It's working fine for me. That line is supposed to start a new fish shell
that runs 'leafpad' in the background. Fish immediately exits, but the
invoked program keeps running. Are you using some older version of Fish?

Disown seems like an implementation of nohup.

Try just using the nohup command:

nohup firefox &

(Then exit the shell)

I don't know what that is supposed to do, but on my machine, it opens
the program (in the foreground) and closes it when the terminal closes.
This is not what I wanted to have. :)

you do not need disown in fish, because fish do it automatically. Just try the 
following
fish -c 'leafpad&'
