems to be i686 so I decided to continue using i686) tar.gz, extracted it and
executed install.sh.
I think I was quite successful. I didn't make backups of *.fdb files, I only
copied older security2.fdb into /opt/firebird and copied some init script from
/opet/firebird/misc into /etc/init.d
My PHP webapges work well, my Python apps work well, FlameRobin works well.
The only problem I have with some old C programs running on the same server,
precompiled via GPRE utility.
These C apps fail for example on then line (just example) EXEC SQL FETCH
cur_al...:

int i, id, status;

EXEC SQL CONNECT DB USER '...' PASSWORD '...';
EXEC SQL SET TRANSACTION READ WRITE WAIT ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED;

EXEC SQL DECLARE cur_al CURSOR FOR SELECT id_blabla, status FROM blabla;

EXEC SQL OPEN cur_al;
while(SQLCODE == 0) {
    EXEC SQL FETCH cur_al INTO :id, :status;
    if (SQLCODE == 0) { ... }
}

EXEC SQL CLOSE cur_al;

...

It throws error -901 and messages "Unsuccessful execution caused by system
error that does not preclude successful execution of subsequent statements" and
"request synchronization error".

I'm not author of these C apps and I'm not very skilled in C on linux, I only
found some Makefile so I tried run "make". But it didn't help.

What should I try? Should I look somewhere for some libraries?

The most interesting for me is that when I download and install FB 2.5.5 or
2.5.4 (I must admit that upgrading/downgrading firebird inside 2.5.x is quite
easy) then these C apps seems to work correctly. (?) Is there any explanation
for this?

Error 10054 is "Connection reset by peer", which means that the server
tried to do something with the network connection from a client, and it
was already closed. This can happen due to network problems, or the
application was terminated abruptly. However the usual main cause is
that connections aren't properly closed, either by your applications (eg
you never close connections, and they are eventually terminated by the
garbage collector), or maybe by the driver you use (eg because its
implementation of a connection close is wrong).

Assuming the normal order of columns in MON$ATTACHMENTS:
This is transaction 648583083 of attachment 84322, in state 0 (active),
it has READ_COMMITTED_VERSION isolation, wait without timeout (AFAIK),
read-only, no autocommit, with autoundo.

Maybe the associated attachment got terminated abruptly and Firebird
hasn't yet detected this and rolled back the transaction (or in this
case as it is read only: committed it). If you want to speed it up: a
restart of the Firebird server process would mark it as such IIRC.

  Just stop Firebird and unpack the archive over existing installation
overwriting
everything except configuration files and security database.

Oracle optimize query.  Firebird is very kind to programmer and has easy to

Is there an index on partners.country?  What plans are generated for each

p.country = 'Spain'; All that silliness about "select from (select from )"
probably doesn't save anything inthis case - it does when the inner select is
complicated, but not here.  Firebird won'tcarry around unneeded fields from the
partners table. What is the distribution of partners.country? Good luck, Ann

Open output set <> active query.
Once the SELECT statement has finished fetching, its state is no
longer active...it becomes "idle".

Zero is the "idle" state. It will go to "active" (1) next time the
cursor restarts.

Both of those fields will hold values only while the statement is
active. A statement that is idle is not active.

If you suspect a bug, please try to give a proper description of what
you mean by "working well" and "not working" and post it, with your
statements, to firebird-devel. Also give the build number of the
snapshot that you refer to as "Server 3.0.1", as these snapshots are
refreshed very regularly.

The core devs have been working pretty solidly on Fb3 bugs over the
past 3 months so you should be able to discover what kind of a problem
(if any) you are actually observing and whether it is fixed.

using isql or flamerobin?

Hi, yes it is possible with FlameRobin.
   - Insert a new record in the normal way (for example, right click on the
table, select "Browse data" and Grid->Insert row).
   - Now in the "Data" area of the window you will have a "[null]" in the
column containing your blob field.
   - Right click on this [null] and there will be an option "Import BLOB from
file".
   - Pick the image file you want to insert and the "[null]" will change to
"[BINARY]".
   - Commit the insert and the image should be in your database.
Note: If you want to view the image, right click on the "[BINARY]" text and
choose "Save BLOB to file..."

 Hope this helps.
Hi, by clear SQL it is also possible for smaller images using hex
notationhttp://www.firebirdsql.org/refdocs/langrefupd25-hexbinstrings.html in

There's a utility, FSQL, that behaves like ISQL and extends some of the
SQL syntax, including directly referencing files in an INSERT command:

INSERT INTO tab(id, blobfield) VALUES (1, @'c:\f.txt');

Sadly it's getting a bit old now, and it's Windows only.

If I remember correctly, you need a client library 2.1+ to get that information
popping up in MON$ATTACHMENTS
